Deduktive Schlüsse in der literaturwissenschaftlichen Praxis 
(Abstract)

It is sometimes suggested that deductive reasoning has no place in literary studies, particularly 
when it comes to the justification of literary interpretations. The thesis is that deductive 
arguments (almost) never occur and deductive reasoning plays no or at most a marginal role in 
the actual practice of interpretation. In this essay I will argue that this thesis is false. Using 
counterexamples, it can be shown that deductive arguments are de facto used in the practice of 
literary interpretation. Although only an exemplary and not comprehensive investigation of 
argumentative practices in literary studies can be made here, it can also be made plausible that 
deductive arguments are not exceptions, but a normal, regularly encountered and legitimate 
phenomenon of this practice. Furthermore, it can be shown that the thesis criticized here is 
based on a too narrow understanding of deductive reasoning. Finally, I will argue that (from a 
methodological point of view) it would be an unnecessary restriction to exclude deductions 
from our methodological toolbox: to abandon deductive reasoning from the practice of 
interpretation would be tantamount to renouncing a useful method of justifying (and refuting) 
interpretive hypotheses. Therefore, a fundamental methodological scepticism about deductive 
reasoning is unfounded. 
The essay is structured as follows: First, I will present a current example of how the sceptical 
attitude towards deductions in literary studies is motivated (Section 1). I will show that the 
concept of deduction underlying this scepticism is usually based on the assumption that 
deductive arguments contain ›general rules‹ or ›law-like assertions‹ in their premises. Second, 
I will confront the concept of deduction assumed there with the understanding of deductive 
arguments as it is usually assumed in logic (Section 2). It will become apparent that a conception 
of deductive arguments based on general rules or law-like assertions is (though not false) too 
narrow. After a short caveat concerning the reconstruction of ›real‹ arguments in general 
(Section 3), I will present some examples of deductive arguments in interpretations of literary 
texts (Section 4). These arguments have the logical form of arguments from modus ponens, 
modus tollens and disjunctive syllogism. The examples not only show that deductive reasoning 
actually occurs in the practice of literary interpretation, but also make it plausible that deductive 
arguments are an unproblematic and legitimate method of justifying and/or refuting 
interpretations. After considering what causes may have led to the dissemination of the thesis 
that deductions do not occur in practice (Section 5), I conclude with a plea to accept deductive 
arguments as a legitimate tool of justification among many others (Section 6).

Emotionen werden in Bezug auf Begriff, Phänomen und Theoretisierung von zahlreichen natur-
, geistes-, kultur- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen als genuiner Forschungsgegenstand 
beansprucht. In den einzelnen Fachdisziplinen konkurrieren zusätzlich einander ausschließende 
Zugangsmethoden. Diese heterogene Ausgangslage lässt es als besonders komplexes Unterfan-
gen erscheinen, den Forschungsgegenstand ›Emotion‹ für ein Handbuch adäquat zu erfassen 
und ihn in einem derartigen geordneten, repräsentativen Wissens-Kompendium mit Nach-
schlagefunktion darzustellen. Handbücher gehören momentan zu den populärsten Textgattun-
gen des wissenschaftlichen Schreibens – im Gegensatz etwa zu den wenig geschätzten 
Sammelbänden. Die Emotionsforschung ist ein vergleichsweise junges, aber etabliertes For-
schungsfeld. Mit der Aktualität der Gattung ›Handbücher‹ und dem Stand der Emotionsfor-
schung mag es zusammenhängen, dass Handbücher in der deutschen wie internationalen 
Emotionsforschung auffallend prosperieren. In den USA ist im Dezember 2017 ein Handbuch 
mit einer besonders relevanten Ausrichtung für die literaturwissenschaftliche Forschung zu 
Emotionen erschienen. Der 881 Seiten starke Band der renommierten Reihe ›Palgrave Hand-
books‹ nimmt das Verhältnis von »affect studies« und »textual criticism« in den Blick. Als 
Affect studies versteht sich eine poststrukturalistische Forschungsrichtung aus dem angloame-
rikanischen und kanadischen Raum. Sie grenzt sich seit der Jahrtausendwende innerhalb des 
Forschungsfeldes ab, das in der deutschen Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft seit den 90er Jah-
ren als ›Emotionsforschung‹ bezeichnet wird. 
Konstitutiv für die ›Affekttheorie‹ ist seit Brian Massumi der Begriff ›Affekt‹ selbst. Der An-
satz des Handbuchs ist darum (1.) von einer starken Auseinandersetzung mit dem Begriff affect 
geprägt, der poststrukturalistisch verstanden wird. Der aktuelle kulturpolitische Abgrenzungs-
prozess im Forschungsfeld geht – wie in solchen Fällen naheliegend – mit einem starken Inno-
vationsanspruch einher. Die Herausgeber Donald R. Wehrs und Thomas Blake streben (2.) 
deutlich eine Abgrenzung und Positionierung innerhalb des großen, inter- und transdisziplinär 
ausgerichteten Forschungsfeldes der Emotionen an. Und (3.) versucht die Publikation den ge-
nuinen Anspruch eines Handbuchs zu erfüllen, nämlich das zentrale Wissen zu einem Gegen-
stand in einer mehr oder weniger handlichen Veröffentlichung der geneigten Leserschaft zur 
konzentrierten Aufnahme bzw. zum sporadischen Nachschlagen anzubieten.  
Vor diesem Hintergrund betont Wehrs in der Einleitung die dem Handbuch zugrunde gelegten 
Begriffsdefinitionen: Das Verständnis des Begriffs affect studies orientiere sich an der affect 
theory der Geisteswissenschaften unter Bezugnahme auf Gilles Deleuzesʼ durch Nietzsche ge-
prägten Poststrukturalismus und Eve Sedgwicks Queer-Theorie (3). Affect entspricht gerade 
nicht dem deutschen Begriff ›Affekt‹, der in der deutschen Emotionsforschung der Frühen Neu-
zeit häufig im historischen Verständnis als Oberbegriff verwendet wird. Er entspricht auch nicht 
seiner gegenwärtigen (emotionspsychologischen) Verwendung als plötzliches, starkes und

kurzzeitiges Auftreten von Emotionen. Das poststrukturalistische Verständnis spinozistisch-de-
leuzianischer Prägung versteht Affekt vielmehr als Phänomen der Zustandsveränderung und 
des Übergangs. Körper werden nicht als abgegrenzte Einheiten einer ›fixen‹ Person aufgefasst, 
sondern als veränderliche Arrangements, die durch wechselseitige Affizierungen interagieren. 
Massumi sieht affect als Gegenbegriff zu emotion und verbindet letzteren Begriff mit fixity and 
closure (98). Affect hat für die affect theory eine ähnliche Funktion wie ›Sprache‹ für den Po-
strukturalismus der 70er Jahre. »Affect is treated as the prime site or engine of liberating sub-
version, or as place where oppressive ›nurturing‹ does its work« (3). Im Handbuch soll die 
Beziehung zwischen Affekt und Text aus der Perspektive ›neurokognitiv-evolutionärer‹ Theo-
rien und auf der Grundlage poststrukturalistischer Philosophie erörtert werden (viii).  
Vertreter kognitionstheoretischer und evolutionsgeschichtlicher Ansätze haben auch in der Ver-
gangenheit Affinitäten durch die gleichermaßen ahistorische Qualität der Modelle und Begriffe 
gezeigt, die sie auf literarische Texte anwenden. Bei dem Kompositum »neurocognitive-evolu-
tionary« (S. 39) scheint es sich allerdings um einen Neologismus zu handeln. Mit Sedgwicks 
Queer-Theorie entscheiden sich die Herausgeber gegen das Modell der Sektionalität der Gender 
Studies und für eine Infragestellung von Identitätskategorien, was mit der Qualität der Verän-
derlichkeit dieses spezifischen Affektbegriffs harmoniert. 
Ursprünglich hat sich die poststrukturalistische Affekttheorie um 2000 nicht nur aus der Unzu-
friedenheit mit der Vernachlässigung des Körpers entwickelt, sondern auch als Kritik an der 
Forschungsdominanz des Textuellen und der Repräsentation. Der programmatisch textorien-
tierte, noch dazu die Literatur präferierende Ansatz des Handbuchs erscheint darum als starke 
Positionierung in einem kritischen Feld. Die einzelnen Beiträge des Bandes sollen zeigen, wie 
sich das Potential von (modernen) Emotionstheorien (»affect theory«) vor allem für die litera-
tur-, z.T. für die auch film- und musikwissenschaftliche Forschung nutzen lässt. Eine Kontex-
tualisierung der literarischen Texte mit Emotionstheorien bzw. ›Affektheorien‹ erfolgt 
größtenteils ahistorisch unter Bezug auf die gegenwärtigen philosophisch-naturwissenschaftli-
chen Modelle (u.a. Brian Massumi, Antonio Damasio). Eine mögliche Problematik der ahisto-
rischen Übertragung wird nicht thematisiert. 
Das Handbuch ist nach der Einleitung in drei Teile gegliedert: Der erste Teil zu ›Kontexte und 
Fokusse‹ stellt die philosophischen und wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen der aktuellen Emoti-
onstheorien vor und gibt einen Überblick über ihre Varietäten. Der zweite Teil befasst sich mit 
dem Verhältnis von ›Affektivität (affectivity) und Textualität‹, was vorrangig emotionsbezo-
gene Rezeption meint. Und der dritte Teil ›Variationen des Affektiven (affective) / Textuelle 
Wechselbeziehungen‹  zeigt die ›Dynamiken‹ von ›Affekten‹ und Texten exemplarisch in ver-
schiedenen Epochen und Text- bzw. Kunstgattungen auf. 
In der Einleitung referiert und interpretiert Herausgeber Wehrs theoretische Positionen und li-
terarische Darstellungen von den ältesten schriftlichen Überlieferungen bis zur Gegenwart in 
chronologischer Folge. Die Einleitung bietet damit Material zur Kontextualisierung an. Ihre 
Textbreite beginnt mit dem Gilgamesch-Epos und seiner Darstellung von männlicher Freund-
schaft und reicht bis zur Konsolidierung neurokognitiv-evolutionärer Forschung und der affect 
theory in der Gegenwart, die als aktueller Zielpunkt dargestellt wird. Von den drei Haupteilen 
mit jeweils acht bis 13 Beiträgen können im Folgenden nur einige Thesen angerissen werden:  
Der erste Teil ›Kontexte und Fokusse‹ vermittelt die philosophischen und wissenschaftlichen 
Grundlagen zu Emotionen und zeigt eine Übersicht ihrer Varietäten. Die ersten beiden Aufsätze 
erörtern unterschiedliche Auffassungen von affect und emotion im 21. Jahrhundert. Kate Stan-
ley erläutert in »Affect and Emotion« Jamesons Bedeutung für Massimos poststrukturalisti-
schen Affektbegriff (Aufsatz 2). Brook Miller diskutiert mögliche Beziehungen zwischen

Affect Studies, Kognitionstheorie und Literatur (Aufsatz 3). Im Anschluss widmet sich Bruce 
McConachie der These, dass prosocial emotions gleichzeitig mit Entwicklung von Sprache ent-
standen seien (Aufsatz 4). Julia Reinhard Lupton diskutiert ›affektive‹, körperliche und auf die 
Umwelt bezogene Facetten des Vertrauens im Theater. Sie zeigt u.a. zur Dover-Szene in König 
Lear, dass Theater ein Experimentierfeld für die Entwicklung von Vertrauen darstellt (Auf-
satz 5). In ihrem Beitrag zu »Affect and Narratology« betont Claudia Breger, dass seit 2000 mit 
den Spiegelneuronen Kognitionstheorien Eingang in die Narratologie gefunden haben (Auf-
satz 8). Richard C. Sha versteht affects als Emotionen ohne Subjekt und Kausalität (Aufsatz 9). 
Marshall Alcorn fasst emotion als Bezeichnung für Basisemotionen nach Tomkins auf. Er wen-
det sich gegen die Opposition von Vernunft und affect, wie sie Aristoteles einflussreich vertre-
ten hat (Aufsatz 11). 
Der zweite Teil ›Affektivität und Textualität‹ führt emotionsbezogene Rezeptionsphänomene 
vor. Zunächst betont Dana LaCourse Munteanu, dass Paradigmenwechsel in der Darstellung 
romantischer Gefühle kulturelle Grenzen verschieben können: »Literary love fosters copycat 
tendencies in the readers« (335) (Aufsatz 12). Florian Cova, Julien Deonna und David Sander 
gehen vom paradox of tragedy aus und untersuchen die Bedeutung der Gefühle (feelings) für 
die Wertschätzung ›ernster‹ Literatur (Aufsatz 13). Im Anschluss betrachtet Jeff Pruchnic 
Burke als nützliches Korrektiv gegen problematische Tendenzen der Emotionsforschung und 
sieht Brücken zwischen mind und body (385) (Aufsatz 14). Howard Sklar erläutert, wie Erzäh-
lungen Sympathielenkung betreiben (Aufsatz 17). W.B. Gerard kann eindrucksvoll zeigen, dass 
Sternes Figur der psychischen kranken Maria (poor Maria) durch eine empathische Rezeption 
den Diskurs über psychisch Kranke geändert hat (Aufsatz 18). Abschließend erläutert Jaimey 
Fisher am Beispiel des Kriegsfilms Saving Private Ryan, wie der kognitive Ansatz mit der De-
leuzianischen Theorie in Bezug auf Körperlichkeit und Kollektivität harmoniert (Aufsatz 19). 
Der dritte Teil ›Variationen des Affektiven / Textuelle Wechselbeziehungen‹ zeigt die Wech-
selbeziehungen zwischen affect und literarischem Text in verschiedenen Epochen und Textgat-
tungen exemplarisch in chronologischer Ordnung auf. Im Vordergrund stehen 
angloamerikanische Texte. Mit vier Beiträgen ist die spanische Nationalliteratur besonders prä-
sent; weitere europäische Literaturen werden nicht berücksichtigt. Durch gleichfalls vier Bei-
träge ist auch die Epoche des Mittelalters besonders gut vertreten. Außerdem ergänzt ein 
Beitrag zur Filmmusik und zu amerikanischer Filmgeschichte den dritten Teil. Ausgehend von 
einem kognitionstheoretischen Verständnis nimmt Antonia Harbus Wortanalysen in literari-
schen Texten des old und middle Englisch vor (550) und erläutert, wie Emotionen bei modernen 
Lesern erzeugt werden (Aufsatz 20). Nicholas Myklebust zeigt zur mittelalterlichen Sammlung 
der ›Harley lyrics‹, »that the conflicting cues drawn from alliterative and accentual-sylabic pro-
sodies interfere with the surprise response that rhythmic entrainment exploits in order to charge 
the reader with an affective stance toward the text« (578) (Aufsatz 21). Von den vier Beiträgen 
zur spanischen Literatur sei Howard Mancings Beitrag zu Don Quichotes ›affektiven Gedan-
ken‹ hervorgehoben, der Forschern wie Damasio in Bezug auf die Emotionalität von Gedanken 
zustimmt und von der Theory of Mind ausgeht. Er führt vor, dass bei Don Quichote der Leser 
Transferleistungen erbringen muss, um die Textsignale zu ›affektiven Gedanken‹ der Hauptfi-
gur mit Inhalt zu füllen (Aufsatz 23). Marta Figlerowicz’ Beitrag zu Kierkegaards ›hässlichen 
Gefühlen‹ (Aufsatz 26) und Cecilia Sjöholms Beitrag zu Descartes’ Emotionsverständnis (Auf-
satz 24) beziehen sich nicht auf literarische Texte, sondern exemplifizieren die entsprechende 
Theorie. So diskutiert Sjöholm grundlegende Aspekte wie den Affektbezug des Urteilens und 
der Einbildungskraft. Sie weist auf die Übersetzungsproblematik hin, wenn Descartes’ im Ge-
hirn verorteter Seelenbegriff im Englischen mit mind übersetzt wird (664). Einen kurzen, aber 
instruktiven Abriss der Geschichte der Affekte und der Filmmusik gibt William Wehrs, wobei 
er die Bedeutung der Musik für die ›affektive‹ Reaktion und damit den nachhaltigen Erfolg der 
Bilder betont (Aufsatz 28).

Was die Qualität dieser Neuerscheinung als Exemplar der Gattung ›Handbuch‹ betrifft, so 
wurde eingangs auf die Schwierigkeit hingewiesen, einen so schwer fassbaren Gegenstand wie 
Emotionen – ›Affekte‹ – handlich darzubieten. Hinzu kommt, dass die Nachschlagefunktion 
eher zu einem deutschen bzw. europäischen Handbuch-Verständnis gehört als zu einer anglo-
amerikanischen Auffassung. Martin von Koppenfels und Cornelia Zumbusch zeigen dies im 
derzeit neusten deutschen Handbuch zu ›Literatur und Emotionen‹ (2016), nicht zuletzt durch 
ein Glossar am Ende des Kompendiums.1 Hingegen ist es der erklärte Anspruch eines Palgrave 
Handbook, »an unparalleled overview of a specific field of research, while also setting the 
agenda for future directions of the discipline« zu bieten.2 Sowohl den Überblickscharakter als 
auch die richtungsweisende Positionierung im Forschungsfeld erfüllt das Handbuch in reichem 
Maße. Überraschende und seltene Einblicke in die Affektkonzepte der indischen und islami-
schen Ästhetik schon in der Einleitung dokumentieren den Anspruch der Herausgeber (10). 
Und die evolutionstheoretischen und/oder kognitionstheoretischen Ansätze stellen durchweg 
den Bezug zu historischen Affektheorien her und zeigen konkrete Möglichkeiten der Anwen-
dung am (vorzugsweise literarischen) Text auf. Dabei überrascht, dass eine mögliche Proble-
matik der ahistorischen Übertragung evolutions- und kognitionstheoretischer Ansätze nicht 
thematisiert bzw. begründet zurückgewiesen wird. Deutlich verfolgt der Band die Agenda, die 
Weichen im Bereich der Emotionsforschung zu stellen. Denn eigentlich ist es nicht mehr mög-
lich, vom großen Feld der Emotionsforschung zu sprechen, wenn die affect studies ›Emotions-
forschung‹ als das Andere begreifen. Was den hohen Innovationsanspruch betrifft, so hat die 
Theory of Mind ebenso wie die Evolutionstheorien längst Eingang in die deutschen Literatur- 
und Kulturwissenschaften gefunden, wenn auch nur teilweise unter poststrukturalistischen Vor-
zeichen. Aus der Perspektive eines Handbuchs mögen rund 20 Jahre Forschung als vergleichs-
weise neu erscheinen.  
Allerdings bleibt nach der Lektüre der konzentrierten Darstellung des Verhältnisses zwischen 
Affect Studies und Textual Criticism auch folgende Einsicht: Ursprünglich waren die Affect Stu-
dies gerade gegen den Ansatz angetreten, den das Handbuch jetzt vorstellt, nämlich die Analyse 
der emotionsbezogenen Darstellung im Text. Daran ändert auch die kognitions- und evoluti-
onstheoretisch aufwendig fundierte Analyse nichts. Wenn Harbus fragt, »in which way […] 
literary texts imagine and represent emotions« (546), verfolgt sie die bekannten, allerdings nicht 
notwendig schlechteren Ziele. Aber der poststrukturalistisch nicht an ein Subjekt gebundene 
Affektbegriff, mit dessen Hilfe ein Diffundieren der Affekte in der Gesellschaft gedacht werden 
kann, zeigt seinen höchsten Innovationswert auf der politisch-sozialen Ebene. Die Literatur-
wissenschaftlerin und Genderforscherin Ann Cvetkovich hat 2012 die These aufgestellt, dass 
eine vermeintlich private Depressionserfahrung politisch sein kann, wenn sie im Kontext der 
durch (als nicht abgegrenzt verstandene) Körper diffundierende Affekte als Element einer ge-
samtgesellschaftlichen Depression gesehen wird. Diese Position erhielt nicht nur in akademi-
schen Kreisen viel Resonanz. Eine Textanalyse kann eine derartige gesellschaftliche 
Breitenwirkung nicht entfalten.3

The use of past tense in narrative discourse at first glance seems to imply that the narrated 
events are lying in the past as compared to the act of narration. However, this intuitive notion 
was doubted by several scholars in the mid 20th century, among them Käte Hamburger, Harald 
Weinrich, Émile Benveniste, and Ann Banfield. This article investigates the temporal 
constitution of literary narratives from a perspective of the biological evolution of Human 
cognition. 
My analysis begins with Hamburger’s most disputed claim that in epic fiction the past tense 
»loses its grammatical function of designating what is past« and proceeds by testing a derived 
hypothesis against a cross-cultural sample of (mostly oral) folklore. Hamburger denied any 
temporal relation between the speaker and that which he speaks of, assuming instead a fictitious 
neverland in which the narrated events are situated and to which the preterit refers. If 
Hamburger’s model is correct, so the derived hypothesis goes, then the use of past tense in 
fictional narratives is merely a cultural convention, and different narrative traditions should 
expose different conventions. Indeed it can be shown that in other cultures stories are told in 
the present tense, in infinitive verb forms, or in forms indicating abstractness or remoteness. It 
can be followed that Hamburger was right at least in presuming that reference to the past is not 
a necessary constituent of verbal storytelling. 
Actually, instead of referring to the past, the epic preterit rather seems to indicate a change in 
the modality of speaking, thus adhering to the category of grammatical mood rather than tense. 
In some languages of oral cultures, however, this presumed mood shows up instead as a way of 
indicating the source of information. This kind of source information – fully grammaticalized 
in a quarter of the world’s languages – is called ›evidentiality‹ by linguists. In a phylogenetic 
perspective on the evolution of cognition, source information only becomes necessary with 
extended inferential and communicative capabilities and may thus have emerged as a cognitive 
tool in early humans when entering the ›cognitive niche‹. Evidentiality markers in language 
may thus be the linguistic reflex of a very ancient cognitive scope category in the innate 
architecture of the human mind, one which served to separate first-hand experience from 
reported knowledge. In oral storytelling, evidentiality is marked not only by specific verb forms 
but also by specific formulas (›they say‹/›it is said‹), intonations, or rhetorical devices. From 
this perspective, the phenomenon observed by Hamburger and others can be said to originate 
in the beginning of Tradition – that is, of verbal transmission of cultural knowledge. 
My hypothesis is that literary narratives in literate cultures still use this ancient cognitive scope 
operator of ›tradition‹ when employing the epic preterit. Admittedly, in literate cultures it often 
suffices to put »A novel by« on the title page in order to signal the categorical otherness of 
narrative fiction. Yet still, authors employ additional means to evoke the atmosphere of a 
›murmuring conjuring‹ – as Thomas Mann once called it – that creates the impression of an 
objective world of tradition behind the individual story told. I point toward examples in literary 
first-person narratives, because homodiegetic narration – in contrast to Hamburger’s classical 
case of heterodiegetic narration – shows a continuous spatio-temporal relation between speaker

and that which he speaks of and thus requires additional means or efforts to signal a break 
between the ordinary world of first-hand experience and the world of the literary. 
Since Hamburger once treated the epic preterit as a signal of fictionality, I briefly discuss the 
notion of fiction in the last paragraphs of my paper. I consider ›fictionality‹ to be a late cultural 
concept in literate societies that is not identical with the cognitive category of ›tradition‹ but is 
ultimately made possible by the existence of the latter.

The Paradox of Fiction – A Brief Introduction into Recent

Exactly forty years ago, readers of the Journal of Philosophy first heard about a certain guy 
called Charles who was sitting in his chair watching a movie. At some point during the film, a 
green slime started approaching the camera. Charles’ pulse quickened, his palms started to 
sweat, and he clutched the arms of his chair. After the movie, he reported that he was really 
afraid of the slime. Apart from the observation that both monsters and moviegoers have come 
a long way since the seventies, nothing about this case seems to be particularly interesting. 
Charles, however, has become famous – at least among philosophers, aestheticians and literary 
critics. The reason is, of course, Kendall L. Walton’s seminal paper »Fearing Fictions« in which 
he both doubts that Charles’ judgement about his affective state is correct and raises the general 
question of whether affective responses which are directed towards fictional entities (we will 
call them »fictional emotions« from now on) are structurally identical to emotions directed 
towards real entities (cf. Walton 1978). Together with Colin Radford’s article »How Can We 
Be Moved by the Fate of Anna Karenina?« Walton’s paper led to a debate about fictional 
emotions that still goes on today, and in particular about a problem which is often referred to 
by the term »paradox of fiction«. The paradox is constituted by three apparently plausible 
premises that cannot be conjointly true at the same time: 
(1) We have (genuine/rational) emotions towards fictional entities. 
(2) To have an (genuine/rational) emotion towards an entity, we must believe that this entity 
exists. 
(3) We do not believe that fictional entities exist. 
This special issue presents a collection of essays which deal with this paradox, or, more 
generally, with problems surrounding fictional emotions. In our brief introduction, we want to 
pose some questions that we think are still up for debate, survey recent developments in the 
discussion, and outline areas of research that are currently developing. 
The focus of the debate has witnessed a clear and considerable shift since Radford’s and 
Walton’s first contributions. The central reason is simple: Walton and Radford are cognitivists 
in the sense that, for them, emotions involve judgements or beliefs. My anger at somebody, 
they would argue, involves the judgement or belief that I have been wronged by that person. 
For cognitivists like Walton and Radford, premise (2) is prima facie just as plausible and 
difficult to reject as premises (1) and (3). They are dealing with a real paradox, and finally 
dissolve it by rejecting premise (1). 
Today, however, there are only a few proponents of cognitivism left. Most philosophers, literary 
critics and psychologists advocate, for example, appraisal theories (cf. Frijda 1986; 
Scherer/Schorr/Johnstone 2001; Robinson 2005), perceptual theories (cf. Döring 2003; Prinz 
2004; Kauppinen 2013; Tappolet 2016), feeling theories (cf. Goldie 2009) or construal theories

(cf. de Sousa 1987; Roberts 2003). According to these theories, emotions do not involve 
judgements or beliefs. For them, premise (2) is simply false. The consequence is as obvious as 
radical: there is no paradox of fiction, and there has never been. 
Does that mean that the debate is over? Should we cease talking about a paradox that doesn’t 
even exist? We do not think so, and neither do the contributors to our volume. Why not? Even 
if one supposes that there is no paradox (anymore), one can still learn much about the various 
other topics that surround the discussion of the paradox. This point has been made by Robert 
Stecker (2011, 308), among many others: »The paradox of fiction has been a valuable tool for 
exploring the nature of both imaginative and emotional responses to fiction.« In accordance 
with Stecker, we think that there were, and there still are, a number of questions raised in the 
context of the paradox of fiction (some of them already posed by Walton and Radford) which 
are of equally vital interest for cognitivists and non-cognitivists. 
One of these crucial and complex questions, initially raised by Walton, concerns the nature of 
fictional emotions. Whether fictional emotions are genuine emotions or not depends on the 
definition of the term »genuine emotion«. Emotions are typically considered to be mental 
phenomena associated with a cognitive base, action tendencies, bodily changes, affectivity, and 
evaluation: A person who is afraid of a lion in front of them will typically have certain beliefs 
about the lion (e. g. that the lion is in front of them), they will have a tendency to act or behave 
in a certain way (e. g. to flee from the lion), they might have an increased heart rate and tensed 
muscles, they will have a certain feeling of unpleasantness and evaluate the lion as dangerous. 
Whether these features are components or mere companions of emotions is a hotly debated 
question, and the corresponding answer will have an impact on the evaluation of fictional 
emotions. 
Additionally, there are differences between the fear of a real entity like a lion and the fear of a 
fictional entity like a dragon with respect to the aforementioned features which need to be 
considered: fictional emotions are not accompanied with or do not entail beliefs or judgments 
about the real world (we do not believe that the dragon is in front of us) and therefore differ 
from emotions directed at real entities with respect to the cognitive base. Moreover, we do not 
evaluate the dragon as dangerous to us. Also, fictional emotions do not lead to specific actions, 
namely actions directed at the object of the emotion like fleeing from the dragon or kissing the 
heroine. Further features of difference concerning the affectivity are the intensity and duration 
of fictional emotions, and that they are out of character with respect to the bearer’s usual or 
everyday emotional responses. Only bodily changes do not seem to differ in the fictional and 
the non-fictional case: We can observe tensed muscles and increased heart rate in both those 
who are afraid of a real lion and those who are afraid of a fictional dragon. Since the assumed 
differences on the one hand and a general theory of emotions on the other hand are still up for 
debate, there remains a lot to be said about the question of whether fictional emotions are 
genuine emotions. 
Another important question, originally raised by Radford, concerns the rationality of fictional 
emotions. Fictional emotions seem to have a lot in common with emotional responses we 
typically evaluate to be irrational. In both cases, there is a certain tension between the emotional 
response and the evaluation of the object of the emotion. Just as a lot of people are afraid of 
spiders despite their belief that spiders aren’t dangerous (at least if they live in northern Europe), 
readers and viewers don’t believe that fictional monsters are dangerous, and yet they respond 
affectively. Nevertheless, the two cases are not completely similar: Since fictional monsters are 
dangerous in the world of fiction, fearing them seems to be at least a more rational response 
than, for example, being jealous of them. It remains an open question, however, how (or even 
if) a true belief or judgement about the world of fiction could justify a fictional emotion.

A related topic in need of further elaboration concerns the question of why we are moved by 
fiction. What is especially puzzling is the odd difference between our emotional reactions to 
real-life and to fictional situations, also mentioned by Radford: When someone tells us a 
moving story about a dog she once had who was run over, we certainly pity the dog and the 
narrator as well. But if we discover that the whole story was made up, our emotional reaction 
of pity would immediately stop. Readers and viewers of fiction, in contrast, know right from 
the beginning that the fictional characters do not exist and that the whole story is made up – and 
yet this does not prevent them from reacting affectively. Both those who claim that fictional 
emotions are quasi-emotions and those who claim that fictional emotions are genuine emotions 
have to explain these different effects of the negative existential belief in the fictional and the 
non-fictional scenario: Why does the emotional reaction in the non-fictional scenario stop 
although it persists in the fictional scenario? Or against the background of the assumption of 
quasi-emotions: Why do genuine emotions not turn into quasi-emotions and persist as such in 
the non-fictional scenario? Why does a negative existential belief in the fictional scenario not 
prevent any emotional reaction, whether these reactions are categorised as genuine or non-
genuine emotions? To explain why readers and viewers are moved by fiction, a theory about 
the psychological processes that take place when we read fictional stories or watch fictional 
films is necessary. Furthermore, it is questionable whether the above-mentioned example works 
with any kind of emotional reaction. It seems true that the sadness caused by a story about a 
dog which was run over by a car does not persist once we are informed that the story was just 
made up. But what about a case in which we are amused by a funny story about a dog stealing 
a sandwich? One could argue that the affective state of being amused would probably not stop 
(at least not as abruptly) if we found out that the story was just a made-up joke. This example 
leads to the question of whether emotions of different kinds, like fear and amusement, need to 
be approached differently, in particular with respect to fictionality. 
Several papers in this volume take up these open questions or use the ongoing debate about the 
paradox of fiction as a point of departure for their discussion of related topics in the area of 
fictional emotions. Essays collected here concern themselves with our appreciation of fiction 
(Ìngrid Vendrell Ferran), the difference between our real-life and fiction-based empathic 
reactions (Anja Berninger), desires about fictional states of affairs (Eva Maria Düringer) and 
the relation of emotions towards fictional entities and towards situations of the reader’s life 
(Christoph Demmerling). 
Another reason for our continued interest in the paradox of fiction is the observation that there 
are some specific areas of research which are currently developing, or have been neglected 
until recently. Researchers working in these fields have been encountering entirely new 
problems that might shed new light on some »old questions« and that have yet to be addressed. 
Think, for example, about videogames: To what extent do they challenge the apparent truism 
that readers or viewers cannot interact with fictional characters? Are emotional reactions to 
characters in videogames different from emotional reactions to characters in traditional fiction? 
In the context of our volume, Nele van de Mosselaer takes up these and related questions and 
ponders the ramifications of a potential paradox of interactive fiction. Benjamin Gittel focusses 
his attention on the special case of a paradox of fiction for moods, while Frank Zipfel considers 
the broader paradox of mimesis that deals not only with emotional reactions to fiction but with 
emotional reactions to representations of objects of emotions in general. 
We conclude our brief introduction with a comprehensive bibliography of research literature 
on the paradox of fiction. The term »comprehensive« has to be taken with a grain of salt. We 
concentrate on the »modern debate« that started with Radford and do not consider any literature 
that was published before 1975. Of course, there are important predecessors, and the historical 
dimension of the debate has been much neglected until now. Furthermore, we listed only works

(in English or German) which placed their main focus on the paradox of fiction. There are many 
books on related topics that include a small section about the paradox. Since we wanted our 
bibliography to have a strong focus on the core issues of the paradox of fiction, our decision
