Authentically Emergent: In Search of a Truly Progressive Christianity
Are Brian McLaren, Tony Jones, Doug Pagitt, and Rob Bell “yesterday’s news,” as many evangelicals seem to think? Truth and the New Kind of Christian (2005) tried to provide a balanced assessment of McLaren’s and Jones’s views. But, they seem to be right about much more that is affecting evangelicals than was realized then. Also, that book misunderstood one of their core claims: everything is interpretation. Moreover, their views have developed over the years, e.g., ethically about colonialism, its influences, and how we should live now. They also have advanced several further claims about the gospel and traditional doctrines. To what extent should Christians embrace their views? Are these the ways to go forward toward a more authentic Christianity, one that is morally better, and a better fit, for our times? Like Truth, this book gives careful attention to their thought. It also offers its own portrait of major shaping influences on Western, Americanized Christianity. But, there remains a root issue that keeps the Western church, whether progressive emergents or evangelicals, in its “Babylonian captivity.” It is liberation from that root that will lead to an authentically emergent Christianity.https://digitalcommons.biola.edu/faculty-books/1463/thumbnail.jp
The Descent
Follow the bittersweet story of a young man who is fleeing an abusive home life and seeking respite as he journeys to and descends into a mountain called Hamartia*. This strange mountain is outwardly glorious but soon betrays the fact that it is a deadly trap filled with treacherous terrain, shadowy people, and a terrifying mystical dimension. Haunted by his past life experiences, he quickly finds out that the evil forces within this wretched mountain can be much worse than the life from which he was fleeing. Hope and despair wage heart-rending battles for complete control of his very soul as he encounters various characters and circumstances inside the depths of this mysterious mountain. By the time he reaches the bottom of this seemingly desperate and godforsaken place, his life has unraveled and spiraled completely out of control. It is in these murky depths that he is surprised to find one final chance at redemption. The choice he makes will forever change his life. Which one will he make? Which one would you make?*Harmartia is a Greek word, meaning, to miss the mark . Intergenerational Family Solidarity as a Migration Compass
Incorporating contemporary theories of Aliyah (Jewish migration to Israel) by English speakers and family intergenerational solidarity, this article compares the perspective of older women who immigrated to Israel accompanied by their families with representatives of organizational stakeholders: paid professionals as well as volunteers. The textual corpus of 14 episodic interviews conducted in two Israeli cities has been analyzed using the method of descending hierarchical clustering. The resulting four clusters focus on information, family, friends, and language-related challenges, in the opposition of public sphere (Clusters 1 and 4) versus private sphere (Clusters 2 and 3). The privileged condition of family solidarity contributes to the migrants’ abilities to overcome the difficulties, buffering them from migration-related stress. The findings are discussed in the light of a theoretical compass model of intergenerational Aliyah

26.5 x 23.5 cm, Pen, Ink, and Charcoal on Cardstock. Illustration of a man in court with a judge looking down and pointing at him. Above the judge is an arm holding a torch.
When so translated it is always in its reflexive form. Its primary meaning is to render judgment . Both meanings appear in one verse, where the verb occurs twice. If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge (palal=intensive) him; but if a man sin against the Lord, who shall intreat (palal=reflexive) for him? I Sam. 2:25.; Thus at the heart of the word prayis the thought of self-judgement. The publican of Luke 18 assumed the only right and proper attitude in prayer.; The reflexive form indicates that the action of the verb is turned upon one\u27s self; IV: 8:41; Hebrew Etymology; Conscience; Self.https://digitalcommons.biola.edu/ejpace-cartoons/1023/thumbnail.jp

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction for instruction in righteousness. ; 1 Tim.- And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh. ; John- For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. ; 1 John- Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us. ; Matt- And Jesus, when he was baptized, went straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him. ; Luke- John answered,-- I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, -- he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire. ; 1 Cor.- Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? ; Eph.- I pray that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man. ; Acts- And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all. ; Mal.- Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name. ; 2 Thess.- Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all. ; I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord. -Psalm 116:13.; The Father\u27s Loving Cup to his Children;https://digitalcommons.biola.edu/ejpace-cartoons/1144/thumbnail.jp
