Investigation of External Factors for Wireless Capacitive Power Transfer Systems
Capacitive power transfer (CPT) technology has gained more and more importance in recent years. This paper investigates the effects of temperature and relative humidity on CPT system performance. The conventional four-plate horizontal and vertical coupler structures are built to observe the variations of coupling capacitances under external factors. The pressure of the coupler ambient is kept constant, and the effects of temperature and relative humidity are reviewed separately. The different temperature (25 - 105 & DEG;C) and relative humidity (43 - 80% RH) levels are reviewed in these scenarios. The obtained results indicate that the values of coupling capacitances are inversely proportional to the temperature level, whereas the values of coupling capacitances are directly proportional to the relative humidity level. In addition, the visible changes happen in coupling capacitances after 45 & DEG;C and 55 & DEG;C for horizontally and vertically arranged four-plate coupler structures, respectively. It is also observed that relative humidity level becomes a critical point after 60% RH for both coupler structures. Among the coupling capacitances, the main capacitances are the most affected during the variations for both couplers. This study is expected to be a reference for the researchers on external factors in CPT systems
Reassessing the Exploitation Charge in Sweatshop Labor
One common argument against sweatshops is that they are exploitative. Exploitation is taken as sufficient reason to condemn sweatshops as unjust and to argue that sweatshop owners have a moral duty to offer better working conditions to their employees. In this article, I argue that any exploitation theory falls short of covering all standard cases of sweatshops as exploitative. In going through the most prominent theories of exploitation, I explain why any given sweatshop can either be wrongfully exploitative or not, depending on the exploitation theory being considered and the circumstances of the application. I conclude by suggesting that sweatshop critics had better find other reasons besides the charge of exploitation to protest or interfere with these workplaces
Media Effects in a Polarized Political System: the Case of Turkey
Can the media influence vote choice when the media and the party system are highly polarized, and vote shifts are infrequent? We argue affirmatively that media significantly influences vote choice even in such systems. First, we show that information filtered through the media has an independent effect on vote choice. Second, we link respondents' newspaper choices in the pre-election survey with the favorability of major political parties in their newspapers during the campaign period. Third, we provide rich empirical data from media content and voter surveys. Our analyses suggest that media content has a significant effect in influencing party support and vote switches during the campaign periods of four general elections between 2002 and 2015 in the increasingly polarized setting of Turkey. We further break down this effect to study how favorable coverage and visibility influence party support differently among partisan loyalists and switchers.Tuerkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Arastirma Kurumu [111K006]Funding was provided by Tuerkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Arastirma Kurumu (Grant No. TOVAG, 111K006, 2012)
Computational Chemistry and Molecular Modeling of Reversible Mao Inhibitors
Proper elucidation of drug-target interaction is one of the most significant steps at the early stages of the drug development research. Computer-aided drug design tools have substantial contribution to this stage. In this chapter, we specifically concentrate on the computational methods widely used to develop reversible inhibitors for monoamine oxidase (MAO) isozymes. In this context, current computational techniques in identifying the best drug candidates showing high potency are discussed. The protocols of structure-based drug design methodologies, namely, molecular docking, in silico screening, and molecular dynamics simulations, are presented. Employing case studies of safinamide binding to MAO B, we demonstrate how to use AutoDock 4.2.6 and NAMD software packages. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature
Chemical profile, antiproliferative and antibacterial activities and docking studies of essential oil and hexane fraction of hydrosol from fresh leaf of Plectranthus amboinicus (Lour.) Spreng.
Essential oils are commonly extracted from plants by hydrodistillation in which an aqueous phase called hydrosol is obtained. Like essential oil, this by-product of distillation can be a source of natural bioactive molecules with health benefits. This study aimed at the investigation of the chemical profile, antiproliferative and antibacterial activities of essential oil and hexane fraction of hydrosol from Plectrunthus amboinicus (family Lamiacease) fresh leaf cultivated in Sudan. Essential oil was obtained by hydrodistilation and hexane fraction (HF) was derived from hydrosol by liquid -liquid extraction. Results showed that the phenolic monoterpene thymol (72.9%) was the dominant component of the essential oil while the HF was characterized by the presence of long-chain (n-C29 to n-C68) alkanes (91.4%). The HF showed highest antiproliferative activity against the colon cancer HT29 (IC50 9.2 mu g/mL) and HCT116 (IC50 7.7 mu g/mL) cell lines. The essential oil exerted best antibacterial activity with highest inhibition (22.0-22.3 mm) and minimum inhibitory concentration (31 mu g/mL) against the Gram positive bacteria Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus. In silico study showed that the major components of the oil displayed higher docking scores than those present in the HF suggesting an antagonistic effect by other molecules in the essential oil. In conclusion, beside the essential oil, the hydrosol possesses promising bioactive composition suggesting that it could be exploited for further therapeutic applications
BaDENAS: Retina Damar Segmentasyonu için Bayes Tabanli Sinir Mimarisi Arama
Istanbul Technical University (ITU); TUBITAK BILGEM; TurkcellIn this paper, a novel visible light communication (VLC) and three-dimensional (3D) positioning (VLP) algorithm based on spatial modulation (SM) with dimming capability is proposed. With the help of the signal and pilot symbols observed by a user with two photodetectors (PD) on the receiver, the detection of the transmitted data with the estimated channel and dimming coefficients is performed, and at the same time, the position of the user represented in 3D is determined. The computer simulations conclude that the root mean square (RMS) values of the proposed algorithm in 3D position determination are very low, and the bit error rate (BER) performance is very high. © 2023 IEEE
Interim Injunctions in Industrial Property Law
2Injunctions are widely requested in the field of industrial property and and the legislator, in terms of precautionary measures, has decided that the Industrial Property Article 159 of the IPL contains a special provision. Accordingly, with the IPL the holders of protected rights have complained of violations of those rights or of serious and imminent if they can prove that they are in imminent danger of infringement, they must may request an interim injunction both within the scope of the lawsuit and before the lawsuit is filed. The Article includes, but is not limited to, the seizure of infringing products and the means exclusively used in their production and their storage, the cessation and prevention of infringing acts, and the provision of security for the compensation of any damages. The court may decide on any measure to ensure the effectiveness of the judgement. The rule of procedural law stating that interim injunctions cannot be granted to resolve the merits of the case is applicable to industria,l property in the field of industrial property. Furthermore, although Article 159 of the IPL was drafted for infringement-based cases, interim injunctions may be granted in various aspects in other industrial property-based cases. The issue is analysed in depth in terms of the necessity to observe the balance of interests between the parties and in this context, the necessity to consider the injunction decision within the framework of the principle of proportionality, th1e diversity of the means of proof, and the reference to the CCP in Article 159 of the IPL. is an issue that needs to be analysed. In this study, Article 159 of the IPL; abrogated By showing the situation in the Decree Laws, the provisions of the CCP that are applicable The article has been analysed with reference to judicial decisions and doctrinal opinions
The Mediator Role of Willingness To Sacrifice in the Association Between Socio-Economic Status and Relationship Satisfaction
This study aimed to investigate the potential underlying mechanisms for why couples from lower socioeconomic status (SES) tend to experience poor-quality romantic relationships from two distinct perspectives: the self-protection hypothesis and social class from a culture perspective. We examined the indirect effect of willingness to sacrifice personal interests on the association between SES and relationship satisfaction using a representative sample from Turkey through cross-sectional self-report scales (N = 1170; M-age=47.44; SD = 11.68). Participants completed a series of questions, including willingness to sacrifice, relationship satisfaction, and SES questions. Multiple regression analyses revealed that willingness to sacrifice did not have a buffering or facilitator role in the association between SES and relationship satisfaction. These findings suggest that willingness to sacrifice is essential for relationship satisfaction regardless of SES. Overall, this study contributes to understanding the role of willingness to sacrifice in romantic relationships and its relationship with SES.Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey [120K392]This research was funded by a grant from the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey to the last author (Grant number: 120K392
Ayasofya'yı Günlük Mekansal Deneyimi Üzerinden Okumak
Hagia Sophia was inaugurated in July 2020 as the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque. With its conversion into a mosque it has been discussed over its political, social, and religious values by states, institutions, and congregations. Relevant professional groups have followed the spatial interventions to the cultural heritage monument. On the other hand, the new place Hagia Sophia transformed into has not been studied much in terms of the spatial program of the site and the experience of the place. This thesis addresses this gap in the literature and explores how Hagia Sophia works as a place in its everyday life. How is Hagia Sophia constructed as a place with its spatial order, management, and visiting rules? How does the new function as a mosque come together with its museum and church pasts? What is the relationship between the mosque that is presented in the official discourse of the conversion and the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque? How do visitors with different backgrounds and genders, who come with different purposes, experience the place? In this thesis, I aim to provide a comprehensive view of Hagia Sophia after its conversion into a mosque. For this, inspired by Kim Dovey's approach to place, I look at the spatial program and the discursive constructions of place, and the ways its users experience it. First, in order to illuminate the conversion process, I research the official discourse regarding the conversion of Hagia Sophia and analyze the first displays of the monument as a mosque. I also examine the media coverage and reactions to the conversion from scholars, states, and communities. In this research, I conducted a fieldwork between October 2022 and March 2023 using the participant observation method. The fieldwork consisted of site visits at different times, particularly during prayers, and interviews with the visitors of Hagia Sophia. Based on my observations from the fieldwork and the perspectives of the interviewees, I try to explore the everyday life and experiences of this new place
Construction of normality in the gecekondu settlement: Experience of place, social pressure, and tactics
This article aims to interrogate the construction of normality with a view to a squatter metropolitan setting in Izmir, Turkey. In doing so, I focus on the everyday experiences of the inhabitants in Limontepe and frame them in the context of place-making. I read the concept of 'normal' through Bourdieu's notion of habitus and refer to women's micro-practices in drawing its contours. Women, living within the boundaries of normality use tactics to cope with the existing normal and related interventions to their bodies, movements, and thoughts. Ethnographic research is the key to understanding inhabitants' gendered experiences with space
