    The psychological effect of compensation on decent work dimensions: a research on public and private school teachers in Turkey

    Purpose: The purpose of this work is to examine the psychological impact of adequate compensation, which is one of the dimensions of Decent Work Scale (DWS) evaluated within the psychology of work theory (PWT), on other dimensions of DWS in teachers working in public and private schools in Turkey. Design/methodology/approach: In this study, DWS developed by Duffy et al. was used. In total, 175 private school teachers and 216 public school teachers participated in the study. The data were analyzed with LISREL 8.7 and SPSS 23.0 package programs. Findings: Considering the structural equation model formed by the sub-dimensions of the DWS and the path diagrams related to the model, it was seen that the “adequate compensation” dimension made a significant difference in “access to health services” on both public and private school teachers. In private school teachers, there is a significant relationship between the dimension of adequate compensation and “access to healthcare”, “physically and interpersonally safe working conditions”, “free time and rest” and “organizational values that complement family and social values”. However, a significant relationship was not found between the variables other than “access to healthcare” in public school teachers. According to the results of the “Independent Sample T-Test”, there is a significant mean difference between the perceptions of teachers working in public and private schools. When this difference is examined, it was seen that teachers working in public schools have a higher level of good job perception than teachers working in private schools. Research limitations/implications: DWS is a newly developed scale and has been used in a limited number of studies. It is a scale open to be developed and used with different sample groups. Originality/value: Application of DWS to teachers working in Turkey is one of the fundamental features that distinguish this study from other studies in this area. In addition, the evaluation of the psychological effects of the adequate compensation dimension, which is an important study factor, on the other dimensions of DWS adds originality to the study. It is predicted that this research will fill the deficiency in the relevant literature

    Development and validation of an industry 4.0 adaptation potential scale (4iraps)

    The aim of this study was to develop a scale that can measure the potential of adapting to Industry 4.0, which refers to the fourth industrial revolution described as a combination of the innovation of various digital technologies rapidly developed in recent years. In addition, the reliability and validity of the Industry 4.0 Adaptation Potential (4IRAPS) is demonstrated. This research was conducted in two stages of a pilot and a main study. The data was collected from 174 participants enrolled in technical and management departments at the graduate and associate degree levels of two different universities. A 50-item questionnaire concerning Industry 4.0 prepared by experts experienced in this field was applied to the participants. As a result of a factor analysis, 30 items and 11 subscales with low a factor load and reliability level were removed from the questionnaire. The reliability and validity of 4IRAPS were verified by” the analyses via PLS-SEM. Finally, the remaining four sub-dimensions referring to Industry 4.0 were labelled as interested, effort for adaptation, readiness, and pessimism. This study developed the first scale of the industry 4.0 adaptation potential. The scale consists of four sub-dimensions and 17 items. It was determined that this scale was statistically reliable and valid

    Dünya genelinde olduğu gibi Türkiye'de de hızlı nüfus artışı karşısında gıda maddelerindeki üretimin yetersiz kalması, tarımsal faaliyetlerin ve üretimin artırılarak ekonomik yönden gelişimin sağlanması ve sulama ağının geliştirilmesi gerekliliğini gözler önüne sermektedir. Tarımsal üretimin arttırılabilmesi için öncelikle tarım arazilerindeki parçalanmayı ve bozulmayı önleyici yasal düzenlemelerin uygulanması, tarımsal alanların ekonomik anlamda genişletilmesi, kırsal alandan göçün engellenmesi, kırsal ve kentsel alanlar arasındaki sosyal, kültürel ve ekonomik farkın kapatılması gerekmektedir. Bu bağlamda, arazi toplulaştırma çalışmaları büyük önem arz etmektedir. 7 Şubat 2019 tarih ve 30679 sayılı Resmi Gazete'de yayınlanan Arazi Toplulaştırması ve Tarla İçi Geliştirme Hizmetleri Uygulama Yönetmeliği'nde; "tarım arazilerinin doğal ve yapay etkilerle bozulmasının ve parçalanmasının önlenmesi, parçalanmış arazilerin ise doğal özellikleri, kullanım bütünlüğü ve mülkiyet hakları gözetilerek birden fazla arazi parçasının birleştirilip ekonomik, ekolojik ve daha işlevsel yeni parsellerin oluşturulması, bu parsellerin arazi özellikleri ve alanı değerlendirilerek kullanım şekillerinin belirlenmesi ve arazi gelişimi hizmetlerinin sağlanması" şeklinde tanımlanan arazi toplulaştırması, günümüzde Devlet Su İşleri (DSİ) Genel Müdürlüğü tarafından yürütülmektedir. Bu çalışmada, DSİ tarafından yürütülen arazi toplulaştırma projelerinin işlem adımları açıklanmış, projelerin uygulanması aşamasında karşılaşılan sorunlar teknik, idari ve hukuki yönden (mülkiyet yönünden) irdelenmiş ve belirlenen sorunlara çözüm önerileri geliştirilmiştir

    A new univariate deformation analysis approach considering displacements as model errors

    In Conventional Deformation Analysis (CDA), at least two different epochs are adjusted by using the Least Squares Estimation (LSE) method and compared statistically. The effect of the geometry of the network is an essential part of the adjustment model and the LSE method smears the effects of the displaced point over the other nondisplaced points. In this study, to remove these spoiling effects and to increase the reliability of the deformation analysis, a new approach is introduced. This approach depends on the analysis of the differences between observations of the two epochs, and also considers the principles of the model error approach. All possible combinations of the differences of the observations are considered as model errors in Gauss-Markov model and the estimated model error for the combination, that has the smallest variance, is compared with a critical value to answer the question whether it is significant or not. To compare the results of the new approach with the CDA, the Monte Carlo simulation technique and mean success rate are used in a leveling network. As a consequence, according to the simulation results, the new approach is better than the CDA by 7.6% and 9.7% for one and two displaced points, respectively, when the deformation network is designed as a subnetwork

    The extended gamma distribution with regression model and applications

    This paper introduces a new extension of the gamma distribution, named as a new extended gamma distribution, via mixture representation of xgamma and gamma distributions. The statistical properties of the proposed distribution are derived such as moment generating and characteristic functions, variance, skewness, and kurtosis measures, Lorenz curve, and mean residual life function. The maximum likelihood, parametric bootstrap, method of moments, least squares, and weighted least squares estimation methods are considered to obtain the unknown model parameters. The finite sample performance of estimation methods is discussed via a simulation study. Using the proposed distribution, we propose a new regression model for the right-skewed response variable as an alternative to the gamma regression model. Two real data sets are analyzed to convince the readers for the usefulness of the proposed model

    Uniform convergent modified weak Galerkin method for convection-dominated two-point boundary value problems

    We propose and analyze a modified weak Galerkin finite element method (MWG-FEM) for solving singularly perturbed problems of convection-dominated type. The proposed method is constructed over piecewise polynomials of degree k >= 1 on interior of each element and piecewise constant on the boundary of each element. The present method is parameter-free and has less degrees of freedom compared to the classical weak Galerkin finite element method. The method is shown uniformly convergent for small perturbation parameters. An uniform convergence rate of O((N(-1)ln N)(k)) in the energy-like norm is established on the piecewise uniform Shishkin mesh, where N is the number of elements. Various numerical examples are presented to confirm the theoretical results. Moreover, we numerically confirm that the proposed method has the optimal order error estimates of O(N-(k+1)) in a discrete L-2-norm and converges at superconvergence order of O((N(-1)ln N)(2k)) in the discrete L-infinity-norm

    Experiences of nurses diagnosed with COVID-19 in Turkey: A qualitative study

    Aims This study examined the experiences of nurses diagnosed with COVID-19 under the guidance of Meleis' Transitions Theory. Background Nurses, who make up the majority of healthcare professionals, are struggling with COVID-19, a silent war, on the front lines at the cost of their lives. The pandemic has deeply affected nurses' lives, and hundreds of nurses around the world have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and died. Methods A descriptive qualitative approach was used in this study. Data were collected from 18 nurses who experienced COVID-19 symptoms, with a semistructured interview form prepared based on Meleis' Transitions Theory concepts. Interview transcripts were analyzed using a thematic analysis technique. The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research checklist was used in the study. Results The six themes that emerged in the data analysis were emotions experienced when nurses tested positive for COVID-19, emotions experienced during the quarantine process, posttraumatic growth, methods of coping with COVID-19, nursing care after COVID-19 treatment, and metaphors about COVID-19. Conclusion This study showed that being diagnosed with COVID-19 caused nurses to have both positive (posttraumatic growth, empathic and psychosocial nursing care) and negative experiences (fear of death, stigma, etc.). They tried to cope with adverse situations due to COVID-19 by obtaining social support, thinking positively, and engaging in domestic activities. Implications for nursing and health policy To reduce COVID-19-related physical and psychological symptoms, appropriate policies should be developed for effective and rapid nursing workforce planning, extending the time allocated for postdiagnosis treatment, updating infection control and prevention guides, training nurses, and providing ongoing psychosocial counseling services that nurses can access

    The reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the apraxia screen of TULIA in multiple sclerosis patients

    Purpose The study was aimed to analyze the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Apraxia Screen of TULIA (T-AST). Methods A total of 112 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) were included in the study. T-AST tasks were performed once while recording with a video camera. Two physiotherapists scored T-AST, independently. Rater(1) performed a second assessment of apraxia with AST one week later. The disability was evaluated by Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS). Cognitive assessment was carried out with Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Depression was evaluated with Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D). Multiple Sclerosis International Quality of Life (MusiQoL) was used to assess the quality of life. In addition, fatigue was evaluated with Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS). Results The mean age of the patients was 42.3 +/- 11.0 years. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the rater(1)'s and rater(2)'s evaluation was 0.820 and 0.800, respectively. ICC score of the intra-rater reliability was 0.960. ICC score of the inter-rater reliability was 0.971. The Spearman correlation coefficients between T-AST and MMSE, EDSS, MusiQoL, HAM-D, FSS were low to excellent, respectively (r = 0.863; p < 0.001, r = -0.768; p < 0.001, r = -0.560; p < 0.001, r = -0.393, p < 0.001, r = -0.324, p < 0.001). Conclusion The Turkish version of the AST is a reliable and valid tool for assessing upper limb apraxia in patients with MS

    Investigation of the performances of advanced image classification-based ground filtering approaches for digital terrain model generation

    The majority of the ground filtering techniques proposed so far use several user-defined parameter values. Since no standard protocols exist to define these parameters, obtaining the optimum filtering performance is very hard, especially in large-extent areas with abrupt topography changes. This, of course, reveals the necessity of some more efficient strategies to ease the ground filtering process in such areas. Utilizing classified images for ground filtering purpose may be of help to achieve this. Hence, this study, for the first time in the literature, investigated the performances of the state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms maximum likelihood (ML), artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machines (SVM), and random forest (RF) in ground filtering of a UAS-based point cloud. The used approaches were based on the assignment of the points corresponding to the ground-related classes to the ground class. Evaluations showed that the SVM-based ground filtering approach achieved the optimum filtering result. The SVM-, ML-, RF-, and ANN-based ground filtering methods achieved the total errors of 13.2%, 16.4%, 19.6%, and 21.9% in the test site, respectively

    A systematic review of studies on classroom management from 1980 to 2019

    This review study aims to reveal trends in classroom management research by employing a two-stage analysis of articles indexed by the Web of Science. The bibliometric analysis results indicated the descriptive statistics of the articles, the most productive countries and authors, the most popular articles, journals, and keywords, annual scientific production, growth of the top three journals by year, and the pioneer and influencer researchers in classroom management. The content analysis results showed the changes in the selection of methods, purposes, and participants for nearly three decades of classroom management research. This review concluded that interest in classroom management has been constantly growing, but research on classroom management is not prevalent worldwide
