Harma, Mehmet/0000-0002-3955-1526; Aktas, Busra Eylem/0000-0002-0125-7903; Sumer, Nebi/0000-0002-7460-4515Prior work has documented that parental psychological and behavioral control have varying impacts on self-regulation skills and social-academic outcomes in early adolescence, with effects differing across cultures. The present study explores the role of psychological and behavioral control in predicting adjustment difficulties and academic self-confidence through self-regulatory skills among early adolescents in Turkiye using data from mothers and their children (N = 295, Ngirls=145, Mage=12.14 years). The results yielded that parental behavioral control, but not psychological control, predicts self-regulation of adolescents, which, in turn, predicts adjustment and academic self-efficacy. Our results underscore the pivotal role of parental knowledge and monitoring, mainly through behavioral control strategies, in fostering psychological adjustment and academic self-efficacy in the Turkish cultural context. The discussion delves into the potential culture-specific effects of psychological control and the universal influence of behavioral control during early adolescence.Social Science Citation Inde

Navigating Legal Avenues: the Complex Landscape of Disaster Accountability in Turkey

Aslan, Ozlem/0000-0003-2698-4282As an increasing number of citizens are turning to administrative courts to seek remedies and address deficiencies in disaster management, disaster trials in Turkey emerge as critical sites for exploring the law's potential and limitations in fostering disaster justice. In this article, I examine two significant flood-related disasters and the role of "legal technicalities" in advancing disaster justice within the administrative courts of Turkey. The precedent-setting rulings of these cases challenged the disaster management system, which functions through a paternalistic framework. This framework defines the state's involvement in disasters as providing post-disaster aid to victims and survivors rather than prioritizing risk mitigation and prevention. By focusing on the accounts of lawyers as the "legal engineers" who mediate between the experiences of survivors and the legal technicalities, I aim first to provide insights into the evolving dynamics between citizens and state institutions concerning disaster accountability in Turkey. Second, I endeavor to contribute to socio-legal scholarship by employing "legal technicalities" as an analytical framework to investigate how disaster victims and their legal representatives navigate complex bureaucratic and procedural challenges in their efforts to reshape the parameters of disaster accountability.Raoul Wallenberg InstituteRaoul Wallenberg InstituteSocial Science Citation Inde

The Associations Between Deviation From the Balanced Time Perspective and Depression and Anxiety: The Moderator Role of Mindfulness in a Two-Wave Study

    No full text
Deviation from the balanced time perspective (DBTP) refers to difficulties in switching between different time frames in a flexible way by considering the situational demands. DBTP is associated with higher levels of depression and anxiety. Mindfulness acts as a protective mechanism against depression and anxiety. The current study examined the moderator role of mindfulness in the relationship between DBTP and psychological distress. The participants were 243 university students (53.09% women) between ages 18 and 29 (M = 19.88, SD = 1.42) who answered self-report measures of time perspective, mindfulness, anxiety, and depression at two-time points with a five-week time interval. The results showed that the interaction between DBTP and mindfulness measured at time one could prospectively predict both anxiety and depression measured at time two. Mindfulness plays a significant moderating role in the relationship between DBTP and anxiety and depression. The data indicate that for individuals with low levels of DBTP, those with higher mindfulness experience significantly lower anxiety and depression compared to those with lower mindfulness. However, as DBTP increases, anxiety and depression levels in the high mindfulness group rise significantly, ultimately converging with those observed in the low mindfulness group. This indicates that while high mindfulness offers buffering effects against anxiety and depression, these effects diminish under increased DBTP.Social Science Citation Inde

Workplace Microaggressions Against LGBTI Plus Employees in Turkey: a Thematic Analysis of Environmental and Interpersonal Discrimination

    No full text
PurposeThe current study aimed to determine the extent and scope of microaggressions in the workplace directed towards LGBTI+ employees in Turkey.Design/methodology/approachThe research used both quantitative and qualitative data based on 664 statements made by individuals in the "The Situation of LGBTI+ Employees in the Private and Public Sector in Turkey" survey conducted between 2015 and 2020 (n = 2,695). The quantitative data consist of frequencies and the qualitative data center on answers to nine open ended questions regarding LGBTI+ individuals' experiences of discrimination in the workplace. We employed the taxonomy proposed by Nadal et al. (2010) to determine which actions constituted microaggressions and the form they took. We also conducted a critical discourse analysis of the open-ended questions where individuals described their experiences of microaggressions.FindingsMicroaggressions directed at LGBTI+ employees are pervasive in Turkey. Microaggressions largely follow the taxonomy created by Nadal et al. (2010) although we did not find microaggressions in all of the taxonomy's categories. We found that microaggressions mostly take the form of phobic language and mockery followed by heteronormativity, exoticization and disapproval. Two further categories, othering and threatening behaviors, emerged from our data.Originality/valueThis study addresses a significant gap in the literature on workplace microaggressions against LGBTI+ individuals, particularly in non-Western contexts. To our knowledge, it is the first study of its kind conducted in a non-Western Muslim-majority country. The research uniquely captures and critically analyzes the lived experiences of LGBTI+ employees through their own narratives, examining how microaggressions manifest as discriminatory discourses in the workplace.Friedrich Naumann Foundation [2015-2020]The authors express their gratitude to all 2965 participants of the "The Situation of LGBTI+ Employees in the Private and Public Sector" (2015-2020), Kaos GL Association for permission to use the survey data, and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for supporting the research.Emerging Sources Citation Inde

Barzykowski, Krystian/0000-0003-4016-3966The present dataset comprises the performance of adult participants on two experimental tasks designed to measure working memory capacity: the Symmetry Span (SymSPAN) and Operation Span (OSPAN) tasks. Initially, a large sample of 566 participants completed these tasks online. From this pool, a random subset of individuals representing low, medium, and high levels of working memory capacity were invited to participate in two laboratory sessions. In these sessions, spaced one week apart, participants completed the same tasks again. The dataset includes complete performance data from both tasks, along with demographic information such as participants' age and gender. This relatively large dataset offers valuable opportunities for exploratory research on working memory capacity, including analyses of its relative stability, variations over time and across testing environments, individual differences, and contributions to meta-analyses. No full text

Rethinking Performance Measurement in Esports: How Games Shape Coaching Priorities for Amateur Player Development

    No full text
With the rising popularity of esports, the demand for effective performance assessment methods has become critical for coaching practices. Esports performance evaluation remains a complex task due to the unique demands of different games and the dynamic nature of the esports ecosystem. Additionally, the effectiveness of performance indicators in evaluating amateur players in the early stages of their careers remains unclear. To investigate this, we conduct expert interviews with head coaches of three distinct team games, Valorant, PUBG Mobile, and League of Legends, to uncover critical factors that coaches consider in evaluating amateur player performance. Our findings reveal fundamental challenges that question the validity of standardized indicators for performance measurement. Coaches highlighted that while quantitative metrics, such as in-game statistics, are commonly used in tracking player progress, they must be carefully contextualized within the unique demands of each game and the team dynamics. Moreover, coaches underscore that soft skills are as determinant as individual technical skills for fostering future career success in esports, particularly in team-based games where communication and stress management play a crucial role. These findings highlight the need for a more nuanced, coach-driven approach to performance assessment for amateur players. This exploratory study suggests that performance measurement frameworks need to account for context-dependent competencies and player career development in esports. © The Author(s) 202

Human Centric Lighting Design in Offices: a Research on User Lighting Preferences

    No full text
This thesis aims to identify user preferences and human-centered lighting in work environments. A questionnaire was created using 3D interior models prepared using Dialux Evo (DIAL GmbH, 2024) with reference to the TS EN 12461-1 (2021) standard. After a pilot study, the questionnaire was distributed to office workers from various professions and demographic data was collected. The results show that 5000K is the most preferred choice (42.16%), followed by 3000K (33.62%), 4000K (17.95%) and 6000K (6.27%). It was also observed that 300 lx was the least preferred level (23.9%), followed by 750 lx (36.8%) and 500 lx (39.3%). Gender was found to have a significant impact on office layout and color temperature preferences. While women preferred lower color temperatures and open plan offices, men preferred higher temperatures and cubic layouts. In addition, significant differences were found between the tendency of occupational groups to use lighting control systems. Workplace lighting conditions and preferences undoubtedly vary, but they can be categorized. An adaptive lighting system that utilizes modern technology would be a more appropriate choice for work environments

We examine whether training individuals about the riskiness of financial products changes their risk perception in making financial decisions. Conducting a nationwide survey in T & uuml;rkiye, we first map individuals' use of regulated and unregulated financial products in borrowing, saving, and investing. We next train a randomly selected sample of people in three regions where use of unregulated or risky products is high and test their financial preferences by asking them to take the survey after the training. With controls for observable characteristics, our results suggest that training on the riskiness of financial products helps improve individuals' risk perception, and this improvement seems to motivate them to prefer regulated financial products and to seeking professional advice about borrowing, saving, and investment.Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkiye (TUBITAK) [221K006]Authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkiye (TUBITAK). No full text
Automation in service contexts is shifting the hospitality industry drastically through waiter, barista, chef robots, hotel services robots, or smart and interactive gadgets. Understanding customers' interaction with these technologies is crucial to ensure they align with customer expectations, enhance service encounters, and contribute to meaningful service outcomes. This study investigates the quality of customers' interaction with automated service frontline in generating meaningful customer outcomes, drawing from the psychological ownership theory. In particular, this research investigates (1) the impact of functional and relational interaction qualities with automated service frontline on customers' perceived psychological ownership, (2) the role of automated service self-efficacy as a moderator to this relationship, and (3) the consequences of psychological ownership in terms of customer behavioral engagement and well-being. A mixed-method design was used with qualitative studies first (study 1 and study 2) to refine and finalize the proposed conceptual model, followed by a quantitative study (study 3) using questionnaires and structural equation modeling (SEM) to test the proposed hypotheses. Results reveal a comprehensive model linking interaction quality of automated service frontlines, psychological ownership, and desirable consumer outcomes. Specifically, the findings demonstrate that relational interaction quality positively influences psychological ownership, whereas functional interaction quality lacks a direct effect. However, with automated service self-efficacy as a moderator, functional interaction quality significantly enhances psychological ownership. Also, psychological ownership positively relates to customer engagement and well-being. This research advances service automation understanding by exploring interaction quality's effects on psychological ownership and the moderating role of automated service self-efficacy, offering insights into fostering engagement and well-being through emotionally responsive automation
