    The Self and the Other: Individual Emotions and Ontological Security in Turkish Foreign Policy

    Emotions and ontological security open up one of the latest avenues in International Relations (IR). An increasing number of interdisciplinary approaches have been engaging in emotions and ontological security, for example, foreign policy analysis. However, academic research is scarce concerning the triangulation of emotions, foreign policy, and individual ontological security. Driven by the gap in the literature, the study analyzes how Turkey's foreign policy decisions influence individual existentialism in terms of ontological security during the AKP era. A subsidiary question addresses how Turkey's foreign policy decisions adjust/affect individual emotions towards its most engaged and interacted countries. Based on Ontological Security Theory (OST), the study has conducted 20 interviews. The questions cover Turkey's foreign policy milestones: the start of the EU accession negotiations, the "one minute incident," the Mavi Marmara incident, and the Arab Uprisings and the Syrian Civil War. The questions aim to reveal people's emotional reactions to and descriptions of such events. The interview transcripts are analyzed in a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) context. Through CDA, the individuals' perceptions of risk, threat, and danger are analyzed to seek the determinants of growing existential uncertainty in tandem with significant foreign policy decisions of the AKP government. This study finds that foreign policy decisions in Turkey impact individuals' emotions based on key events. Through the case of Turkey, the study contributes to the emerging literature on emotions and ontological security by studying the dimensions between foreign policy and individual insecurities and emotions.We would like to thank Prof. Bahar Rumelili and Prof. Ty Solomon for providing insights into the earlier drafts of this paper.     Sınırların kalktığı kozmopolit bir dünya düzeninin ve bir dünya vatandaşlığı idealinin tesis edilebileceğine ilişkin umudun giderek zayıfladığı, buna karşın sınırları korumaya yönelik eğilimlerin ve ulus kimlik vurgusunun yükseldiği günümüzde, birçok çağdaş siyaset felsefecisi artık sınırları ve ulus devleti verili ve değişmez kabul ediyor ve (liberal) ulus devletlerin küresel yahut devletler üstü dayanışmanın en temel kaynağı olacağını iddia ediyorlar. Küresel siyasette ve siyaset felsefesindeki bu eğilimler göz önüne alındığında iki eseri yeniden birlikte okumamız gerekiyor. Bunlardan ilki, bu konuda öncü bir eser olan, barışı tesis edebilmek için uluslararası bir devlet federasyonunun zorunluluğuna işaret eden Kant’ın Ebedi Barış Üzerine taslağı. Diğeri ise siyaset felsefesindeki yukarıda özetlediğim güncel gelişmeleri tarihsel olarak önceleyen, zamanının küresel eşitlik ve sınırların esnediği/kalktığı kozmopolit uluslararası düzen tahayyüllerinin gerisine düşmekle sert bir biçimde eleştirilmiş John Rawls’un Halkların Yasası eseri. Rawls, bu eserde Kant’ın fikir olarak önümüze koyduğu bir devletler federasyonunun uluslararası düzlemde nasıl oluşturulabileceğine ilişkin ideali (yol haritasını) resmetmeye ve halklar arasında Kantçı bir hipotetik sözleşmenin nasıl olabileceğini somutlaştırmaya çalışıyor. Bu çalışma, Rawls’un uluslararası siyaset teorisindeki Kantçı izleği sürmeye çalışarak, Halkların Yasası’nın ne ölçüde Kant’ın Ebedi Barış Üzerine eserinde ortaya koyduğu uluslararası barış fikrini geliştirdiğini ve günümüz toplumlarının şartlarına uyarladığını incelemeyi hedefliyor.     Exploring the Transformation of the Electric Vehicle Business Ecosystem in Türkiye: Comparative Analysis of Electric Vehicle Adoption and Charging Infrastructure

    Bu tez, 2010-2023 yılları arasında Türkiye'nin elektrikli araç iş ekosisteminin (EVBE) gelişimini ve dinamiklerini inceleyerek, elektrikli araç (EV) benimsenmesi ve şarj noktası gelişimini diğer ülkelerle kıyaslamalı olarak incelemektedir. Kapsamlı data analizi ile global EV stok adedi ve şarj noktası gelişimi ile Türkiye EV ekosisteminin gelişimini ortaya koymaktadır. Araştırma, Türkiye'nin EV stoğu ve şarj noktası gelişimini sayısal trend analizi yöntemiyle inceleyerek eşit aralık kategorizasyonuna göre oluşturduğu kategorilendirmeye göre diğer ülkelerle kıyaslamaktadır. Araştırma, Türkiye'nin EV stok adetlerinin her geçen yıl arttığını toplam araç stoğunda payının yükseldiğini ancak öncü ülkelere göre bu gelişimin sınırlı kaldığını göstermektedir. Şarj noktası gelişimi incelendiğinde ise yıldan yıla büyüme gösterdiği, halka açık şarj noktası gelişiminde hızlı şarj noktalarının arttığı ve şarj ağı gelişiminin diğer ülkelere kıyasla daha iyi olduğu görülmektedir. Türkiye'nin 2030 yılı için hedeflediği EV stok adedi ve şarj noktası adetlerine ulaşılması için şarj ağı gelişiminde iyi ilerleme patikasında olduğu gözlemlenmiştir. Öte yandan EV stok hedeflerine ulaşabilmek için çok daha agresif bir gelişim göstermesi gerektiği gözlemlenmiştir. Öneriler arasında finansal teşviklerin genişletilmesi, kamu-özel sektör ortaklıklarının güçlendirilmesi ve şarj altyapısının mevcut hızla geliştirilmesine devam edilmesi bulunmaktadır. Bulgular, Türkiye'nin EV pazarını küresel pazarda öncü hale getirmek ve gelecek dönem beklentilerine ulaşabilmek için EV ekosisteminde yapılandırılmış politikaların uygulanmasının gerekli olduğunu göstermektedir. Bu tez, Türkiye'nin EVBE gelişimini diğer ülkelerle karşılaştırmalı olarak anlayabilmek için çeşitlendirilmiş metriklerle analizler sunarak, sürdürülebilir ulaşım konusundaki akademik tartışmalara önemli katkılarda bulunmaktadır.This thesis examines the development and dynamics of Türkiye's electric vehicle business ecosystem (EVBE) from 2010 to 2023, comparing electric vehicle (EV) adoption and charging point development with other countries. Comprehensive data analysis, it highlights the growth of global EV stock and charging points alongside Türkiye's EV ecosystem. The research utilizes numerical trend analysis to categorize and compare Türkiye's EV stock and charging point development with other nations. Findings indicate a yearly increase in Türkiye's EV stock, with its share of the total vehicle stock rising, although progress remains limited compared to leading countries. There is significant year-on-year growth in charging point development, particularly in public fast-charging points, outperforming some other countries. Despite Türkiye's progress on the path to charging point development, a more aggressive development approach is necessary for EV stock to achieve its 2030 targets. Recommendations include expanding financial incentives, fostering public-private partnerships and continuing the development of charging infrastructure at the same pace. The results underscore the need for structured policies in Türkiye's EV ecosystem to position it as a leader in the global market and meet future expectations. This thesis contributes significantly to academic discussions on sustainable transportation by providing diversified metrics for understanding Türkiye's EVBE development in a comparative context

    Eye-Hand Coordination Training: a Systematic Comparison of 2d, Vr, and Ar Display Technologies and Task Instructions

    Christie Digital; IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Community (VGTC); JPMorgan Chase and Co.; University of Central Florida (UCF)Previous studies on Eye-Hand Coordination Training (EHCT) focused on the comparison of user motor performance across different hardware with cross-sectional studies. In this paper, we compare user motor performance with an EHCT setup in Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and on a 2D touchscreen display in a longitudinal study. Through a ten-day user study, we thoroughly analyzed the motor performance of twenty participants with five task instructions focusing on speed, error rate, accuracy, precision, and none. As a novel evaluation criterion, we also analyzed the participants' performance in terms of effective throughput. The results showed that each task instruction has a different effect on one or more psychomotor characteristics of the trainee, which highlights the importance of personalized training programs. Regarding different display technologies, the majority of participants could see more improvement in VR than in 2D or AR.     Managerial Activism

    We examine managerial activism through collective action in the corporate sector. Activist managers spend considerable resources in pursuing pro-business and pro-manager issues. While managerial activism is valuable in the pursuit of pro-business strategies, pro-manager agendas may exacerbate agency problems. Our evidence shows that firm performance improves with managerial activism through collective pro-business effort but is diminished by pro-manager activism. Furthermore, pro-business activism typically increases CEO compensation, whereas pro-manager activism decreases it. Firms that benefit most from collective managerial activism are those that are government dependent, have more intangible assets, or operate in industries with low competition. Overall, pro-business managerial activism adds value to firms, especially when information dissemination is more essential due to firm characteristics

    Exploring the Acoustic Identity of Derinkuyu Underground City

    Sounds play a significant role in shaping the identity of spaces and places, yet the acoustic environment of underground cities remains relatively unexplored in the existing literature. Derinkuyu Underground City stands as a prominent cultural heritage site, boasting a capacity of 20,000 people and serving as one of the largest underground cities globally. While geological and structural studies have been conducted on such sites, investigations into indoor acoustics, a crucial aspect of the physical environment, are notably lacking. This study initiates an initial examination of the sound environment within Derinkuyu Underground City, aiming to analyse its features acoustically. Undertaking a PhD study, our research endeavours to gather essential data essential for the preservation of the site's current acoustic environment as a cultural heritage site while also generating valuable insights for the design and construction of future underground cities. In this paper, we present a preliminary assessment of the typologies of various spaces within Derinkuyu Underground City, exploring their unique acoustic features. By characterizing and understanding the acoustic properties of diverse spaces within the underground city, we seek to understand how acoustic might contribute to the identity of these spaces and provide foundational knowledge for both preservation efforts and future underground urban design initiatives

    Healthcare Workers' Memories in the Covid-19 Pandemic: the Role of Visual Perspective and Event Centrality in Subjective Temporal Distance

    We investigated the factors associated with subjective temporal distance of pandemic-related events in a sample of healthcare workers. A total of 257 healthcare workers were asked to recall two COVID-19 pandemic-related events that impacted them the most at the beginning of the pandemic (April-May 2020), and rated event centrality, phenomenological characteristics, subjective temporal distance, and visual perspective (field vs. observer) for each reported event. Results showed a negative relationship between subjective temporal distance and event centrality only for memories remembered from the field perspective (field memories), but not those remembered from the observer perspective (observer memories). Furthermore, event centrality enhanced recollection of sensory and perceptual details, which, in turn, resulted in memories being felt temporally closer to people. This paper contributes to the imperative need for robust security measures in AI systems based on the application of cryptographic techniques. This research analyzes AI-ML systems vulnerabilities and associated risks and identifies existing cryptographic methods that could constitute security measures to mitigate such risks. Information assets subject to cyberattacks are identified, such as training data and model parameters, followed by a description of existing encryption algorithms and a suggested approach to use a suitable technique, such as homomorphic encryption CKKS, along with digital signatures based on ECDSA to protect the digital assets through all the AI system life cycle. These methods aim to safeguard sensitive data, algorithms, and AI-generated content from unauthorized access and tampering. The outcome offers potential and practical solutions against privacy breaches, adversarial attacks, and misuse of AI-generated content.     Investigation of Feature Extraction Methods for Evaluating Vibration-Based Fault Potential in Rotating Equipment in Flat Steel Industry

    Tahmine dayalı bakım (PdM), sanayide bakım verimliliğini ve üretim süreçlerini iyileştirmek için kullanılan önemli bir veri bilimi uygulamasıdır. Sensör tabanlı izleme ve bakım raporları gibi güvenilir verilere sahip olmak, PdM modellerinin başarısı için kritiktir. Ancak, bakım verilerinin kullanımıyla ilgili zorluklar nedeniyle, bu modellerin uygulanmasında bakım ekiplerinin ve uzmanların desteğine ihtiyaç duyulur. En büyük sorun, zaman kısıtlamaları nedeniyle bakım ekiplerinin kapsamlı ve etiketli veri sağlamasının zor olmasıdır, bu da verilerin eksik veya sınırlı kalmasına yol açar. Çok sayıda durum izleme veri seti bulunsa da küçük çaplı bakım işlemleri için etiketlenmiş veri setleri nadirdir. Bu boşluğu doldurmak için, bu tez çalışmasında insan müdahalesine gerek kalmadan etiket üretmeyi hedefleyen bir yaklaşım önerilmektedir. Bu tezde, kritik varlıklardan toplanan titreşim verilerinden bilgi çıkarmak için gerçek zamanlı değişim noktası tespiti (CPD) algoritmalarının kullanılması önerilmektedir. Değişim noktalarını otomatik olarak tespit ederek ham veriyi anlamlı özelliklere dönüştürmek, makine öğrenmesi modellerini iyileştirir ve PdM modellerinin doğruluğunu artırır.CPD yönteminin uygulanabilirliğini göstermek için bir üretim şirketinden alınan titreşim verileri kullanılmıştır. Bu kapsamlı yaklaşım, bakım uygulamalarının güvenilirliğini ve endüstriyel sistemlerin uzun vadeli güvenilirliğini artırmada uygulama alanları sunmaktadırPredictive maintenance (PdM) has become one of the key applications of advanced data science for the industry, designed to improve maintenance efficiency manufacturing processes. Sufficient and reliable data, including sensor-based condition monitoring and maintenance reports data from industrial applications, is crucial for building PdM models. However, due to the many barriers and complexities in using maintenance data, effective implementation of these models requires the skills and assistance of maintenance teams and subject matter experts. The major problem is the time constraints that make it difficult to encourage maintenance teams to provide thorough, labeled data, leading to maintenance data that is often missing or only partially accessible. Although many condition monitoring datasets are available, there are very few tagged maintenance datasets. To address this gap, an approach is proposed to produce human-independent labels and improve research options for these datasets. In this study, we suggest the use of real-time change point detection (CPD) algorithms to extract insights from vibration data collected from critical assets. Automating the identification and labeling of change points along with statistical methods improves the feature extraction process, turning raw data into valuable attributes. These attributes are essential for training machine learning models, which in turn enhances the accuracy of predictive maintenance systems. To assess how well the CPD method works, we analyzed vibration data from equipment in a manufacturing company. A pre-labeled dataset was used to back up our findings, highlighting how effective CPD techniques are at extracting features. This approach not only improves the reliability of maintenance processes but also helps ensure the long-term stability of industrial systems, offering practical insights for real-world application
