Vulnerable Populations With Psychological Disorders in Tourism: Methodological Challenges and Recommended Solutions for Empirical Research

    No full text
Vulnerable groups, including travel-eligible tourists with medical conditions (e.g., early- and mid-stage dementia), represent an emerging niche market in the tourism industry that has been largely overlooked in the tourism literature. By identifying and addressing the challenges of conducting empirical research for this population, unreliable and misrepresentative data (and resulting imprudent recommendations) can be avoided. Given that tourism-based interventions may provide a new avenue for patient-oriented treatments, rigorous methodological guidelines are needed to advance knowledge in this interdisciplinary area. This paper provides insights into the potential challenges of empirical research involving tourists with psychological disorders. Collecting primary data from target participants requires preparation and deliberate contemplation when identifying and recruiting travel-eligible tourists. Solutions such as clear recruitment criteria, randomized controlled trials, and integrated health research approaches are recommended. Resultant studies on exposure and outcomes can inform tourism management and marketing strategies regarding these populations.National Natural Science Foundation of China [72102045]; Shanghai Pujiang Program [22PJC020]; European Commission Horizon 2020 [779238-PRODEMOS]This work was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China [72102045], Shanghai Pujiang Program [22PJC020], and the European Commission Horizon 2020 [779238-PRODEMOS]

The Influence of Advertisement Humor on New Product Purchase Intention: Mediation by Emotional Arousal and Cognitive Flexibility

    No full text
PurposeAdvertisements facilitate certain emotions, subsequently influencing purchase intentions. Humor, as an influential way of information expression, is frequently used in ads to elicit emotions. Drawing upon literature on advertisement humor and new product purchase intention and the theory of planned behavior, the study proposes that humor stimulation in advertisements can affect consumers' new product purchase intentions, in which two process mechanisms, namely, emotional arousal and cognitive flexibility, play a mediating effect.Design/methodology/approachTo test the assertions, the authors conduct three experimental studies. The authors' first study assesses the main effect between advertisement humor and purchase intentions. In the second study, the authors show the mediating effects of emotional pleasure, emotional arousal, and cognitive flexibility on the relationship between advertisement humor and purchase intentions. In the first two experiments, the authors study incremental new products. In the third study, the authors study the same mediating relationships for radically new products.FindingsThis study's results show consumers that watch humorous ads are more likely to choose new products than those who watch non-humorous ads (Study 1); compared with non-humorous ads, humorous ads can enhance emotional arousal, thus promoting cognitive flexibility and making consumers more inclined to choose new products (Study 2 and Study 3). That said, the authors find that these mediation effects are only partial.Originality/valueThis study's results have important implications for firms vying to enhance consumers' new product purchase intentions by deploying humorous ads

oai:gcris.khas.edu.tr:20.500.12469/5343The Internet of Things (IoT) represents a cutting-edge technical domain, encompassing billions of intelligent objects capable of bridging the physical and virtual worlds across various locations. IoT services are responsible for delivering essential functionalities. In this dynamic and interconnected IoT landscape, providing high-quality services is paramount to enhancing user experiences and optimizing system efficiency. Service composition techniques come into play to address user requests in IoT applications, allowing various IoT services to collaborate seamlessly. Considering the resource limitations of IoT devices, they often leverage cloud infrastructures to overcome technological constraints, benefiting from unlimited resources and capabilities. Moreover, the emergence of fog computing has gained prominence, facilitating IoT application processing in edge networks closer to IoT sensors and effectively reducing delays inherent in cloud data centers. In this context, our study proposes a cloud-/fog-based service composition for IoT, introducing a novel fuzzy-based hybrid algorithm. This algorithm ingeniously combines Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) and Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) optimization algorithms, taking into account energy consumption and Quality of Service (QoS) factors during the service selection process. By leveraging this fuzzy-based hybrid algorithm, our approach aims to revolutionize service composition in IoT environments by empowering intelligent decision-making capabilities and ensuring optimal user satisfaction. Our experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy in successfully fulfilling service composition requests by identifying suitable services. When compared to recently introduced methods, our hybrid approach yields significant benefits. On average, it reduces energy consumption by 17.11%, enhances availability and reliability by 8.27% and 4.52%, respectively, and improves the average cost by 21.56%

    No full text
Destinations and hotel businesses take advantage of many benefits of the online world. Extensive qualitative (review texts) and quantitative (review scores and room rates) data sources enable them to assess their positions through the eyes of their customers. The aim of this study is to propose a method focusing on customer reviews and rates in order to help hotel businesses with assessment of their positioning strategies. The dataset included a selection of five-star hotels in Istanbul, a city destination of Turkey. Room rates and the findings from a thematic narrative analysis of TripAdvisor reviews from a cognitive and experiential perspective were combined to create a position map. The findings extend traditional classification systems and reveal three competitive groups of five-star hotels with specific attributes in a city destination. Other findings offer some insight for hotel and destination managers, enabling them to evaluate the performance of positioning strategies of five-star hotels in the market

Deciphering the Cluster-Specific Marker Genes Via Integration of Single Cell Rna Sequencing Datasets

    No full text
Experimental data from brain tissues are critical for tackling the problems in brain development and revealing the underlying mechanisms of disease states. However, obtaining the brain tissue is a major challenge. Human brain organoids hold remarkable promise for this goal, but they suffer from substantial organoid-to-organoid variability. We performed a data-driven analysis on single-cell RNA-sequencing data using 17775 cells isolated from 2 individual organoids. The main goal was to accurately integrate the data coming from unmatched datasets, cluster the cells based on their similarity levels and predict the differentially expressed genes per cell types to reveal novel brain cell types and markers. This research opens a way to map human brain cells and develop novel and precise machine learning algorithms for accurate scRNA-Seq data analysis. © 2023 IEEE

    Manevi Tazminat ve Cezalandırma Fonksiyonu

    No full text

    No full text
Anahtar Sözcükler: Komplo teorileri, Komplo inançları, Medya kullanımı, Haber kaynağı, Partizanlık, KutuplaşmaDifferent ideological tendencies underlie the conspiracy theories that create different enemies by pointing the finger at various powerful groups behind important events. One of these tendencies is party affiliation, and conspiracy beliefs associated with affiliation to a particular political party are defined as partisan conspiracy theories, opening a separate categorization in conspiracy narratives. This study examines the partisan conspiracy beliefs in the two poles: anti-government and pro-government, based on the increasingly polarized sociopolitical atmosphere of Turkey. I investigated how individuals who feel close to different political party groups differ in their partisan conspiracy beliefs, and which variables of news use beyond conspiratorial predisposition and party proximity predict partisan conspiracy beliefs. An online survey (N = 249) based on convenience sampling, provides quantitative evidence for the existence of partisan conspiracy beliefs in Turkey. The findings suggest that participants in the pro-government group believe more pro-government conspiracy beliefs than the opposition group, at statistically significant levels, while the opposition group have higher tendency to have anti-government conspiracy beliefs than the supporters of the government. Those who feel an affiliation to the new opposition parties, which were established after recently leaving the ruling party, do not believe in partisan conspiracy beliefs as much as the opposition group and have almost the same level of belief as the participants without party affiliation. While watching the news on A Haber TV, a pro-government channel, explained the belief in pro-government conspiracy theories, watching the news on Fox TV, an anti-government outlet, and following the news on Twitter were significantly related to belief in anti-government conspiracy theories. Consequently, this research broadens the scope of conspiracy theories in Turkey in academic research and reveals significant findings on how conspiracy beliefs are related to party affiliation and news source use. We numerically study the thermal transport in the classical inertial nearest-neighbor XY ferromagnet in d = 1, 2, 3, the total number of sites being given by N = Ld, where L is the linear size of the system. For the thermal conductance sigma, we obtain sigma(T, L)L delta(d)= A(d) e-B(d) [L gamma (d)T ]eta(d) (with ez q(d) q equivalent to [1+(1-q)z]1/(1-q); ez1 = ez; A(d) > 0; B(d) > 0; q(d) > 1; eta(d) > 2; delta >= 0; gamma(d) > 0), for all values of L gamma(d)T for d = 1, 2, 3. In the L -> infinity limit, we have sigma proportional to 1/L rho sigma(d) with rho sigma(d) = delta(d)+gamma(d)eta(d)/[q(d)-1]. The material conductivity is given by kappa = sigma Ld proportional to 1/L rho kappa(d) (L -> infinity) with rho kappa(d) = rho sigma(d) - d. Our numerical results are consistent with 'conspiratory' d-dependences of (q, eta, delta, gamma), which comply with normal thermal conductivity (Fourier law) for all dimensions.(c) 2023 Published by Elsevier B.V.CNPq (Brazilian agency); Faperj (Brazilian agency); BAGEP Award of the Science Academy, TurkeyWe acknowledge fruitful remarks by G. The Vital Role of Diabetes Nurse Educators in Smoking Cessation: A Case Study from Türkiye

    No full text
This paper discusses the development and implementation of a smoking cessation training program for diabetes nurse educators. People with diabetes who smoke have a significantly higher risk of morbidity and mortality. Smoking greatly increases diabetes complications. Surveys were conducted to ascertain how frequently nurses counseled patients to quit and their interest in cessation training. Observations of nurse- patient interactions and interviews with diabetes nurses facilitated the development of a culturally sensi- tive cessation training program. Survey results revealed that diabetes nurse educators recognized the need for training in smoking cessation, as many patients with diabetes do not consider smoking to be harm- ful for their health. A two-day workshop was developed for nurses on the specific harms of smoking for diabetes patients, including hands-on training in cessation counseling and motivational interviewing. Two months after training, nurses reported that the skills they acquired gave them confidence to counsel patients but identified four challenges to conducting cessation in their clinical settings. Diabetes nurse educators can play a pivotal role in delivering cessation. Training and overcoming challenges to implementation are urgently needed in the time of coronavirus disease 2019 given the dual risks of diabetes and smoking for severe complications.Global BridgesThis study was funded by Global Bridges
