A hub-and-spoke network design for relocating emergency service vehicles
Relocation involves the repositioning of idle Emergency Service (ES) vehicles among stations in order to reduce the response time. It is well-known in the literature that relocating idle vehicles provides better coverage in the network, which in turn reduces the response time to the next call. In classical emergency service networks, idle vehicles can be relocated between any two stations. This can cause long delays and increase the response times. In this study, we proposed for the first time a hub-and-spoke network to efficiently realize the relocation of idle vehicles. The proposed hub-and-spoke structure consolidates relocations among hubs, while hub-spoke relocations are implemented as needed. Such a structure helps to better organize the simultaneous movements of ES vehicles for relocation. We have developed a mathematical model to maximize the expected safely covered population. The model provides both the hub-spoke topology and the relocation plan (a compliance table), which shows the desired stations of idle vehicles depending on the system state. In the literature, the relocation plan does not show the relocation paths (movements) of the vehicles. We have presented an exact algorithm that computes the relocation paths for all possible call cases and system levels in advance. This helps the dispatcher to manage the system effectively. We performed a detailed simulation study for ES vehicles of a natural gas distributor to demonstrate the real-life suitability of the proposed system. Compared to the classical relocation network structure, the proposed system has improved the response time, relocation time, and travel time especially when the system is busy. © 2024 Elsevier Lt
Psychological resilience and valued living in difficult times: mixed method research in cultural context
Valued living involves aligning one's actions with one's personal values, which can contribute to mental strength and psychological resilience. The present study aimed to examine the importance of living a valued life in maintaining mental strength, particularly during challenging times. In addition, it identifies the culturally relevant values that strengthen adults. Our study used both quantitative and qualitative methods. In the quantitative phase, 493 adults completed the following scales Valued Living Questionnaire (VLQ), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale Short Form (CD-RISC-10), and Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21). We calculated Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient and used structural equation modeling (SEM) to conduct the path analysis. For the qualitative phase, we recruited 15 participants from a larger quantitative sample based on their scores obtained on administered scales and conducted in-depth interviews along with researcher's journal and memos. Based on our quantitative findings, this study indicates that the concept of valued living serves as a mediating factor between psychological resilience and mental health outcomes. In our qualitative analysis, we identified certain values (e.g., acceptance, love, and goodwill) that serve to empower adults during challenging periods. The findings of this study are deemed to serve as a reference for the formulation and implementation of interventions intended to strengthen psychological resilience, from the viewpoints of both mental health specialists and psychological counselors

The synergistic power of rosehip seed powder and aluminum chloride in steel industry wastewater treatment
This study investigates the efficiency of a hybrid coagulation–flocculation process for the treatment of industrial wastewater from the steel industry. The novel method combines a natural coagulant, processed Rosehip Seed Powder (RSP), with a chemical coagulant, aluminum chloride (AlCl3), across varying concentrations and pH levels. The study simulated the pH 8 conditions of iron and steel industrial wastewater and examined the removal of heavy metals, total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and ammonia–nitrogen (NH3-N). At pH 8, the optimal coagulant dosage was determined to be 0.75:0.75 (g/g) of RSP/AlCl3 powder, resulting in high removal efficiencies across several parameters: 88.29% for COD, 91.85% for color, 99% for TSS, 93.11% for NH3-N, 94.3% for Mn, 98.5% for Fe, 96.7% for Zn, and 99.3% for Ni. The pH optimization demonstrated high removal efficiencies without pH adjudication. The removal of heavy metals at pH 8 demonstrated high efficiencies, with Mn, Fe, Zn, and Al achieving 99.00%, 90.6%, 95.73%, and 92.3%, respectively. These results suggest that no pH adjustment is required when using RSP/AlCl3 for the treatment of iron and steel industry wastewater through the coagulation method. © 2024 by the authors
Comparison of adolescent and parental perception of health-related quality of life of adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis
Purpose: Evaluation of the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of individuals with idiopathic scoliosis (IS) is important because of the physical and psychosocial problems caused by IS. In general, children interact closely with their parents and are thus influenced by their parents’ opinions. It is thus useful to examine adolescent and parental perceptions of the adolescent’s HRQoL for the rehabilitation of individuals with IS. Methods: This study compared the adolescents’ and their parents’ perceptions of the adolescent’s HRQoL including 65 individuals with IS (10–18 years). It was used the pediatric quality of life inventory (PedsQL) to assess the adolescents’ HRQoL and to examine the domains of physical health, emotional functioning, social functioning, school functioning, and psychosocial health. Results: The results showed that the scores of the adolescents were higher than their parents’ in social functioning. Scores of social functioning and HRQoL were higher in girls than in their parents. Conclusion: This discrepancy between the adolescents and their parents may have a negative effect on their rehabilitation, healthy social integration, and adaptation of individuals with IS. Shedding light on the reasons for this discrepancy would be beneficial for raising the awareness of parents with children with IS about this issue

Salivary alpha amylase enzyme as a stress parameter: Establishment and comparison of laboratory methods
Aim: Salivary alpha ( alpha )-amylase enzyme is a biomarker used to measure sympathetic nervous system activity. This study aimed to establish three existing methods for measuring salivary alpha- amylase enzyme activity in the laboratory and to compare these methods in terms of their usability. Materials and Methods: alpha- amylase enzyme activity can be measured in ready-made kits by three methods: Starch-Iodine, 2-chloro-4-nitrophenyl maltotrioside (CNPG3) and dinitrosalicylic acid (DNS) methods. In this context, standard curves were created in the laboratory for manual study of these methods and their advantages and disadvantages were presented. The usability of these methods was tested. Results: The starch-iodine and CNPG3 methods were successfully established. However, although a standard curve was successfully established for the DNS method, this assay was not suitable for the studies as the samples were not readable and had many disadvantages. The test sensitivities and working ranges were appropriate for the starch-iodine and CNPG3 tests, requiring 4,000-fold dilution for the starch-iodine test and 5-fold dilution for the CNPG3 test. A weak but statistically significant positive correlation was observed between the two tests (R2=0.048 for linear regression; p<0.05, R2=0.106 for quadratic regression; p<0.01). Conclusion: The CNPG3 and starch-iodine methods were feasible, cost-effective, accessible, and time-efficient. The starch-iodine method is a cheaper but the CNPG3 method is also a practical test with fewer steps. In this respect, it has been decided that the CNPG3 method is the most effective method in studies based on salivary alpha- amylase enzyme method

These applications depend on the quality of the image obtained. Illumination enhancement is required for all the applications which are using digital images in some part, to make them work properly, also assessment of the illumination quality is, as important as the illumination enhancement for comparing images and having an idea about the proposed output of the academic research results in the field of digital image processing. Illumination problems has become a demanding matter in various applications of digital image processing. A relevant argument in the field of illumination enhancement is lack of a quantitative measurement method to assess the illumination of an image. A quantitative measurement that is demonstrating the illumination case (contrast level, brightness etc.) of an image is proposed. Proposed new approach in this thesis, appropriates the input image's estimated Gaussian distribution and the Kullback-Leibler Divergence of the estimated Gaussian distribution and the expected Gaussian distribution for measurement and the calculations. In the results part, the experimental works show the influence and the accuracy of the proposed approach for the assessment of image illumination quality
Design-based digital story program: Enhancing coding and computational thinking skills in early childhood education
The domain of early childhood education has witnessed an increasing emphasis on developing coding and computational thinking (CT) abilities. Scholarly investigations have delved into appropriate approaches for enhancing these proficiencies within early childhood classrooms. The present study aims to investigate the impact of a digital story design program, or Design-Based Digital Story Program (DBDS), on the coding and CT skills of 5-year-old children. Specifically designed for children aged 3–6, the DBDS program aligns with constructivism principles, which promote experiential learning. Employing a case–control quasi-experimental design, the study employed pre-intervention and post-intervention assessments and a follow-up retest after one month. The intervention involved implementing the digital story design program over 11 weeks, with three sessions per week, each lasting between 60 to 90 min, targeting five-year-old participants. The findings reveal that the DBDS program significantly enhances CT and coding skills compared to a control group. Moreover, female participants exhibited more significant improvements in CT skills post-intervention than their male counterparts, while no significant gender-based effects were observed in coding skills. These findings suggest that the DBDS program effectively supports the cultivation of coding and CT abilities among young children, warranting further exploration in diverse educational settings and across various grade levels. © The Author(s) 2024
