General Revelation, Science and integration: Objections and opportunities
Recent controversies over integrating modern science and Scripture have led to faculty firings and wholesale changes in academic programs. An underlying question is the relationship between science and general revelation. This article argues that modern science and general revelation are not the same but the relationship between them depends upon the approach one takes to the object of general revelation. The article concludes with guidelines for integrating general and special revelation faithfully
Circular transmission resonances and magnetic field effects in a ring of quantum dots connected to external leads in the meta-configuration
The transmission and the circular transmission are investigated for a ring of quantum dots (in a benzene-type configuration) connected to external leads in the meta-configuration. A computational method utilizing the tight-binding approximation to the Schrödinger equation is used to solve for the transmission probabilities as a function of the electron energy and external magnetic flux. The flux dependence is incorporated into the model using a standard procedure involving the Aharonov–Bohm effect. The positions of the transmission zeros and poles in the complex energy plane, and their possible interference with or even complete cancellation of each other, are shown to correlate with the amplitude and structure of the circular transmission resonances. Large-amplitude resonances of the circular transmission are found to occur when two poles of the transmission are separated along the imaginary axis. These resonances demonstrate a high degree of flux sensitivity at specific energy values and flux ranges. A small change in flux causes the orientation of the resonance poles in the complex energy plane to rotate parallel to the real energy axis, resulting in a concurrent decrease in the circular transmission amplitude. The flux-dependent interference between the transmission poles and zeros in the complex energy plane leads to a decrease of the circular transmission resonance amplitudes. The circular transmission and its corresponding current–voltage characteristic provide more information related to the external flux than can be obtained from the normal transmission alone
Social Signaling and the Warrior-Big-Man among the Western Dani : A Man Called Tibenuk
We employ the Social Signaling Model (SSM) and life history of a Western Dani big-man, Tibenuk, to analyze a neglected curiosity in the career of the big-man type. The big-man is renowned as an economic entrepreneur, the master of material displays. In New Guinea, however, big-men had invariably first gained fame and some influence as eminent warriors. The SSM accounts for this two-part career path by proposing that small-scale social organization rests on honest, competitive signaling of individual and collective fighting strength, with leaders being those who excel in these contests. The performances for which big-men are already known, conspicuous ceremonial displays, broadcast this strength indirectly. Explicitly conceptualized as symbolic fighting, they constituted indexical proxies for their sponsors’ individual and collective willingness and ability to fight. Success on the battlefield, though, signaled fighting strength more directly. Men therefore had to demonstrate strength on both the battlefield and the ceremonial ground if they were to become big-men. This was Tibenuk’s achievement. When he was young and at his physical peak, he demonstrated outstanding capability in war. War is a young man’s game, however, and as his physical capacities waned, he shifted to politics, an older man’s game, honing his political talents and developing extensive political networks that allowed him to sponsor massive pig feasts, the principal form of conspicuous ceremonial display. Tibenuk’s career also reveals synergies between warrior and political talents that hitherto have been overlooked in big-man analysis

Optical In Vivo Imaging in Tuberculosis Research
Tuberculosis remains one of the greatest challenges to global health, making the development of novel diagnostics and therapeutics for tuberculosis a high priority. However, the unique cause, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, demonstrates a number of characteristics that have hindered progress in tuberculosis research. These challenges include an unusually slow growth rate that makes traditional microbiological methods time consuming, a unique glycolipid-rich cell wall that causes bacterial aggregation and complicates enumeration of bacterial loads, and a highly variable disease progression including both acute and chronic stages of infection that can complicate in vivo studies due to variation between infected animals. One strategy that has proven to be remarkably successful in overcoming these challenges is the application of in vivo optical imaging to the study of M. tuberculosis. This approach allows the progress of an infection to be followed in individual animals over time, enabling researchers to better understand this important pathogen and assay new vaccines, treatments, and diagnostic tests more accurately. In this chapter, we discuss the techniques and tools that have been developed to facilitate application of bioluminescent and fluorescent in vivo imaging to tuberculosis research. We also summarize the progress and potential contributions of real-time imaging to the tuberculosis field. Based on recent progress, optical imaging has the potential to transform the field, leading to more rapid discovery of therapeutics, vaccines and mechanisms of pathogenesis.

Fundamental Limits and Tradeoffs in Autocatalytic Pathways
This paper develops some basic principles to study autocatalytic networks and exploit their structural properties in order to characterize their inherent fundamental limits and tradeoffs. In a dynamical system with autocatalytic structure, the system\u27s output is necessary to catalyze its own production. Our study has been motivated by a simplified model of a glycolysis pathway. First, the properties of this class of pathways are investigated through a network model, which consists of a chain of enzymatically catalyzed intermediate reactions coupled with an autocatalytic component. We explicitly derive a hard limit on the minimum achievable L 2 -gain disturbance attenuation and a hard limit on its minimum required output energy. Then, we show how these resulting hard limits lead to some fundamental tradeoffs between transient and steady-state behavior of the network and its net productio
Wannabe Israeli: immigrants wrestling with their identity
While some people have no particular problems stating in a word or two how they self-identify, others may struggle with this task, as it stirs up emotions, doubts, and deeper reflections. This paper proposes methodology for analysing short free-text comments in relation to immigrants’ self-identification. It builds on a quantitative study concerning migration to Israel by English-speakers, concentrating on a qualitative analysis of their self-identification in the light of 249 free-text comments. The constructs of anchoring and objectification from the interdisciplinary theory of social representations guide the interpretation of results obtained in a two-step process: classical qualitative content analysis followed by the Multiple Correspondence Analysis. The findings demonstrate that at least for some immigrants in Israel, self-identification appears to be a complex process, in which single and hyphenated identifications concentrate more on the negative aspects or challenges of acculturation, while self-identifications based on religion and social role focus more on the positive view of giving advice to others
Short-Term Mission Trips: Developing the Racial and Ethnic Consciousness of White Participants
Utilizing a theoretical framework of the racial and ethnic habitus constructed from Bourdieu’s habitus, in addition to theories of racial identity and whiteness studies, this study examines the potential of short-term mission trips to raise the racial and ethnic consciousness of white participants, oftentimes a first step in improving race relations. Due to the limited empirical research on short-term missions, research on study abroad regarding racial and ethnic consciousness is utilized as a proxy. It is concluded that the racial and ethnic habitus is not easily malleable to social forces that are present in short-term mission trips, and even if it is, the effects may be temporary. Furthermore, it is more likely that differing racial and ethnic habituses may result in conflict between the various stakeholders involved in short-term missions. It is evident that more empirical research needs to be conducted on short-term missions in order to provide a better understanding of these religious initiatives
Societal Polyphony in Burney and Austen: Using Digital Tools to Invite Students into the Conversation
How can we invite our students to experience the social wit and wisdom of the eighteenth-century novel, on an interactive level? Addressing challenges faced by those who teach eighteenth-century novels in General Education surveys or seminar classes, this essay offers two lesson plans--easily adapted for different texts and courses--that use digital technology to engage students\u27 imaginations and cultivate skills of reading comprehension and interpretation. The first, Evelina Tweet Fest, invites students to participate in a collaborative conversation on a simulated Twitter platform, translating the literary polyphony of Frances Burney\u27s epistolary novel into the language of our own, status-conscious milieu. The second, Pride and Prejudice meets Myers-Briggs, taps into student interest in online personality quizzes and asks them to use Austen\u27s textual clues to explain character quirks and relational dynamics
