    Search for new physics in top quark production in dilepton final states in proton-proton collisions at √s=13 TeV

    PubMed: 31764915A search for new physics in top quark production is performed in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1) collected in 2016 with the CMS detector. Events with two opposite-sign isolated leptons (electrons or muons), and b quark jets in the final state are selected. The search is sensitive to new physics in top quark pair production and in single top quark production in association with a W boson. No significant deviation from the standard model expectation is observed. Results are interpreted in the framework of effective field theory and constraints on the relevant effective couplings are set, one at a time, using a dedicated multivariate analysis. This analysis differs from previous searches for new physics in the top quark sector by explicitly separating tW from t (t) over bar events and exploiting the specific sensitivity of the tW process to new physics

    An embedding technique to determine ττ backgrounds in proton-proton collision data

    An embedding technique is presented to estimate standard model tau tau backgrounds from data with minimal simulation input. In the data, the muons are removed from reconstructed mu mu events and replaced with simulated tau leptons with the same kinematic properties. In this way, a set of hybrid events is obtained that does not rely on simulation except for the decay of the tau leptons. The challenges in describing the underlying event or the production of associated jets in the simulation are avoided. The technique described in this paper was developed for CMS. Its validation and the inherent uncertainties are also discussed. The demonstration of the performance of the technique is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions collected by CMS in 2017 at root s = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 41.5 fb(-1)

    Image based localization using semantic segmentation for autonomous driving

    27th Signal Processing and Communications Applications Conference, SIU 2019 -- 24 April 2019 through 26 April 2019One of the research topics that maintains its popularity in the field of Computer Vision is place recognition and localization for autonomous vehicles. It is a known fact that GPS systems used for localizing vehicle cannot be activated in some cases and this inability has accelerated image based positioning studies. In our study, we performed image based localization using dataset that includes Malaga city center images. Firstly, a semantic descriptor is obtained as a result of semantic segmentation and localization was performed using the approximate nearest neighbor search. After that, success of this method was compared with the success of the local descriptor based method which is frequently used in the literature. Furthermore, a hybrid method obtained by combining these two methods is proposed. The superiority of the proposed hybrid image-based localization method, and hereby contribution of the semantic descriptor is demonstrated by experimental results. © 2019 IEEE.Bilgisayarlı Görü alanındaki popülerliğini koruyan araştırma konularından birisi insansız araçlarda yer tespiti ve konumlandırmadır. Araçların konumlandırılmasında kullanılan GPS sistemlerinin bazı durumlarda faal olamadığı bilinen bir gerçektir ve bu yetersizlik imge tabanlı konumlandırma çalışmalarına hız vermiştir. Bizim çalışmamızda, araç içinden elde edilmiş Malaga şehir merkezi görüntülerinden oluşan bir veri tabanı kullanılarak imge tabanlı konumlandırma yapılmıştır. İlk olarak, anlamsal (semantik) bölütleme sonucunda elde edilen bir anlamsal betimleyici oluşturulmuş ve yaklaşık en yakın komşuluk araması tekniği de kullanılarak bir konumlandırma yapılmıştır. Ardından bu yöntemin başarısı, literatürde sıkça kullanılan yerel betimleyici tabanlı yöntemin başarısıyla kıyaslanmıştır. Ayrıca, bu iki yöntemin birleştirilmesi ile elde edilen melez bir yöntem önerilmiştir. Önerilen melez imge-tabanlı konumlandırmanın, sadece yerel betimleyici ve sadece anlamsal betimleyici kullanan yöntemden daha başarılı olduğu, dolayısıyla yerel betimleyici tabanlı yöntemlerin anlamsal betimleyiciler ile desteklenmesinin başarıyı artırdığı, deneysel sonuçlarla gösterilmiştir

The Industrial Revolution and its consequences naturally had great effects on the cities. As the structure of the cities gradually turned into a production-oriented state, the population especially in the main European cities started to increase rapidly. With the effect of all these, a new spatial organizations emerged for the upper income group. The effects of this period were observed in the Ottoman Empire, too. The empire was open to the innovations with the declaration of the Tanzimat Edict. Naturally, cities have been directly affected by the new reforms and policies. Therefore, a transformation process has started in the Ottoman city structure. Izmir and Chios were important port cities for Western Anatolia. Especially Izmir became the most important port city after Istanbul with the construction of the railway. Although Chios has lost its importance after the rise of Izmir, it has remained an important stopping point. The general purpose of this thesis is to examine the suburban characteristics of the selected areas Buca, Bornova and Kampos while looking at the urban pattern of Izmir and Chios in 19th century.19. yüzyıldaki gelişmelerden sonra şehir yapısı dünya genelinde bir değişime uğradı. Bu dönemde yaşanan sanayi devrimi kentleri büyük ölçüde etkiledi. Şehirlerdeki kurgunun giderek üretim odaklı bir hale dönüşmesiyle başlıca Avrupa şehirlerinde nüfus hızla artmaya başladı. Zaman geçtikçe altyapı problemleri, salgın hastalıklar, güvenlik sorunları gibi sorunlar ortaya çıkmaya başladı ve giderek büyüyen şehirler her kesimin ihtiyacını karşılayamaz konuma geldi. Tüm bunların da etkisiyle, öncelikle İngiltere'de olmak üzere üst gelir grubunun yaşamayı arzuladığı bir şehir dışı mekan organizasyonu ortaya çıktı. Şehir merkezinin dışında ve ideal yaşam koşullarının sağlandığı bu yerleşimler banliyö olarak adlandırıldı. Banliyö kavramı, antik çağlardan beri var olsa da modern anlamını bu dönemde kazandı. Bu tezin genel amacı, İzmir ve Sakız Adası'nın 19. yüzyıldaki şehir dokusuna bakarken buraların banliyöleri olarak kabul edilen yerleşimlerin karakterlerini sorgulamak ve incelemektir. Çalışma sahası olarak İzmir’den Buca ve Bornova, Sakız Adası’ndan ise Kampos seçilmiştir. İzmir’den iki yerleşim seçilmesinin nedeni, o dönemde özellikle demiryolu bağlantıları sayesinde öne çıkan Buca ve Bornova arasında genel anlamda çok belirgin farklar olmamasıdır. Konut tipolojisi konusunda bazı konularda ayrışsalar da kentsel dokuları genel olarak benzerdir. Sakız Adası’ndan seçilen tek yerleşimin Kampos olmasının nedeni ise buranın kendine has bir kentsel ve mimari dokuyla adanın genelinden ayrışmasıdır. Ayrıca, literatürde Cenevizliler döneminden beri adanın banliyösü olarak yer alan tek yerleşim burasıdır. Bu çalışmada, yerleşimler kendi özelinde ele alınarak 1834-1860 yılları arasındaki ait kentsel doku izleri ile 1860-1910 arasındaki dokuları karşılaştırılmış ve gelişimleri saptanmıştır

    Search for heavy resonances decaying into two Higgs bosons or into a Higgs boson and a W or Z boson in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV

    A search is presented for massive narrow resonances decaying either into two Higgs bosons, or into a Higgs boson and a W or Z boson. The decay channels considered are HHbb+- and VHqq-, where H denotes the Higgs boson, and V denotes the W or Z boson. This analysis is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the CMS Collaboration, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). For the TeV-scale mass resonances considered, substructure techniques provide ways to differentiate among the hadronization products from vector boson decays to quarks, Higgs boson decays to bottom quarks, and quark- or gluon-induced jets. Reconstruction techniques are used that have been specifically optimized to select events in which the tau lepton pair is highly boosted. The observed data are consistent with standard model expectations and upper limits are set at 95% confidence level on the product of cross section and branching fraction for resonance masses between 0.9 and 4.0 TeV. Exclusion limits are set in the context of bulk radion and graviton models:spin-0 radion resonances are excluded below a mass of 2.7 TeV at 95% confidence level. In the spin-1 heavy vector triplet framework, mass-degenerate W and Z resonances with dominant couplings to the standard model gauge bosons are excluded below a mass of 2.8 TeV at 95% confidence level. These are the first limits for massive resonances at the TeV scale with these decay channels at 13 TeV

Because of the complex structure of design, design education is also difficult to frame. In the period of architectural design education, first year is the special term that students not only challenge with the complexity of design and learning design, they also experience difficulties because of the changed learning habits, education methods and lack of skill and knowledge on design. Therefore, this descriptive study focused on Introductory Design Studios in Architecture Faculty of IZTECH in order to understand how the beginner design students respond to learning design exercises in this challenging period. Under the title of the main research question, the design processes of the students according to the simple and complex assignments were analyzed, their responses were evaluated in accordance with the assignment goals, the results were discussed and compared. In the data gathering process, AR101 Introduction to Design, fall 2016-2017 studio was directly observed in the natural studio environment during the semester. Among the students, a focus group were set up in order to follow their design processes closely and five students were chosen for the case study from the focus group. In addition to the research tools, questionnaires and interviews were conducted with both students and instructors. The results of this study reveal the differences between responses of the beginner design students to the assignments, the changes in the responses according to the simplicity and complexity of the assignments and the influential factors in their design processes and design learning.Tasarım, sürecinde birçok parametre barındıran, bilişsel bir aktivitedir. Bu kompleks yapısı sebebiyle, tasarım eğitimini de oluşturması ve şekillendirmesi zordur. Mimarî tasarım eğitimi döneminde, ilk yıl özel bir dönemdir ve öğrenciler sadece tasarımın ve tasarlamayı öğrenmenin karmaşıklığı ile mücadele etmez, aynı zamanda değişen eğitim alışkanlıkları, eğitim metotları, tasarım bilgi ve becerilerindeki azlık sebebiyle de zorluk yaşarlar. Bu sebeple, bu betimleyici araştırma, acemi tasarım öğrencilerinin tasarımı öğrenme alıştırmalarına nasıl cevap verdiğini anlamak amacıyla IYTE Mimarlık Fakültesi’ndeki Tasarıma Giriş Stüdyosu’na odaklandı. Bu temel araştırma sorusunun altında, öğrencilerin basit ve karmaşık ödevlere göre tasarım süreçleri incelendi, ödevlere verdikleri cevaplar ödevin amaçları doğrultusunda değerlendirildi, sonuçlar tartışıldı ve karşılaştırıldı. Veri toplama sürecinde, AR101 Tasarıma Giriş, 2016-2017 Sonbahar Dönemi Stüdyo’su dönem boyunca doğal stüdyo ortamında gözlemlendi. Tasarım sürecini daha yakın takip edebilmek için öğrenciler arasından bir odak grup oluşturuldu ve beş öğrenci örnek olay incelemesi için odak gruptan seçildi. Bu araştırma yöntemlerine ek olarak, öğrenciler ve eğitimcilerle anketler ve röportajlar da yapıldı.     Search for t t ¯ H production in the H → b b ¯ decay channel with leptonic t t ¯ decays in proton-proton collisions at √s=13 TeV

    A search is presented for the associated production of a standard model Higgs boson with a top quark-antiquark pair (t t ¯ H), in which the Higgs boson decays into a b quark-antiquark pair, in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy s=13 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb ?1 recorded with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. Candidate t t ¯ H events are selected that contain either one or two electrons or muons from the t t ¯ decays and are categorised according to the number of jets. Multivariate techniques are employed to further classify the events and eventually discriminate between signal and background. The results are characterised by an observed t t ¯ H signal strength relative to the standard model cross section, ? = ?/? SM , under the assumption of a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV. A combined fit of multivariate discriminant distributions in all categories results in an observed (expected) upper limit on ? of 1.5 (0.9) at 95% confidence level, and a best fit value of 0.72 ± 0.24(stat) ± 0.38(syst), corresponding to an observed (expected) signal significance of 1.6 (2.2) standard deviations above the background-only hypothesis.[Figure not available: see fulltext.]. © 2019, The Author(s)

    Measurement of anisotropic flow in XeXe collisions at 5.44 TeV with the CMS experiment

    New measurements of anisotropic flow in XeXe collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 5.44 TeV per nucleon pair, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, are presented. The v(2), v(3) and v(4) Fourier coefficients of the anisotropic azimuthal distribution are obtained employing three different analysis techniques: two-particle correlations, the scalar product method, and multiparticle cumulants, which have different sensitivities to non-flow and flow fluctuation effects. The results are shown as a function of transverse momentum (P-T) for various centrality selections, and compared with corresponding results from PbPb collisions. These new measurements in a smaller nucleus-nucleus system than PbPb provide additional insights into the system-size dependence of the collective flow induced by the dominant collision geometry and its fluctuations. In particular, these results, compared to theoretical predictions and Monte Carlo generators, will provide important details on the system size dependence of the medium response in heavy ion collisions. They also offer a unique opportunity to study the onset of flow from small to large systems

    Automated segmentation of cells in phase contrast optical microscopy time series images

Segmentation of cells from time series data acquired with this technique is a labor-intensive and time-consuming task that cell biology researchers need solution for. In this study traditional image processing and deep learning based approaches for automated cell segmentation from phase contrast optical microscopy time series are presented, and their performances are evaluated against manually annotated datasets. © 2019 IEEE.Faz kontrast optik mikroskopi hücrelerin canlı ortamlarında zamana bağlı incelenmesi için tercih edilen görüntüleme yöntemidir.     Featured event sequence graphs for model-based incremental testing of software product lines

To assure quality of software products from SPLs, products need to be tested systematically. However, testing every product variant in isolation is generally not feasible for large number of product variants. An approach to deal with this issue is to use incremental testing, where test artifacts that are developed for one product are reused for another product which can be obtained by incrementally adding features to the prior product. We propose a novel model-based test generation approach for products developed using SPL that follows incremental testing paradigm. First, we introduce Featured Event Sequence Graphs (FESGs), an extension of ESGs, that provide necessary definitions and operations to support commonalities and variabilities in SPLs with respect to test models. Then we propose a test generation technique for the product variants of an SPL, which starts from any product. The proposed technique with FESGs avoids redundant test generation for each product from SPL. We compare our technique with in-isolation testing approach by a case study
