    Distinguishing the Church: Explorations in Word, Sacrament, and Discipline

    As the Protestant Reformers did, so twenty-first-century Christians also recognize the need to distinguish between the true and false church. Thus, they find themselves looking closely at the modern church to determine whether it is a true and faithful church. Today’s Christians know that proper criteria are necessary to discern the true church. The most common criteria, wrote John Calvin, are that the Word of God is rightly preached and heard and that the sacraments are administered according to Christ’s institution. Moreover, Martin Luther said that suffering is a telltale sign of God’s people, while Anabaptist and Reformed Christians included discipline among the distinguishing marks of the church. These standards take on particular poignancy today: The global church continues to live under severe persecution, and the American church, characterized by a lack of discipline, has been wounded by its own sins of chasing sex and power. In this collection of essays, first given at annual meetings of the Evangelical Theological Society, the authors take time to reflect on the Reformational marks of the church in order to help reform Christ’s bride.     Performance Attribution of the First Biblically Responsible-based SRI Index

    In the U.S., two of the most important investment trends over the last 10 years have been the rise of index investing and the rise of Sustainable, Responsible and Impact (SRI) investing. So, it would make sense that new indexes would emerge based on SRI principles. One such index is the new Inspire Small/Mid Cap Impact Equal Weight Index, which is the first biblically-based SRI index. This paper briefly discusses the methodology of this index and shows that its strong back-tested risk-adjusted returns (relative to its non-SRI S&P benchmark), are not due to sector bias (as one would expect), but are attributed to favorable stock selection within each industry sector. This index is likely the beginning of a wave of more sophisticated passive products that will meet the needs of niche investor populations better than the active products of the past

    Fleeing the Stadium: Recovering the Conceptual Unity of Evagrius’ Acedia

    The definition of acedia presents unique conceptual problems among the eight Evagrian logismoi. Its descriptions are so complex and varied as to render the concept seemingly incoherent. This article argues that the conceptual unity of acedia has been obscured by the translation of Evagrian logismoi into the ‘deadly sins’ tradition, resulting in a category error. Acedia is more properly understood, not as a psychological state or a sin, but rather as an array of demonic temptations with the unifying end‐goal of interrupting the anchoritic ideal of sustained contemplation

    Evaluating the efficacy of using sentence frames for learning new vocabulary in science

    Science students are increasingly challenged to use technical language related to the topics that they are studying, and therefore, science teachers benefit from knowing which tools are effective to support students in learning to use new terms. This study examined the impact of using one such tool—sentences frames—to teach science vocabulary, as measured through a science‐writing task. Using an experimental approach with extant middle school science classes that offered a sample of 75 mainly Latino school students from grades six through eight, the researcher together with participating teachers identified 10 essential terms per science unit. The teachers used vocabulary‐focused sentence frames for teaching the terms in one science unit, and a more traditional science text‐based approach for teaching vocabulary in another unit. The writing task required at the end of the units consisted of essays in response to science‐based prompts that directed students to use as many target science words as possible; matching/cloze format quizzes were also used to measure pretest and posttest receptive vocabulary knowledge. Findings indicated that there were advantages for teaching new science vocabulary via sentence frames as measured by use of the words in writing, but there were no advantages for sentence frames on quizzes measuring receptive vocabulary. Advantages of sentence frames for writing approached but did not reach statistical significance. There was some evidence that current and previous English language learners benefited more than initial English speakers from sentence frames, implying that utilizing sentence frames to teach science vocabulary might offer needed support especially for these subgroups. Limitations of the study included the sample size and the possibility that the strategy utilized in the comparison group might have offered some of the same advantages in producing language with technical vocabulary that the sentence frames unit offered

    Controllable negative differential resistance on charge transport through strained and tilted DNA molecules

    A double-stranded DNA molecule subject to a perpendicular gating electric field and a small mechanical strain exhibits a negative differential resistance (NDR) in its current–voltage (I–V) characteristics. Using an advanced two-dimensional tight-binding model including hopping integrals for the next nearest-neighbors, we implement perturbative strain- and tilted angle-dependent DNA helix conformation in conjunction with the theories of Slater–Koster and linear elasticity. The degree of NDR can be tuned by adjusting the tilt angle and mechanical strain of the DNA. This effect arises because of a surface charge distribution near the contacts due to the normal component of the electric field and structural change of the DNA molecule due to the strain. It is shown that enhancement of NDR peak current and a large peak-to-valley ratio of NDR are achieved by an increase of the tilt angle and stretching strain. Finally, a series of step-like current jumps without NDR features are exhibited in the weak DNA-lead coupling regime. This disappearance of NDR stems from the fact that reduced conduction through metal electrodes with a sufficiently small tunneling rate compensates the current drop

    Behaviors, Benefits, and Barriers of Humanitarian Aid Leader Humility

    This study explores how humility is contextualized in the culture of faith-based humanitarian aid leadership. Consensual Qualitative Research was used to synthesize the personal and observational experiences of 13 humanitarian aid leader exemplars. Characteristics and behaviors of humble leaders are discussed, along with the benefits of humble leadership on aid workers, local partners, and recipients of humanitarian aid services. A theistic dimension of humility is noted along with an outcome pathway for humble practice which considers barriers native to the humanitarian aid context
