Inter-firm marketing collaboration in family businesses: The role of risk aversion
Family businesses show low participation in inter-organizational collaborations. Inter-firm collaborations are activities in which companies seek to access resources and develop capabilities that they cannot achieve on their own. While there is empirical evidence that family businesses show a high level of risk aversion, some studies have shown the opposite. Further, research on this topic has focused mainly on economic and financial decisions, but few studies explore family business attitudes toward risk in non-financial decisions, such as marketing collaborations. Using a bivariate probit model in a sample of 1,118 Chilean family firms, we analyzed the extent to which the degree of risk aversion influences the probability of family firms participating in marketing collaborations with other firms and on the probability of cooperating with firms with which the family firm has had previous business experience. We found that although most conservative family firms are reluctant to take risks when entering a collaborative relationship, they are willing to take risks when engaging with partners with whom they have not had a previous relationship. The findings expand on research regarding family businesses’ attitudes toward risk, relative to strategic non-financial decisions, and the theoretical development of their collaborative marketing visions
Moral Reframing: A Perspective-Taking Approach to Political Arguments
Moral foundations theory posits that there are five foundations of morality from which Americans make political decisions: 1) Care/Harm, 2) Fairness/Reciprocity, 3) Ingroup/Loyalty, 4) Authority/Respect, and 5) Purity/Sanctity. Previous research finds that liberals primarily endorse foundations 1 and 2, while conservatives primarily endorse foundations 3, 4, and 5. To examine which moral values are most persuasive to liberals and conservatives, political arguments aimed at decreasing support for an issue were reframed to appeal to foundations 1 and 2, or to foundations 3, 4, and 5. Results indicate thatconservatives might be persuaded by arguments grounded in ingroup/loyalty, authority/respect, and purity/sanctity values, but might not be persuaded by arguments grounded in care/harm, or fairness/reciprocity values. Liberals might be persuaded by arguments grounded in any of the five foundations. Moderates were the only group that showed no evidence of persuasion
Literature Review Exploring Relationship Between Media Representations of Men, Masculinities, and Incels on Incel Discourse
In 2014, Elliot Rodger, a self-proclaimed incel (involuntary celibate), murdered six people and injured 14 in Isla Vista, California, as retribution for his experiences in romantic and sexual rejection. Incels generally believe women are at fault for men’s celibacy. Misogynistic gender beliefs, such as incel ideology, often develop in adolescence under the influence of social environment and media exposure. This literature review explores the formationof gender beliefs through gender socialization and masculinity performances. It also looks into how incels internalize a distorted perspective of normative masculinities and what they expect conformance to these masculinities should bring. Readers will be presented with a brief history of incels and multiple examples of incel discourse from internet forums. Discussions surround incel discourse and how it may be shaped by representations of men, masculinities, and incels in the media
BREAKING DOWN THE LANGUAGE BARRIER: USING POP CULTURE FROM ACROSS THE GLOBE TO TEACH MICROECONOMICS
Economic educators have been teaching with pop culture for decades, but the idea of using foreign-language teaching resources to create a more inclusive and diverse classroom has only recently been taken up. This paper builds on the work of Wooten et al. (2020), who have shown how K-pop can be integrated into an English-language classroom. We expand on that work by compiling a set of 11 teaching guides using material from 11 different countries that demonstrate economic concepts commonly taught in a principles of microeconomics course. Al-Bahrani (2020) has called on educators to take a deliberate approach to diversifying their lecture material. It is our hope that, with time, broadly diverse and inclusive media will be ubiquitous when students are introduced to economics
The relationship of consumer ethnocentrism, purchase intention, and lifestyle in first-generation bicultural ethnic groups
The study analyzed consumer ethnocentrism’s relationship in the first generation Colombian-Canadian bicultural ethnic consumer with purchase intention and lifestyle. One hundred and fifty-eight personal surveys were conducted in Toronto, Canada. It found that ethnocentrism positively influenced the perceptions of Canadian products compared to Colombian products. However, lifestyle was not significantly related to purchase intention. These findings motivate companies to identify their bicultural consumers who may favor products of the host country over most foreign products. It is possible that individuals who incorporate dual ethnic identities can move away from one value system and adopt another; thus, more empirical evidence on the behavior of this type of consumer must be provided, mainly when multinationals compete among one another rather than with their national rivals, with the concept of country of origin being highlighted. Consequently, organizations should know how affiliation with the host country may positively affect on purchase intentions concerning the country of origin
SUICIDE, CLIMATE, AND ECONOMY: A COUNTY-LEVEL ANALYSIS
This study analyzes the impact of income, unemployment, and climate on county level suicide rates in the United States. In order to ensure a robust measure of climate is applied, average temperature and average maximum temperature are analyzed. The data set used in the investigation includes observations from 1999 to 2018 for 2,892 counties. Our results show that increases in income lower the rate of suicide while increases in unemployment raise it. Higher mean and max temperatures are predicted to lower the rate of suicide
Instances of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) Among the Young in Turkey
The aim of this research was to find out the origin and emotional and intellectual process of violence among young people. Interpretative phenomenological analysis method was used in the research. In-depth interviews were held with young adolescents and emerging adults that have committed violence to reveal their experiences of perpetrating violence, thoughts and sensations that could lay the groundwork for emergence of violence in this age group. The study group consisted of fifteen young adolescents and emerging adults. As a result of the interpretive phenomenological analysis using MAXQDA computer program, three study themes were obtained: 1) Childhood experiences 2) Relationship with partner and occurrence of violence, 3) Post-violence experiences. According to the young adolescents and emerging adults who have committed intimate partner violence; intimate partner violence was triggered by jealousy, mistrust, uncontrolled anger, and desire to control the partner\u27s life
Multiple Intelligence in a Center Based Environment
The Theory of Multiple Intelligences (MI), originally defined by Howard Gardner (1993, 1999), continues to contribute to epistemological and pedagogical understandings and practices in the elementary classroom. The multiple intelligences manifest naturally through students’ work; center-based learning is an effective approach to authentically activating children’s innate intelligences. Centers provide an opportunity for students to explore a subject through varied experiences. The MI Theory reveals each child possesses particular intelligences and ways of understanding which supports their learning in unique ways. Consequently, traditional lessons taught in whole group settings do not satisfy individual needs. Furthermore, affording children with opportunities to determine choices in their own education, they become more motivated to engage with the material. Self-Determination Theory explains why an individual’s interest in their schoolwork increases once they are empowered to make decisions about what they learnbased on their interests. Building on Gardner’s work, this current discussion suggests the most effective way to foster all intelligences is through choice-based centers. This overview of existing research supports implementing the theories of Multiple Intelligences and Self-Determination in the classroom. Recommendations for centers and authentic assessments are also included as a guide for reforming instruction to best benefit students
Industry impact on GDP growth in developed countries under R&D investment conditions
The impact of industry on GDP growth is widely discussed in light of the industrial revolution that arose as the first wave of innovations and has since been a common subject of theoretical and empirical research papers. However, the issue of R&D investment, industrial structure and the impact on GDP growth is still under discussion and requires much deeper investigation under conditions of globalization. The results of this paper supported the hypotheses that growth of the industry share in gross value added has a higher impact on GDP growth in well-developed industrialized countries with high GDP per capita than in industrialized countries whose GDP per capita is at a lower level under business-financed R&D investment conditions. In addition, the multiplier effect of business-financed R&D investment and its impact on economic growth depend on the economic development level of a given industrialized country. The proposed hypotheses suggest that policy makers of less-developed countries should pay more attention to enhancing the quality of industry by introducing appropriate incentives rather than to increasing the share of industry in GDP, with a particular focus on the best practices of well-developed industrialized countries
