Per un lessico dell’astronomia classica (1). I nomi dell’astronomia fra V-IV secolo a.C.: μετεωρολογία, ἀστρολογία, ἀστρονομία

This is the first of a series of notes on the technical lexicon of Greek astronomy. Between the 5th and 4th centuries BC, in Greece, the study of the sky becomes an autonomous discipline, whose concepts and practices favour the formation of a specific vocabulary. The study of this technical lexicon – both the Greek terminology and its Latin reception – offers a privileged point of view on the development of astronomy. The present note is devoted to the names with which the Greeks designate the study of sky

“En simples physiciens”. La perception animale et la connaissance sensible selon Leibniz en 1714

In his solution to the problem of sensible knowledge, Leibniz seeks to avoid the extreme positions held by the Cartesians and Hobbes. The conceptual distinctions that Leibniz introduces allow him to overcome difficulties raised by his own earlier definitions of sensus. He is consequently able to reconcile the continuity he introduces between animal and human perceptions with the normative and, at the same time, propositional aspects of perceptual judgments. In this paper I will begin by describing his late conception of both human and animal perception, and I will compare this notion with his early notion of perception and the difficulties it gave rise to; finally, I will show the advantages that his new conception can offer for solving the epistemic problem of perception.

The notion of beauty recurs numerous times and with different shades ofmeaning in the Enneads and, above all, it assumes a central role in the Plotinian thought.Plotinus, in fact, uses it to describe the different levels of the reality of his metaphysicalsystem, in particular of the Intellect. In this sense, the notion of beauty seems to be closelyconnected to that of life, which is the main aspect of the intelligible reality. Thiscontribution wants to show the role that the notion of life plays in the creation of thePlotinian notion of beauty

Digital Epigraphy. Tra automazione e singolarizzazione

Recent trends in scholarly publications, public debate on newspapers, anddigital projects in the humanities seem to privilege the quantitative and computationalapproach to historical studies, as it is considered more objective, and therefore more correct. But some examples driven from direct experience in the field of digital epigraphy show howimportant the human component of any digital project still is for a more complete andcorrect comprehension of the traces of the pas

The following critical note aims at highlighting the liveliness and depth of three crucial thesis of Epicurean Ethics, by drawing on a recent publication, edited by Enrico Piergiacomi, of a selection of essays by Phillip Mitsis, A. S. Onassis Professor of Hellenic Culture and Civilization at the New York University. The issues addressed are freedom, pleasure and death, in relation to which Epicurus’ disconcerting teachings show a surprising ability to dialogue with the later history of moral thought. In this regard, the philosophy of Kepos turns out to be a definitely contemporary interlocutor, able to stimulate our rational capacity, contributing, at the same time, to the problems of our time

I examine in this paper the cases of three authors (Clauberg, Du Hamel and Tschirnhaus) who share the attempt to identify, in the context of the prima philosophia understood as ontology, a principle which must be first in the order of knowledge. In so doing they ideally confront themselves with Descartes’ opinion, according to which the first principle necessarily lets us know the existence of something which must be for us the best known of all. This debate concerns the relationship between the principle of non contradiction and the Cartesian cogito, but also the relationship between the principle of non contradiction and the principle of the excluded third, which maintains, under certain conditions, the primacy in ontology

Welt, Natur e Kosmos nelle Gesammelte Abhandlungen di Karl Löwith

In 1960 Karl Löwith publishes the Gesammelte Abhandlungen: zur Kritik der geschichtlichen Existenz, a multiform work that consists of several previously published contributions. Starting from the analysis of the word Welt in this work, it will be identified the fundamental issues addressed by the philosophy of Karl Löwith following the common thread that binds his writings and focusing the programmatic direction towards which his philosophy tends. From the analysis three fundamental meanings related to the word Welt will emerge: in reference to history, anthropology and nature. Getting into the details of these three meanings will show how the concept of ‘world in general’ for the philosopher is inextricably linked to that of the world of nature and how other meanings depend on it
