    The role of perceived social support in mitigating the impact of parenting stress on children's effortful control

    Uzundag, Berna/0000-0003-1192-691X; YILDIZ, EZGI/0000-0001-5140-0889Effortful control, the ability to suppress a dominant response over a subdominant one, is a fundamental aspect of self-regulation. It has been observed that higher levels of parenting stress are associated with lower levels of effortful control in children. Perceived social support, an important factor in reducing parenting stress, may act as a buffer against the negative effects of parenting stress on children's effortful control skills. To investigate this assumption, we collected data from 199 mothers in Turkiye, who had children between the ages of 3 and 6 years. Mothers reported on their parenting stress levels, perceived social support, and their children's effortful control. Our results revealed that perceived social support moderated the relationship between parenting stress and children's effortful control after controlling for socioeconomic status. Moreover, the buffering effect of perceived social support became stronger as the level of social support increased, subsequently weakening the relationship between parenting stress and children's effortful control. These findings suggest that parental perceived social support plays a pivotal role in mitigating the adverse effects of parenting stress on healthy child development. These cross-sectional findings warrant a longitudinal investigation into the interrelations among parenting stress, perceived social support, and children's effortful control

    Never Mind: Social Class Differences in Children's Developing Emotion Attributions To Procedural Justice Outcomes

    Acar, Melike/0000-0003-3233-1042This study examined children's emotion attributions and moral judgements to hypothetical procedural justice outcomes when the candidates were equal in merit but different in need. Children (7 to 11 years old, N = 88) were presented with four vignettes depicting resource-rich and resource-poor candidates losing educational materials and experiences. Results demonstrated that children attributed more negative emotions when the resource-poor candidate lost resources. Older children attributed more two-sided emotions to procedural justice outcomes, mainly when the resource-poor candidates lost resources. However, emotion complexity was not always positively associated with welfare justifications, such that children considered the type of resource, needs of the candidates, and outcomes. In addition, children from low subjective social status (SSS) attributed more positive emotions and used more emotion complexity for the loser. Results are discussed concerning children's developing emotion attribution and understanding of procedural justice

    Would You Like To Travel After the Covid-19 Pandemic? a Novel Examination of the Causal Correlations Within the Attitudinal Theory of Planned Behaviour

    Purpose: This present study examines the correlation between tourist attitudes toward international travel post-Covid-19 pandemic as well as the image of the travel destination and the perceived risk. Methods: A cross-sectional method was used to collect data via self-administered questionnaires from 432 international respondents visiting Malaysia in 2023. The causal correlations were then examined using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). Results: Both the subjective norms and perceived behavioural control of TPB, and destination image significantly influence tourist attitudes, and, subsequently tourist satisfaction. This present study also lists its managerial and theoretical implications as well as its limitations and suggestions for imminent studies. Implications: This study contributes to the limited empirical research on travel post-pandemic by applying the established theory of planned behaviour (TPB). Most of the variables of the theory of planned behaviour, an attitudinal theory, correlate with travel intentions but this study takes another perspective. This study also bridges the gap by correlating the TPB to on-travel experiences by measuring tourist satisfaction. © 2024 Authors

    Critically Queer yet Politically Affirmative Engagements with Human Rights

    Considering recent queer engagements with international human rights, this article argues that emerging attempts at queering rights have often resulted in framing queer critique into the normativity of human rights. This article critiques this tendency, suggesting that queer engagement with rights can be critical yet (potentially) affirmative. It shows that queer critique, understood as non-essentialist politics, can contribute to contemporary critical human rights studies and their analyses of identity-producing functions of rights. In this way, the paper engages not only with the subject paradox of the rights discourse but also with queer responses to identity-based rights claims. I argue that queer critiques, shifting the focus from ontology to politics, encourage an affirmative engagement with framings of rights by considering identities as political claims, understanding rights not in ontological terms but as instruments for shifting temporary strategies in practice. The arena of rights, a site where debates about the definitions of human are contested, is a crucial space for deploying non-essentialist politics.     An Eco-Decolonial Narrative: Toward a Dividual Self and Slow Wit(H)nessing in Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor’s the Dragonfly Sea

    This article focuses on the Kenyan novelist Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor’s The Dragonfly Sea (2019) and examines how dividuality as an eco-decolonial move is manifested in the novel. Dividuality, as I argue, derives from an eco-decolonial approach and challenges the human-nature dualism, and at the same time extends the Western-oriented, enlightened image of a firmly insular person into a less bounded and porous presence comprised of both human and nonhuman forces. From this vantage point, this article claims that the notion of the dividual in Owuor’s text helps us imagine the act of witnessing beyond European and Western thought with regard to being in the world, history, memory, and environment at large. Witnessing, as perceived in this article, is recognised as a mode of being in the world from an everyday perspective, be it individual, political, social, or environmental. In this way, The Dragonfly Sea, gestures toward what I call “slow wit(h)nessing” in this study as an open-ended and permeable act which is significantly constituted by slow and entangled interactions and exchanges among humans, animals, plants, seascapes, landscapes, matter, and spirits through transoceanic experiences in Kenya, China, and Turkey.     Nematic Phase of the N-Component Cubic-Spin Spin Glass in D=3: Liquid-Crystal Phase in a Dirty Magnet

    Artun, Erbil Can/0000-0002-9624-3124A nematic phase, previously seen in the n= 3 classical Heisenberg spin-glass system, occurs in the n-component cubic-spin spin-glass system, between the low-temperature spin-glass phase and the-high temperature disordered phase, for number of components n >= 3, in spatial dimension n= 3, thus constituting a liquid-crystal phase in a dirty (quenched-disordered) magnet. This result is obtained from renormalization-group calculations that are exact on the hierarchical lattice and, equivalently, approximate on the cubic spatial lattice. The nematic phase completely intervenes between the spin-glass phase and the disordered phase.     Uluslararası hukukun genel kurallarına paralel olarak Avrupa İnsan Hakları Sözleşmesi (AİHS) hukuku sisteminde Avrupa İnsan Hakları Mahkemesine (AİHM) başvurulmadan önce sözleşmeci devletin iç hukukundaki başvuru yollarının tüketilmesi zorunluluğu bulunmaktadır. İç hukuk yollarının tüketilmesi zorunluluğu esasen sözleşmeyle kurulan koruma mekanizmasının, ulusal insan hakları savunma sistemlerine göre ikincil nitelikte olmasından ileri gelir. İkincillik prensibi ise sözleşmenin 13. maddesinde düzenlenen hak veya özgürlük ihlallerine ilişkin sözleşmeci devletler tarafından iç hukukta etkili hukuk yolları kurulacağı taahhüdünden kaynaklanmaktadır. Çalışmamızın ilk ana bölümünün ilk alt başlığında öncelikle iç hukuk yollarının tüketilmesi ilkesinin amacı ve bu ilkenin AİHM tarafından her başvurunun özelliğine göre belirli bir esneklik çerçevesinde uygulanması ele alınmıştır. İkinci alt başlıkta, başvurucunun iç hukuk yollarına başvururken usul ve kurallara riayet etmesi ve ihlal edildiğini iddia ettiği sözleşme hükmünü en azından zımnen ve özü itibariyle ileri sürmesi sorumluluğu ele alınmıştır.In the law of the European Convention on Human Rights, in parallel with the general rules of international law, there is an obligation to exhaust the remedies in the domestic law of the contracting State before applying to the European Court of Human Rights. The obligation to exhaust domestic remedies actually stems from the fact that the protection mechanism established by the Convention is subsidiary compared to national human rights defense systems. The principle of subsidiarity arises from the assumption that an effective legal remedy will be established by the contracting States in national law regarding the violation of rights or freedoms regulated in Article 13 of the Convention. The first subheading of main part of the study focuses on the purpose of existence of the principle of exhaustion of domestic remedies and the application of this rule by the European Court of Human Rights within a flexibility according to the characteristics of each application. In the second subheading, the applicant's obligation to comply with the procedural rules when applying for domestic legal remedies and to assert, at least implicitly and in substance, the provision of the Convention allegedly violated in the application to the national authorities was examined

    Optimal Dead Band Control of Occupant Thermostats for Grid-Interactive Homes

    Efficient and grid-aware management of home-scale heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems is one of the key enablers of demand-side management (DSM) and associated grid services in the residential sector. HVACs regulate the indoor temperature around a set point through a thermostat operating within a closed-loop control scheme. Conventional thermostats typically have a built-in temperature dead band or differential where the thermostat is idle, and HVAC stays at the most recent state (On/Off). The temperature dead band is an important control parameter that can help save energy as well as preventing frequent On/Off switching cycles leading to excessive wear and tear on the equipment. However, strategic and dynamic adjustment of the dead band can be a challenging task for an occupant. This paper proposes a mixed-integer linear program (MILP)-based tuning scheme to optimally determine the dead band. The novelty in this formulation is the inclusion of thermostat hysteresis curve modeled by piecewise techniques for tuning the dead band accurately. The proposed formulation is solved as a receding horizon manner for normal as well as under a demand response (DR) event and has been found it can achieve up to 10% reduction in energy consumption without degrading the regulation performance significantly.Conference Proceedings Citation Index - Scienc

    Enhancing Solar Convection Analysis With Multi-Core Processors and Gpus

The time-consuming nature of calculations, particularly in the domain of solar convection, poses a significant challenge for Astrophysicists seeking to analyze new data efficiently. Because they let different kinds of data be worked on separately, parallel algorithms are a good way to speed up this kind of work. A lot of this study is about how to use both multi-core computers and GPUs to do math work about solar energy at the same time. Cutting down on the time it takes to work with data is the main goal. This way, new data can be looked at more quickly and without having to practice for a long time. It works well when you do things in parallel, especially when you use GPUs for 3D tasks, which speeds up the work a lot. This is proof of how important it is to adjust the parallelization methods based on the size of the numbers. But for 2D math, computers with more than one core work better. The results not only fix bugs in models of solar convection, but they also show that speed changes a little based on the gear and how it is processed.Emerging Sources Citation Inde

    Fractal Analysis of Cardiac Spectra

    Cardiac diseases are one of the main reasons for mortality in modern, industrialized societies, and they cause high expenses in public health systems. Therefore, it is important to develop analytical methods to improve cardiac diagnostics. The heart's electric activity was first modeled using a set of nonlinear differential equations. Variations of cardiac spectra originating from deterministic dynamics are investigated. Analyzing the power spectra of a normal human heart presents the His-Purkinje network, which possesses a fractal-like structure. Phase space trajectories are extracted from the time series graph of ECG. Lower values of fractal dimension, D, indicate dynamics that are more coherent. If D has non-integer values greater than two when the system becomes chaotic or strange attractor. Recently, the development of a fast and robust method, that can be applied to multichannel physiologic signals, was reported. The convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) method was also applied to patient-specific ECG classification for real-time heart monitoring. This manuscript investigates two different ECG systems produced from normal and abnormal human hearts to introduce an auxiliary phase space method in conjunction with ECG signals for diagnosing heart diseases. Here, the data for each person includes two signals based on V4 and modified lead III (MLIII), respectively. The fractal analysis method is employed on the trajectories constructed in phase space, from which the fractal dimension D is obtained using the box-counting method. It is observed that, the second signals (i.e., MLIII) have larger D values than the first signals (i.e., V4 ), predicting more randomness yet more information. The lowest value of D (i.e., 1.708) indicates the perfect oscillation of the normal heart, and the highest value of D (i.e., 1.863) presents the abnormal heart's randomness. Our significant finding is that the phase space picture presents the distribution of the peak heights from the ECG spectra, giving valuable information about heart activities in conjunction with ECG. © 2024, Symmetrion.
