Gender Inclusion: the Practices of Organizational Development and Human Resource Management
This study explores gender inclusion via practices of organizational development and human resource management from general managers in five-star hotels based on the gap between current practices, expectations, and typical general managers' characteristics. The study states the related theories of organizational culture, corporate policies, perceived organizational support, core competencies, and gender perceptions. A mixed method was applied in three stages. Quantitative research was conducted with 400 executive staff using 25 structured questionnaires via a Likert scale: Needs Assessment. The second stage is qualitative research conducted using five in-depth interview questions with 22 interviews conducted by the general manager. Interview transcripts collected the data, contents analysis inter-coding and triangulation of themes development. The last stage is the development of a model and guidelines, which are conducted by juxtaposing quantitative and qualitative data and expert reviews. The study discusses the implications for the literature and practice
ESG performance and investment efficiency: The impact of information asymmetry
Bilyay Erdogan, Seda/0000-0001-6701-4448This paper investigates the relationship between firms' engagement in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) activities and corporate investment efficiency, using 1,094 firms from 21 countries in Europe, covering the years 2002-2019. We conduct our estimations using fixed effects panel data techniques and address potential endogeneity with instrumental variables (IV) estimations. We provide evidence that overall ESG engagement is positively and significantly associated with investment efficiency. Analyzing overinvestment and underinvestment scenarios shows that ESG engagement decreases only overinvestment problems. Within the underinvestment scenario, we observe that ESG engagement is beneficial only for firms with higher information asymmetries. Thus, information asymmetry matters in the underinvestment case. We next show that four firm-level channels-information asymmetry, financial constraints, cash flows, and risk-link ESG performance to investment inefficiency. Additional analysis shows that firms with extreme ESG scores (i.e., very low and very high) do not experience significant reductions in investment inefficiency. Altogether, our findings draw attention to the critical role of ESG performance and information asymmetry in determining corporate investment efficiency
How Do Beliefs in Free Will and Determinism Correlate With Beliefs in Conspiracy, Paranormal, and Pseudoscience Beliefs?
In this study, we tested the relationship between personal agency beliefs, represented by free will, scientific and fatalistic determinism and unpredictability, and epistemically suspect beliefs (ESBs), including conspiracy, paranormal, and pseudoscience beliefs, across two different cultures (T & uuml;rkiye and the UK). In two preregistered studies (NStudy 1 = 682, NStudy 2 = 532), we proposed and found correlational evidence for the idea that although seemingly contradictory, both forms of determinism-scientific and fatalistic-might lead individuals to feel a reduced control over their actions, prompting them towards simpler explanations offered by ESBs, thereby compensating for a diminished sense of agency. The relationship between free will, unpredictability, and ESBs varied by culture, likely influenced by the cultural interpretation of those beliefs. Our results underscore the link between personal agency and ESBs, suggesting that ESBs may act as a safeguard against eroding personal agency.Türkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Araştırma Kurumu, TÜBİTAK, (221 K046); Türkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Araştırma Kurumu, TÜBİTAKSocial Science Citation Inde
Adaptive Sampling Noise Mitigation Technique for Feedback-Based Quantum Algorithms
Wisniewski, Rafal/0000-0001-6719-8427Inspired by Lyapunov control techniques for quantum systems, feedback-based quantum algorithms have recently been proposed as alternatives to variational quantum algorithms for solving quadratic unconstrained binary optimization problems. These algorithms update the circuit parameters layer-wise through feedback from measuring the qubits in the previous layer to estimate expectations of certain observables. Therefore, the number of samples directly affects the algorithm's performance and may even cause divergence. In this work, we propose an adaptive technique to mitigate the sampling noise by adopting a switching control law in the design of the feedback-based algorithm. The proposed technique can lead to better performance and convergence properties. We show the robustness of our technique against sampling noise through an application for the maximum clique problem.Conference Proceedings Citation Index - Scienc
Affective Contours of Transfeminism: Challenging Gender in Turkey's Contemporary Alternative Theatre
The increasing visibility of transmisogyny and transphobia, alongside the transexclusionary feminist discourse, necessitates a nuanced affective analysis to understand the complex emotional landscapes within trans representations in Turkey's contemporary alternative theatre. This study, grounded in affect theory, examines the strategies employed in trans performances. Amid heightened transphobia and conservative politics, alternative theatre emerges as a crucial site for the resistance and creative expressions of marginalized voices. This research delves into the melodramatic elements prevalent in contemporary alternative theatre in Turkey, assessing how affects like melancholia, sadness, and suffering are often privileged in mainstream narratives, which leads to reinforcing stereotypes and limiting the portrayal of trans experiences. Close readings of key performances by artists like Esmeray Özadikti and Seyhan Arman highlight the diverse affective registers employed by transfeminist artists, including humor, irony, anger, and resilience, to disrupt dominant narratives. This analysis explores trans affect as not only an individual experience but also a social and cultural phenomenon shaped by broader power dynamics. Drawing on Sara Ahmed's concepts of 'affective economies' and the 'sociality of emotions,' this thesis examines how emotions circulate within Turkish alternative theatre. Supplemented by archival research, this study combines affect theory with performance studies, queer and trans studies. In this way, it aims to contribute to a cautious understanding of trans representation and advocate for a broader recognition of the affective and political complexities inherent in trans performances. This approach challenges reductive narratives and highlights the diverse emotional dimensions that constitute trans lives and experiences, ultimately enhancing the discourse around trans visibility and representation within Turkey's sociopolitical landscape
A Qualitative Study of Unveiling School Dropout Complexity in Türkiye
TUNA, BURAK/0000-0003-3330-3131This study investigates school dropout, particularly the shift to open high schools in Turkiye during the pandemic, through a multi-stakeholder lens. Using grounded theory, data was collected via semi-structured interviews with 12 students, 15 teachers, and 20 school administrators. Results reveal a model linking themes: predictive reasons for transferring to open high school, both pandemic-related and unrelated, positive/negative consequences of the transition, pandemic's impact on formal education continuity, essential open high school skills, and strategies to reduce such preferences. Findings highlight the sway of exam-focused education on open high school interest, regardless of COVID-19, and emphasize the need for equitable education amidst Turkiye's pandemic challenges. Theoretical implications may infer the necessity of approaching school dropout as a multilayered dynamic issue within the cultural context. The implications also may convey the significance of policies and systems not only to reduce the rates of school dropout but also critically unpack underlying reasons to make improvements.Hacettepe UniversityNot applicable
Evaluating the Deep Learning Software Tools for Large-Scale Enterprises Using a Novel Todiffa-Mcdm Framework
Pamucar, Dragan/0000-0001-8522-1942; Simic, Vladimir/0000-0001-5709-3744; Gligoric, Milos/0000-0002-1745-3765Deep learning (DL) is one of the most promising technological developments emerging in the fourth industrial revolution era for businesses to improve processes, increase efficiency, and reduce errors. Accordingly, hierarchical learning software selection is one of the most critical decision-making problems in integrating neural network applications into business models. However, selecting appropriate reinforcement learning software for integrating deep learning applications into enterprises' business models takes much work for decision-makers. There are several reasons for this: first, practitioners' limited knowledge and experience of DL makes it difficult for decision-makers to adapt this technology into their enterprises' business model and significantly increases complex uncertainties. Secondly, according to the authors' knowledge, no study in the literature addresses deep structured learning solutions with the help of MCDM approaches. Consequently, making inferences concerning criteria that should be considered in an evaluation process is impossible by considering the studies in the relevant literature. Considering these gaps, this study presents a novel decision-making approach developed by the authors. It involves the combination of two new decision-making approaches, MAXC (MAXimum of Criterion) and TODIFFA (the total differential of alternative), which were developed to solve current decision-making problems. When the most important advantages of this model are considered, it associates objective and subjective approaches and eliminates some critical limitations of these methodologies. Besides, it has an easily followable algorithm without the need for advanced mathematical knowledge for practitioners and provides highly stable and reliable results in solving complex decision-making problems. Another novelty of the study is that the criteria are determined with a long-term negotiation process that is part of comprehensive fieldwork with specialists. When the conclusions obtained using this model are briefly reviewed, the C2 "Data Availability and Quality" criterion is the most influential in selecting deep learning software. The C7 "Time Constraints" criterion follows the most influential factor. Remarkably, prior research has overlooked the correlation between the performance of Deep Learning (DL) platforms and the quality and accessibility of data. The findings of this study underscore the necessity for DL platform developers to devise solutions to enable DL platforms to operate effectively, notwithstanding the availability of clean, high-quality, and adequate data. Finally, the robustness check carried out to test the validity of the proposed model confirms the accuracy and robustness of the results obtained by implementing the suggested model.Science Citation Index Expande
Interdependency of Passive Design Strategies for Energy-Efficient Building Envelope
Achieving energy efficiency in buildings is quite important since it significantly contributes to the reduction of energy consumption and leads to better utilization of existing energy resources. This paper investigates and identifies a set of passive design strategies of building shape and proportion, orientation, envelope materials, glazing that helps in minimizing the energy consumption of buildings and achieves an energy-efficient building envelope. A set of 51 passive design rules for achieving energy-efficient building envelope in a hot humid climate is induced from a thorough investigation of the related literature. An interdependency matrix that represents the consequential effects and embodiment among these rules is established. The paper introduces an interdependency analysis of passive design strategies for energy-efficient building envelope leading to the identification of both the influential and interdependency levels among the induced rules. The obtained results are expected to be beneficial to building designers during the conceptual designing of buildings to better achieve energy efficiency. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024
Memory Transgressed by Female Bodies: Civil Historiography Contrasted With Official Historiography
For the past twenty-two years, productions by the Hareket Atölyesi Topluluğu (Movement Atelier Company), an all-female ensemble based in Istanbul, have related to spaces such as the country, the city, and the home. These spaces not only provide shelter but also give rise to existence and foster creation, thereby aligning with feminine characteristics and challenging hypermasculine powers. This article examines the works of Hareket Atölyesi Topluluğu using the concepts of chora, which refers to a formless interval, and of barzakh, which describes an in-between space. Ultimately, we seek to explore how these cultural conceptions of space inform artistic processes and resist hegemonic narratives. © 2024 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC
