Interconception Care and Helping Mothers Prepare for Delivery

    No full text
Healthy Start Coalition of Osceola County\u27s primary objective is to reduce infant mortality and to promote the well-being of families. One of the proposed ways to reduce infant deaths is to provide education and guidance to mothers in their third trimester through interconception education and counseling (ICC) calls. We were tasked with calling these mothers and providing information to them regarding medical resources, contraception information, a brief overviews of SIDS and shaken baby syndrome, baby spacing, and advising them of various programs available to them to aid them as they prepare to raise a child. Through this experience, we were able to learn how to communicate with members of the community and properly convey information in an easily digestible manner.https://stars.library.ucf.edu/hip-2025fall/1003/thumbnail.jp

Exploring Leadership through the Avenues of Homelessness and Hunger in our Community.

While at Second Harvest, we volunteered at the Mercy Kitchen and the donation sorting warehouse. At the Mercy kitchen we organized boxes of snacks to be sent to after school programs, and we prepared and packaged meals that were going to be sent to schools and families. We also helped around the facility by cleaning the kitchen and washing the dishes. At the donation sorting, we collected large boxes of donated food items, and we sorted them into categories. These items were then sent to the kitchen or straight to families and kids. We learned valuable servant leadership skills from the team and their leaders at Second Harvest. They led with love and excitement, always willing to go the extra mile and help wherever they could. This is a huge takeaway for us as we strive to become better servant leaders both now and in our careers after our time at UCF.https://stars.library.ucf.edu/hip-2025fall/1006/thumbnail.jp

    S.O.A.R: Stomp-powered Orbital Air Rockets

    No full text
Biannually, UCF hosts STEM Day, where K-12 students engage in interactive displays and presentations on STEM topics. The objective of our project was to use stomp rockets to enable students to apply basic physics forces in a fun, engaging way that aligns with their curriculum. We applied concepts from our Fundamentals of Technical Presentations course, such as audience analysis and tailoring, to make our presentation engaging and memorable for our different audiences. For our interactive presentation, we started with a quick lesson on drag, lift, and thrust on a rocket. Then, we guided each student group through building their own paper stomp rockets with customizable fin shapes and placements. When they finished construction, they were able to launch their rocket outside and adjust trajectories by changing the launcher’s angle, applying the lessons they recently learned. From this project, we gained a deeper understanding of the importance of volunteering in our community. As we taught students and witnessed them apply these lessons in real life, we saw the difference it made with their smiles, displays of creativity, and warm gratitude towards our project. Through our time at STEM Day, we could see how making engaging and memorable STEM lessons resonates with young audiences. Our roles as presenter volunteers made a difference in our Florida community. Overall, our service learning project taught us the importance of community engagement. Beyond simply making memories, we ignited curiosity and creativity in the minds of our future generation of students, highlighting the importance of STEM education.https://stars.library.ucf.edu/hip-2025fall/1065/thumbnail.jp

HOPE Helps Orlando: Hunger and Homelessness

    No full text
My service learning project was focused primarily on the issues of hunger and homelessness, which is a prevalent issue due to rising housing costs and economic instability from any number of situations in a variety of populations. Homelessness can affect anyone, and HOPE knows that. This is why they work tirelessly to ensure that people suffering from homelessness are able to have the support they need through their various programs. This poster highlight\u27s HOPE\u27s ability to fight homelessness in the long term and the short term. HOPE has very specific methods and strategies that it uses to combat each of its specified issues, and it fights them effectively. Additionally, HOPE is able to bring the community together through volunteer work, its various locations, creating lifelong relationships, and its various events that involve local people.https://stars.library.ucf.edu/hip-2025fall/1063/thumbnail.jp

Sir Francis Drake, Pirate or Privateer

    No full text
This project explores the early life of Sir Francis Drake and the legacy he left. I will be focusing on how he operated as both a loyal servant to Queen Elizabeth I and a controversial figure in the eyes of Spain and Ireland. Using sources, I examine how his actions were framed as patriotic service, even though they often involved looting and destruction. Some key focuses that I go into are his failed voyages; one with John Hawkins and the Portuguese, and the other focus is the raid on Nombre de Dios. I also look at his role in Ireland under the Earl of Essex, where he supported campaigns like the resistance against the Gaelic, an episode that shaped how the Irish viewed him, not as a hero but as a violent figure in the campaign. The Spanish saw Drake as a pirate and a threat. The Spanish referred to him as El Draque, which means Dragon. English propaganda, however, turned him into a national symbol. I also explored his voyages to the Northwest, the route he took to get back home from the Northwest, and his last voyage with Hawkins. I will also mention how he died on his last voyage from a deadly illness he caught when he was in San Juan. This also explores whether he should be the hero that England represented him as, or how the Spanish saw him, as a pirate.https://stars.library.ucf.edu/hip-2025fall/1040/thumbnail.jp

    Leading with Cup-Passion

7 Cups is a free online mental health service where anonymous users can receive the support they need at any time. Through conducted training, listeners are able to assist the anonymous users with day-to-day challenges or long term struggles. Listeners are there to provide these individuals with a listening hear and a way to be understood. If it is felt needed, listeners refer the individuals to a more qualified form of therapy, which is also offered within 7 Cups! Through volunteering, we have learned how to identify when someone is struggling and how to treat each situation differently to fit the needs of that individual.https://stars.library.ucf.edu/hip-2025fall/1023/thumbnail.jp
