Effectiveness of Combination Gel of Bilimbi Leaf and Aloe Vera Extract for Healing Burns in Male White Rats
Burns are a global public health problem, with approximately 180,000 deaths each year. The incidence of second-degree burns in Indonesia accounts for 46.7%. Redness, swelling, ulcers, and severe pain characterize these wounds. This study aims to test the effectiveness, percentage of healing, and length of gel application of a combination of star fruit leaf extract and aloe vera leaf pulp on the healing of second-degree burns in male rats. Morton's method was used in this study to measure the diameter of the burn wound. The treatments of this study included a combination gel of star fruit leaf extract and aloe vera leaf with variations in the ratio of F1 (6%: 5%), F2 (6%: 10%), F3 (12%: 5%), and the control group with 5 replicates each group. The results showed that the gel combination of extracts of star fruit leaves and aloe vera leaves effectively treated burn wounds in rats. Duncan's test of the treatment of variations in extract concentration showed a significant difference. The combination of starfruit leaf extract and aloe vera in gel preparation has effectively healed burns in male mice. The duration of administration is 16 days, with the percentage of healing for categories F1, F2, and F3 being 45%, 55%, and 61%, respectively. Burn wound healing activity occurs because the two extracts used contain alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins, which act as anti-inflammatories, increase the growth of epithelial cells and collagen, and help the formation of new tissues.Burns are a global public health problem, with approximately 180,000 deaths each year. The Effectiveness of Self-Hypnosis in Reducing Anxiety Levels in Cancer Patients
Chemotherapy becomes the primary treatment for cancer patients, but it causes various side effects and leads to anxiety. Many efforts have been made to address anxiety, one of which is self-hypnosis performed independently by the patient. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of self-hypnosis in reducing the anxiety levels of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. This study applied a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. A total of 40 cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at Persahabatan Hospital were selected using purposive sampling. The intervention was self-hypnosis, administered for three consecutive days. Anxiety levels were measured using the HARS scale before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis, including normality testing and the dependent t-test. The results show that in the intervention group, there was an average decrease of 10.83 from 31.78 to 20.95. The results of the dependent T-test showed a p-value of 0.015; there is a significant difference in the average anxiety levels before and after the intervention. The implications of this study on healthcare are to enhance the role of nurses in providing independent nursing care. Nurses can better understand the adaptation processes that occur in cancer patients, where patients must undergo a long series of treatments, thus having to adapt from their previous environment, where they could move freely, to a limited one due to declining physical conditions and dependence on healthcare services to improve their health. Relaxation through self-hypnosis can restore patients' motivation to recover and become more optimistic about undergoing treatment
Longitudinal Changes in Health-Related Quality of Life Among Older Adults Undergoing Hemodialysis
Chronic kidney disease is a significant public health problem worldwide. Hemodialysis is the most common form of kidney replacement therapy in the world. Hemodialysis therapy is associated with deterioration in health-related quality of life. However, limited studies focused on health-related quality of life subscales among older persons with hemodialysis in the Indonesian population, especially with long-term follow-up. This study aims to explore the six-month longitudinal changes in health-related quality of life subscales among older persons with hemodialysis. This prospective cohort study evaluated 119 older adults undergoing hemodialysis using purposive sampling between March and September 2024 at PKU Yogyakarta Hospital, Indonesia. Outcomes status was evaluated with health-related quality of life at 1-, 3-, and 6-months. The Indonesian version of SF-36 assessed health-related quality of life. Data were analyzed using general estimating equations. In general, the health-related quality of life among older persons with hemodialysis was decreased. The longitudinal changes of eight subscales significantly deteriorated from the first month to the third month and remained consistently worse during the third to the sixth months (p=.001, respectively). Most deterioration was found in role limitation due to physical problem (β=-94.4; p=.001), general health (β=-70.5; p=.001), and vitality (β=-66.9; p=.001). Social function showed the better domain during the 6 months (β=-36.6; p=.001) than other health-related quality of life subscales. Different aspects of health-related quality of life deteriorate differently among older persons with hemodialysis. Specific attention needs to be paid to high-risk Indonesians among older persons with hemodialysis health-related quality of life, especially those who are older
The Effect of Oxytocin and Marmet Massage on Exclusive Breastfeeding: A Continuity of Care Case Study
Continuity of care (COC) represents comprehensive midwifery services throughout pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, and family planning. The perinatal period, spanning from conception to 12 months postpartum, is associated with a higher probability of health complications. A fundamental strategy to decrease the maternal mortality rate is to alleviate the labor pain experienced by women, as almost one-fifth of all maternal deaths occur more than six weeks post-delivery. Midwife-led continuity of care diminishes women's apprehension around labor and postpartum depression, while simultaneously promoting exclusive breastfeeding. The objective is to deliver uninterrupted midwifery care to moms by employing Oxytocin Massage and Marmet Massage during the postpartum phase. This is a case study using qualitative analysis involving three pregnant women in the third trimester who received continuous midwifery care throughout pregnancy, labor, the immediate postpartum period, and family planning from October 2023 to February 2024. Qualitative data analysis was conducted thoroughly and persistently till finalization. The administration of oxytocin massage and the Marmet technique to mothers following observational assessments resulted in an augmentation of breast milk production volume, consistent with previous literature and demonstrating alignment between theory and practice. The midwifery profession aspires to advance sustainable midwifery care grounded in existing evidence and to adopt sustainable therapeutic practices alongside complementary interventions
Effectiveness of Intervention Programs Addressing Work-Family Conflict Among Working Mothers: A Systematic Review
Work-family Conflict (WFC) is a significant issue for working mothers, affecting their well-being and family dynamics. This review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of various interventions to reduce WFC. This study using a systematic review was conducted with the PICO framework. Studies were selected based on criteria including working mothers with children (infancy to school age), full-text availability, English language, and publications from 2014 to 2024. The risk of bias was assessed using the JBI Critical Appraisal Tools, and the results were synthesized through a narrative synthesis. Out of 258 articles screened, 5 studies met the inclusion criteria. The review found that interventions such as Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), time management training, multimedia education, resilience training, stress management, and self-reflection effectively reduced work-family conflict (WFC), thereby improving both mental health and work-family balance. The main limitation of this review is the small number of included studies and variability in methodologies. Future research should focus on integrating diverse interventions and exploring long-term effects. The findings highlight the role of Occupational Health Nurses (OHNs) in supporting working mothers in managing work-family conflict (WFC).Work-family Conflict (WFC) is a significant issue for working mothers, affecting their well-being and family dynamics. Analysis of Lavandula angustifolia Aromatherapy Relaxation on Stress Levels and Sleep Quality in Kidney Failure Patients
Kidney failure is a condition in which the kidneys are unable to perform essential functions, including filtering waste products, regulating fluid and electrolyte balance, and producing hormones. This study aimed to analyze the effects of relaxation combined with Lavandula angustifolia aromatherapy on stress levels and sleep quality in patients with kidney failure. A quantitative experimental design with a pre-test and post-test control group was employed, involving 30 respondents selected through simple random sampling. Stress levels were measured using the DASS-21, and sleep quality using the PSQI. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test and the independent t-test, depending on the distribution of the data. Before the intervention, the mean stress score was 18.47±4.21 in the control group and 17.93±4.10 in the intervention group. After the intervention, the intervention group showed a significant stress reduction (mean 11.20±3.45) compared to the control group (17.40±3.98), as assessed by a Mann-Whitney U test (p=0.0046). Sleep quality also improved significantly, with pre-intervention PSQI scores of 12.33±2.14 (control) and 11.87±2.08 (intervention), and post-intervention scores of 8.20±1.96 (intervention) versus 12.07±2.11 (control), supported by a p=0.0004. The findings demonstrate that Lavandula angustifolia aromatherapy relaxation effectively reduces stress and improves sleep quality in patients with kidney failure. Lavender aromatherapy may serve as a safe, simple, and complementary non-pharmacological therapy to support clinical management in this population
Kidney Weight: The Pre-Clinical Analysis on the Influence of Probiotic Supplementation in Malnutrition
A study showed malnutrition, encompassing both obesity and undernutrition, is a serious metabolic condition that leads to health complications, including kidney injury. Probiotics have been proposed as a potential adjuvant therapy to improve compensatory kidney function. However, research on the effects of probiotic intervention on kidney morphological changes across different nutritional statuses remains limited. This exploratory pilot study involved 24 male isogenic Sprague Dawley rats (n=24; 7-8 weeks old), which were divided into six groups (n=4): undernourished (KU), undernourished-probiotics (KU-P), normal (KN), normal-probiotics (KN-P), obese (KO), and obese-probiotics (KO-P). The rats underwent a 10-day dietary period, followed by a 44-day treatment period, and were terminated on day 45. The kidneys were then extracted and weighed using an analytical scale. Kidney weight data were analyzed using a non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by post hoc Dwass-Steel-Critchlow-Fligner (DSCF) tests. Findings revealed a significant difference in kidney weight among the groups (p=0.001), with a substantial effect size. Descriptive trends showed that the obese (KO) group had the highest kidney weights, while the undernourished (KU) group had the lowest. The normal-probiotic group (KN-P) showed a trend toward increased kidney weight compared with the undernourished group (KU); however, conservative pairwise comparisons did not reach statistical significance (p>0.05) due to the limited sample size. Nutritional status is the primary factor influencing kidney weight. While probiotics demonstrated a corrective effect on kidney morphology in the normal group, their supplementation efficacy requires further evaluation, particularly in undernourished and obese conditions
