No full textThe Society of Children\u27s Spirituality: Christian Perspectives launched in 2003 with its first conference held at Concordia University Chicago, in River Forest, Illinois. An earlier edition of this book, composed of chapters based on presentations from that conference, was published in 2004. In 2018 a decision was made to revise this book from the inaugural conference, updating some chapters and providing a new perspective on the ongoing work of the organization, now called the Children\u27s Spirituality Summit. For example, given the advances in what we are learning from brain research, a chapter on this topic has been extensively updated.
What this revised volume provides is a collection of chapters offering theological perspectives, social science research, and insights on ministry practice about the spiritual lives of children: how they relate to God, how this relationship grows, and what helps in promoting the spiritual formation and vitality of children in the home, church, and school This book offers twenty-three chapters by professors, graduate students, social science researchers, and ministry leaders from different denominational traditions addressing a wide range of issues in theory, research, and ministry practice with children. Comparing attitudes of first-grade dual language immersion versus mainstream English students
No full textStudents’ attitudes in first-grade dual language immersion (DLI) classes were compared with those of similar students in mainstream English classes. Results for the sample of 81 Latinx students indicated that for attitudes toward activities in Spanish, including reading and speaking in public and with relatives, both ELLs and non-ELLs in DLI had more positive attitudes, often at statistically significant levels and with strong effect sizes. Program placement predicted student attitude on some variables even with parent and demographic variables factored out. There were also significant advantages for DLI on measures of multiculturalism. The findings indicated that attitudinal differences previously found for students at higher grades in DLI can emerge by the end of the first grade. The study also compared responses from parent questionnaires for the two programs and found significant differences, with more Spanish spoken at home and more interest in Spanish reading among DLI parents
Stressful events and religious/spiritual struggle: Moderating effects of the general orienting system.
No full textReligious/spiritual struggle (R/S struggle) often occurs in the context of stressful life events and is consistently associated with higher levels of psychological distress. However, little is known about the factors that cushion or exacerbate the effects of stressful life events on R/S struggle. The orienting system is an individual’s general way of viewing and dealing with the world and includes resources and burdens for handling stressful events. This study examines the moderating effect of emotional, social, spiritual, behavioral, and cognitive domains of the orienting system on the relationship between stressful life events and R/S struggle in a cross-sectional study of a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults. Multiple indicators of each domain were examined. The results indicated that emotional (anger, death anxiety), social (social isolation), behavioral (smoking status), and spiritual (insecure relationship with God) burdens moderated the relationship between stressful life events and R/S struggle. Cognitive (self-esteem, optimism), social (emotional support), and spiritual (religious hope) resources did not moderate this relationship. These results indicate that multiple components of the orienting system function as burdens that magnify the relationship between stressful life events and R/S struggle. Further, these findings point to potential clinical targets for reducing the intensity of R/S struggle in the context of stressful life events
