    Graham Greene as Publisher

    Get PDF
The account of Graham Greene telling Max Reinhardt that he missed publishing and was looking for something to do after he had written his five hundred words a day is deeply entrenched. But there is more to the story. Like most writers, Greene wanted a publisher who would do what he said, and perhaps this was what he thought he would find when he eventually accepted Ian Parsons’s offer of a literary editorship. “Graham Greene as Publisher” traces Greene’s journey through the publishing world from 1926, when he followed his five hundred words a day sorting grammar, redundancies, and clichés at The Times, through 1987 when—having worn many different hats during his years a full-blown publisher—he was touted for his part in the protest against the commercial pressures on editors and authors based on the principle that the author should call the tune

    [1] FriendIndeed Branding

    No full text
A few months ago, my dog ate a chocolate chip cookie. My dog is 8 years old, and he is not small, but I was concerned. I did some googling, but it was impossible to find an answer about whether he would be okay or not. One source said he was fine, another said it was an emergency and I should contact a veterinarian. I couldn’t call the vet, as it was 9 pm. I found out that the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) has a poison control phone number, and thought this was my saving grace. I called them, but soon found out that they needed a credit card number to proceed, and that the fee was $75. I thought, how is that fair? I’m just trying to find out if my dog is going to survive eating a chocolate chip cookie. After an hour of searching the web for something to help me, I found out that Chewy.com has a free vet resource for people who use their autoship feature, and fortunately I do. Luckily enough, they were available for another hour. I was able to talk to a vet and he said that my dog would be fine. I may have overreacted, but my dog is my best friend, and after 8 years of keeping him alive, I thought, could this be it? That is not a fun thought to have. That’s the main reason why I created FriendIndeed. It’s a platform for any and all information a person could need, always available and always free. All I needed was a simple chart to tell me how much chocolate would hurt a dog of his size. There were a lot of sites that had confusing or contradicting information, and FriendIndeed would be a way to counteract the confusion. The site isn’t only for pets, though. Throughout my life, I have found a stray kitten in my backyard, a random bunny’s nest in the ground, and a nest of baby birds in my garage. Luckily, my mom was a veterinarian’s assistant, and knew how to handle these situations, but not everyone has a veterinarian in their life that they can rely on. Also, taking these animals to a vet when it might not be necessary can cost a lot. FriendIndeed has answers to common questions that might arise, including whether or not you should take them to seek care. FriendIndeed’s goal is to provide information about animals for free, so that everyone can be informed, and to possibly help save an animal’s life.https://digitalcommons.northgeorgia.edu/seniorexhibitfall2021/1004/thumbnail.jp

3I: Environment Based Education and Environmental Literacy: Instructional Strategies to Improving the Employability Skills of High School Students

    No full text
The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine which combination of independent variables would have the greatest effect on high school students’ perceived importance of employability skills. A second was to determine which combination of independent variables, would have the greatest effect on the students’ recognition of their own employability skills. A third was to test for a relationship between students’ perceived importance of employability skills and the recognition of those skills in themselves. Experimental Group A (37 students) combined the strategies of natural and human systems with inquiry and decision-making skills, two components of environmental literacy, to complete a group project. Experimental Group B (38 students) combined action skills with personal responsibility, the remaining two components of environmental literacy, to complete a different group project. There were no control groups. In this pre-test/post-test design (N = 75), an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to analyze the pre and post-test results in order to answer the first two research questions. A Pearson Correlation was used to answer the third research question. Findings are currently being tabulated. Keywords: employability skills, high school, environmental literacy, environmental-based education

3I: The Importance of Explicit Instruction in Literacy Strategies in History Classes: An Examination of Student Performance and Motivations

    No full text
The present quasi-experimental study investigated the effects of explicit instruction of historical literacy strategies in eighth grade history classes including measuring content knowledge, critical thinking skills, and changes in motivation to learn history content. Participants (N = 63) were tasked with completing three pre-assessments and three post assessments in their history classes in order to measure the effect of explicit instruction in historical literacy strategies. One assessment measured content knowledge of history content, one measured critical thinking skills, and the other measured motivations for learning history content. Two main assignments centered around critical thinking skills were implemented with the use of scaffolding and modeling. Explicit instruction of historical literacy strategies was used with an experimental group while traditional instruction was used with a control group. The study aimed to investigate if a significant difference exists in the students’ levels of content knowledge after using explicit instruction in historical literacy strategies while also investigating a change in critical thinking skills and motivation to learn history content. This study was conducted because there is not much literature to support the argument for or against using historical literacy strategies in a history classroom. This study was significant because it showed that by using historical literacy strategies, critical thinking skills, and historical perspective-taking, students could improve in these skills and could create a deeper understanding of history content. Keywords: historical literacy, content knowledge, literacy strategies, middle school, eighth grade, social studie

3L: Consumerism in Russia: An Intercultural Perspective

    No full text
The presentation aims to report on the findings of an undergraduate research project conducted under UNG’s FUSE program in summer of 2020. The purpose of our project was two-fold: first, to actively engage in academic research on an aspect of the Russian culture through the lenses of the Intercultural Competence (ICC) framework; second, to address the problem of a lack of up-to-date authentic teaching materials at the UNG Russian program. Our research question was to what extent consumerism and capitalism affect Russian people on a day to day basis as well at the macroeconomic level. The prior scholarly research concerning Russian consumerism and capitalism demonstrated that since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, consumerism and capitalism have become much more prevalent in Russian society and the minds of its people. This influences how Russians allocate spending with increasing funds devoted to non-essential goods and services. We interviewed native speakers of Russian in the target language to acquire first-hand perspectives on consumerist habits in modern Russia and compare them with the existing knowledge on the matter in the American society. The data obtained from the interviews confirmed that Russian people are moving toward a society where consumerism is widely accepted due to the influences of globalism and capitalism. The presentation will outline the structure and methodology, major findings drawn from the interviews, and a reflection on the outcomes of the project as pertained to the Intercultural Competence Framework

1G: Smarter Coaching to Adapt to Basketball\u27s New Analytical Landscape

    No full text
For many years now, businesses and marketing companies have lived and died by, based their entire trajectories on, and believed in the analytics that they produce. It\u27s unfathomable to imagine a company that does not believe in basing decisions off analytics. If people click on links to continue shopping for lampshades, then links for lampshades become more accessible. Maybe the CEO did not have a long term plan to implement more lampshade links, but he would be looked at as a fool for not trying to maximize what people are gravitated toward. Now apply that same theory to a larger business, basketball. The NBA alone has employees worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and each organization flirts with being worth one billion dollars. As numbers take over modern business, there is a slower, but nonetheless growing trend in basketball. This paper will discuss how analytics go much deeper in the basketball world now more than ever, as a focus on being numerically sound has changed the formula for coaching, team assembly, and even personal player development. Furthermore, this paper will justify the trickle-down effect (Goldsberry) from analytics at the professional level to youth levels, and why the inclusion of analytics in younger basketball leagues throughout the United States will be a net positive for the sport. With this, the comparison of success in analytics in Europe will show how the United States is falling behind in how basketball is coached, and what they can do to recover

    11. Access to Urban Greenspace: a preliminary analysis of the Hispanic population’s accessibility to urban greenspace in Hall County, Georgia

    No full text
Research question: Does the Hispanic population in Gainesville, Georgia have the same access to urban greenspace as other ethnicities? Purpose of study: The field of Environmental Justice examines the equal treatment and involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income, with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies (EPA). The study of Environmental justice became popular in the 1980s, when communities of color began to speak out about the inequalities that they were being disproportionately burdened with. This disproportionate burdening is still existent today and is caused by factors such as prejudiced siting, misguided regulatory policy and unequal political power. Currently, the city of Gainesville-Hall County has the most protected green space (parks, recreation areas and privately owned open land) of any urban county in the state of Georgia. Thus, the following questions arise: who has access to these areas, and is their conservation valued more than equitable access to them? Given the current lack of data on this topic for the city of Gainesville, this study is aimed to highlight gap areas where community access to greenspace should be improved. Methods: GIS will be used to map and analyze the existing greenspace in Gainesville-Hall County, and to determine urban greenspace accessibility for different ethnic groups. Expected results: The spatial distribution of access to greenspace in Gainesville, Georgia is uneven among different ethnic groups
