Get PDFAs a result of educational reforms implemented throughout Ibero-America in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, cabinet displays of natural history were considered key to the teaching of natural sciences. These old school cabinets have been transformed today into historical-patrimonial spaces that allow us to inquire about relations between science and education as well as approaches to reinterpreting nature from a scientific-pedagogic perspective. In this study, we emphasize the transformation from scientific space to heritage space by highlighting collections of taxidermy. At the same time, we identify some of the preservation efforts that have been carried out and reflect on their projections as matters of heritage.Los gabinetes escolares de Historia Natural eran considerados claves para la enseñanza de las ciencias naturales, de acuerdo a diversas propuestas educativas implementadas durante los siglos XIX y XX en Iberoamérica. Hoy en día, estos antiguos gabinetes se han transformado en espacios histórico-patrimoniales que nos permiten indagar sobre las relaciones entre la ciencia y la educación y las aproximaciones a esta naturaleza reinterpretada desde un enfoque científico-pedagógico. En este estudio, enfatizamos en los gabinetes de Historia Natural y sus transformaciones, de espacios científicos a espacios patrimoniales, destacando la importancia que tuvieron las colecciones de taxidermia como parte de los gabinetes de Historia Natural existentes tanto en Chile como en el contexto iberoamericano. A su vez, identificamos cuáles han sido algunos de los esfuerzos de preservación que se han llevado a cabo, reflexionando sobre sus proyecciones como patrimonio

Get PDFThe scientific article aims to analyze the evolution of the protection of economic, social, cultural and environmental rights (ESCER) at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and also evaluate the way to implement said protection at the national level as a mechanism of strengthening the welfare state in Latin America. As a research problem, the performance of the Inter-American Court in matters of ESCER can corroborate the strengthening of the Social Welfare State in Latin American countries. After exposing the Latin American scenario of socioeconomic inequalities and unfulfilled constitutional promises, we discuss the emergence of a Social Welfare State in the face of new challenges arising from the Covid-19 pandemic. Next, we investigate the evolution of the Inter-American Court's position on the justiciability of ESCER, with emphasis on the protection of the rights to health, social security, education and labor rights. Finally, the conventionality control technique is discussed as a tool to make ESCER effective in Latin American countries. The research undertaken is exploratory, with a deductive approach. As for procedures, the research is bibliographic and documentary.El presente artículo científico tiene como objetivo analizar la evolución de la protección de los derechos económicos, sociales, culturales y ambientales (DESCA) en el ámbito de la Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos, así como evaluar cómo implementar dicha protección a nivel nacional como un mecanismo para fortalecer el Estado de Bienestar Social en América Latina. Como problema de investigación, la pregunta es si la actuación de la Corte Interamericana en materia de DESCA puede corroborar el fortalecimiento del Estado de Bienestar Social en los países latinoamericanos. Luego de exponer el escenario latinoamericano de desigualdades socioeconómicas y promesas constitucionales incumplidas, discutimos el surgimiento de un Estado de Bienestar Social ante los nuevos desafíos derivados de la pandemia de Covid-19. A continuación, investigamos la evolución de la posición de la Corte Interamericana respecto de la justiciabilidad de los DESCA, destacando la protección de los derechos a la salud, la seguridad social, la educación y los derechos laborales. Finalmente, se discute la técnica de control de convencionalidad como herramienta para hacer efectivos los DESCA en los países latinoamericanos. Get PDFThe cultural phenomenon of greatest relevance in Chile, between the decades of the 60s to the 70s, was the New Chilean Song. More than a local version of the so-called “protest-song”, it was a formidable musical creation movement, resulting from the encounter between academia and oral tradition, led by young artists committed to their people and their time. As witnesses and spokespersons for social processes, they frequently included Christian symbols and references in their songs, something that might seem contradictory within a movement led by militants from the revolutionary left. This was possible due, on the one hand, to the imprint of popular faith in Chilean popular music, and on the other, to the encounter between Christians and Marxists, fostered in large part by the Liberation Theology movement. This article offers an unusual look at that historic cultural movement.La Nueva Canción Chilena fue un fenómeno cultural de gran relevancia en Chile entre los años sesenta y setenta del siglo XX. Más que una versión local de la llamada “canción-protesta”, fue un movimiento de creación musical, resultante del encuentro entre academia y tradición oral, protagonizado por jóvenes artistas comprometidos con su pueblo, testigos y voceros de los procesos sociales de su tiempo. El presente artículo estudia la Nueva Canción Chilena desde los símbolos y referentes cristianos reflejados en las canciones de estos artistas. Analizamos como, pese a parecer contradictorio dentro de un movimiento protagonizado por militantes de la izquierda revolucionaria, este fenómeno fue posible debido, por un lado, a la impronta de la fe popular en el folclor chileno, de la cual provenía dicho movimiento, y, por el otro, al encuentro entre cristianos y marxistas, propiciado por el movimiento de la teología de la Liberación.
 
Understanding underlying mechanisms in Nemaline Myopathy: the role of cardiolipin.
Get PDFMotivation: Nemaline myopathy (NM) is one of the most common forms of congenital myopathies, a group of heterogeneous genetic muscle disorders. The main characteristic of NM is the presence of inclusion bodies in muscle fibers, the so-called 'nemaline body' or rods. These rod-like inclusions are mostly composed of actin, alpha-actin, and other Z-band filaments. Actin Alpha 1 (ACTA1) and Nebulin (NEB) gene mutations are the main cause of NM. A recent study, employing dermal fibroblasts from individuals with NM mutations demonstrated that incorrect actin filament polymerization is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction; In addition, L-carnitine and linoleic acid, two mitochondrial-boosting compounds, enhanced actin filament polymerization and restore mitochondrial bioenergetics. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of these compounds are unknown. This study aims to bridge this gap by analyzing the effect of these compounds on cardiolipin (CL) concentrations, due to its significant role in the structure and the functioning of the mitochondria. Cardiolipin is a tetra-acylated diphosphatidylglycerol lipid that is predominantly localized in the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM).Methods: Four NM patients participated in this research, two patients with ACTA1 mutations and, two patients with NEB mutations. Variations in the expression of proteina involved in cardiolipin synthesis were analyzed by Western Blotting: cardiolipin synthase 1 (CLS1), which synthesized immature CL on the stromal side of the IMM and phospholipid-lysophospholipid transacylase Tafazzin (TAZ), which is involved in the remodeling phase to produce mature CL. Also, the concentration of cardiolipin in fibroblast was analyzed by fluorometric assay. Fibroblasts from two patients carrying one of these mutations were treated with L-carnitine and linoleic acid for a week.Results: Mutant fibroblasts derived from NM patients presented lower expression levels of TAZ protein. In addition, CL concentration was decreased in patients' fibroblasts compared to untreated fibroblasts and controls.Conclusions: Due to the mitochondrial dysfunction in mutant fibroblasts, cardiolipin is not maturing properly. Therefore, CL levels are decreased. The increased cardiolipin concentration by L-carnitine and linoleic acid treatment suggests that this may be one of the mechanisms of action by which these compounds improve mitochondrial function and actin polymerization
Isolation, study and characterization of novel antimicrobials drugs of natural origin.
Get PDFMotivation: Currently, there is great concern due to the increasing number of bacteria resistant to conventional antibiotics[1]. Here we try to identify new antimicrobial compounds produced by clones of a metagenomic library from the natural park of "Los Alcornocales". In previous screens, clones C12A, V1A,V2A and V3A, showed antimicrobial activity against Micrococcus luteus and Staphylococcus aureus. In this work we attempted to purify the active compound produced by these clones.Methods: The activity of cultures induced with arabinose and sodium salicylate [3], or filtered supernatants from these cultures, is assayed on a lawn of the target strains. After activity confirmation we proceed to fractionation with organic solvents and active fractions are subsequently analyzed by HPLC and NMR[2].Results: Antimicrobial activity against M.luteus has been observed in the filtered supernantant of strains C12A at concentration 10X and 20X. The results of the separation of organic fractions shows that the activity may be due to the presence of catechol[4]. The antibiotic activity of clones V1A, V2A and V3A against M. luteus and S. aureus has been confirmed. In the case of V3A, the activity is only detected when cultures are grown in the presence of the inducers arabinose and sodium salicylate [3]. In the case of clones V1A and V2A the highest activity is obtained in the absence of the inducers and correlates with the production of a compound that turns the culture blue. With respect to supernatants of liquid cultures, we were only able to detect activity against M luteus in filtered supernatants of V3A concentrated 10x.Conclusions: For C12A, the results suggest that the antimicrobial activity may be due to the presence of catechol in the filtered supernatant. In the case of clone V3A, we have obtained antimicrobial activity in the filtered supernatant of the cultures and we are currently scaling up the production condition for further fractionation. For clones V1A and V2A, we could detect detect antimicrobial activity when they are growing on the lawn of the target strain but filtered supernatants did not show activity. We are fine-tunning the culture conditions to obtain sufficient amount of the compound in the supernatants for further fractionation. The fact that the presence of antimicrobial activity correlates with the presence of a blue compound in the cultures suggests the possibility that such a compound is related to the activity
