The possible protective effects of some Hypericum species against cyclophosphamide based on cell toxicity
Siklofosfamid (CP*) kanser tedavisinde kullanılan en yaygın ilaçlardan biri olmasına karşın, kanser hücrelerinin dışında özellikle Kemik iliği (Kİ), lökosit (WBC), eritrosit (RBC) ve trombosit (PLT) üzerine olumsuz etkileri olduğu bilinmektedir. Son zamanlarda CP* kaynaklı hücre hasarına karşı birçok bitki özütleri kullanılarak bu hasar giderilmeye çalışılmaktadır. Bu bilgiler ışığında; CP* kaynaklı hücre hasarına karşı bazı Hypericum L. (Hyp) türlerinin de etkili olabileceği düşünülmüştür. Bu çalışmada; Sıçan Kİ'yi ve kanında, tek doz intraperitoneal (ip) olarak 50 mg/kg uygulanan CP* hasarına karşı antioksidan özelliği bilinen 3 farklı Hyp türüne ait (H. perforatum L. (HP), H. origanifolium Willd. (HO), H. montbretii Spach. (HM)) yaprak metanol ekstrelerinin (sırasıyla HPE, HOE ve HME) 50 mg/kg dozları oral olarak günde bir kez olmak koşulu ile 5 gün boyunca uygulanmıştır. Sonuç olarak; CP* uygulamasından kaynaklanan özellikle Kİ'yi baskılanması (Myelosupresyon) ve kanda lökosit sayısında azalmaya (Lökopeni) karşı Hyp türlerine ait yaprak metanol esktreleri (özellikle sırasıyla HOE, HME ve HPE) önemli etkileri bulunmuştur.Although it is one of the most common drugs using in cancer treatment, cyclophosphamide (CP*) is known with its harmfull effects on bone marrow (KI), leukocyte (WBC), erythrocyte (RBC) and thrombocyte (PLT). Recenty, it has been used many plant extracts so that it can be eliminated the damages caused by CP* with the help of this information, It is thought that some Hypericum L. (Hyp) species may also be effective against CP* induced cell damage. In this study; ın rats KI and blood, 50 mg / kg given intraperitoneally (ip) as a single dose of CP* against 3 different Hyp species with known antioxidant properties (H. perforatum L. (HP), H. origanifolium Willd. (HO) and H. montbretii Spach. (HM)) doses of 50 mg / kg of leaf metanol extracts (HPE, HOE and HME, respectively) were given orally once a day in 5 days. As a conclusion; leaf metanol extracts belong to Hyp species (especially HOE, HME and HPE, respectively) were found to have crucial effects against the supresion of KI (Myelosuppression) and decrease in the number of leukocytes (Leucopenia) in the blood caused by the induced-CP

An automated approach for extracting forest inventory data from individual trees using a handheld mobile laser scanner
Many dendrometric parameters have been estimated by light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology over the last two decades. Handheld mobile laser scanning (HMLS), in particular, has come into prominence as a cost-effective data collection method for forest inventories. However, most pilot studies were performed in domesticated landscapes, where the environmental settings were far from those presented by (near )natural forest ecosystems. Besides, these studies consisted of numerous data processing steps, which were challenging when employed by manual means. Here we present an automated approach for deriving key inventory data using the HMLS method in natural forest areas. To this end, many algorithms (e.g., cylinder/circle/ellipse fitting) and machine learning models (e.g., random forest classifier) were used in the data processing stage for estimation of the tree diameter at breast height (DBH) and the number of trees. The estimates were then compared against the reference data obtained by field measurements from six forest sample plots. The results showed that correlations between the estimated and reference DBHs were very strong at the plot level (r=0.83-0.99, p> hard plotso << located at rocky terrains with dense undergrowth and irregular trunks. We concluded that area-based forest inventories might hugely benefit from the HMLS method, particularly in "easy plots". By improving the algorithmic performances, the accuracy levels can be further increased by future research
Synthesis, spectroscopic, and photophysicochemical behavior of Zn(II) and Mg(II) phthalocyanine– chalcone conjugates
Phthalonitrile derivatives (8, 9, and 10) bearing different chalcone groups and their zinc(II) (ZnPcs) (8a, 9a, and 10a) and magnesium(II) (MgPcs) (8b, 9b, and 10b) complexes were prepared. The new compounds (5, 8–10, 8a–10a, and 8b–10b) were characterized by a combination of spectroscopic techniques, such as FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR (for 5, 8, 9, and 10), UV–Vis (for metallophthalocyanines), and MALDI-TOF mass spectra, and by elemental analysis (5, 8, 9, and 10). The aggregation behavior and photophysical (fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes) and photochemical (singlet oxygen and photodegradation quantum yields) properties of different chalcone-substituted peripheral ZnPcs (8a, 9a, and 10a) and MgPcs (8b, 9b, and 10b) were investigated in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) to determine whether they are photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy (PDT) applications. The peripheral tetra-substituted MgPc (9b) showed longer lifetime than other compounds and unsubstituted ZnPc. The tetra-substituted ZnPc (9b) produced higher fluorescence quantum yield than the unsubstituted ZnPc and its chalcone-substituted counterparts. The ZnPcs (8a, 9a, and 10a) and MgPcs (8b, 9b, and 10b) showed low singlet oxygen production, but they showed quite high photostability, except MgPc 10b
Comparison of bilingual students' self-efficacy toward Turkish speaking skills with respect to socio-economic status
Equity in education refers to the accessibility of educational opportunities by the students from disadvantaged groups in the society as well as the other groups. Socio-economic status is evidently one of the most dominant factors defining advantaged and disadvantaged social groups. On the other hand, bilingualism may either be an educational advantage or a disadvantage in different conditions. This study is a causal-comparative survey aiming to investigate the relationship between bilingual students' self-efficacy toward Turkish speaking skills and the socio-economic status of their families. The study was conducted on 1763 bilingual students studying in middle schools located in several districts in Izmir where bilingual people commonly live. Participants' self-efficacy toward Turkish speaking skills was measured by Bilingual Students' Self-efficacy toward Turkish Speaking Skills Scale including 10 Likerttype items. Participants' socioeconomic status was measured by a series of items about their parents' educational and occupational status and family income. Data were analyzed by using Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA and the findings showed that there are significant differences in bilingual students' self-efficacy toward Turkish speaking skills between low and high socioeconomic status and between low and medium socioeconomic status
RhoA/ROCK-1 signaling pathway and oxidative stress in coronary artery disease patients
Objective: The aim of this clinical study is to determine the depression and anxiety levels in coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery patients in the pre and postoperative periods.
Methods: This clinical prospective study was done with 65 patients. Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI) and Beck's Anxiety Inventory (BAI) tests were performed in patients who had a diagnosis of coronary artery disease and were awaiting CABG surgery. These patients presented characteristic symptoms of anxiety and depression and BDI and BAI tests are important to assess these symptoms.
Results: We found out that depression and anxiety levels were higher in the postoperative than in the preoperative period (P0.05).
Conclusion: We suggest that good management of the psychological condition of cardiac surgery candidates, as well as post-bypass patients, will improve quality of life and cardiovascular outcomes in these patients
Prioritizing of industrial wastewater management processes using an integrated AHP–CoCoSo model: comparative and sensitivity analyses
The increase in individuals’ consumption and needs and the rapid development of technology result in different types of industrial wastewaters. A vast majority of industrial wastewaters are harmful to humans and other animals, as well as the environment. This study aimed to identify the priorities for the industrial wastewater management processes based on multiple contradictory criteria. For this purpose, the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and combined compromise solution (CoCoSo) techniques were used. Sensitivity analyses were conducted by changing the criteria weights, and comparative analyses were conducted using the Multi-Objective Optimization on the Basis of Ratio Analysis, the Combinative Distance-Based Assessment, and the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution. Although the criteria weights were obtained using the AHP, alternative rankings were determined using the CoCoSo. Within the scope of the study, alternatives were determined for industrial wastewater management based on four groups—physical, chemical, biological, and thermal—that were further divided into 3 main and 14 subcriteria. Although the AHP method revealed that the most important criterion was operating costs, the membrane processes, electrochemical oxidation, membrane bioreactor and supercritical water oxidation/gasification were determined to be priorities for the physical, chemical, biological, and thermal alternatives, respectively, which provide high efficiency and comply with environmental impact criteria. As a result, it is suggested that membrane bioreactor is the top ranking alternative, followed by electrochemical oxidation
Decontamination effects of lemon peel and mint leaf extracts on salad vegetables
Salad vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals and fibre. However, some food-borne diseases are associated with the consumption of this type of raw food. Effective disinfection processes are therefore important to obtain it microbiologically safe for consumption. This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial properties of the essential oils and extracts of fresh lemon (Citrus lemon L.) peel as well as fresh and dried mint (Mentha spicata L.) leaves on certain bacteria associated with salad vegetables. Lemon peel and mint extracts used for the disinfection process were obtained by the Soxhlet extraction method while their essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation using a Clevenger-type apparatus. Study results showed that the most effective disinfectant regarding total microbial counts was mint essential oil with a reduction of 7.56 log CFU.g(-1). For Escherichia coli ATCC 25933, lemon peel Clevenger extract was determined to be the most effective with a reduction of 7.37 log CFU.g(-1). The disinfectant applications statistically significantly reduced total microbial counts on salad vegetables (p < 0.05). The results of the study suggested that natural extracts and/or essential oils can be used as effective disinfectants
Varijabilnost populacija obiČnog bora (Pinus sylvestris l.) u Turskoj prema morfoloŠkim obiljeŽjima iglica
In the present study, needle variation of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L., Pinaceae) populations in Turkey was investigated. From selected eight populations, a total of 1314 needles belonging to 206 trees were examined. Four morphological needle traits were measured and analyzed to describe the population diversity and differentiation. Analyzed morphological traits showed significant variability. The trees within populations differ significantly in all analyzed needle characteristics, while the differences between populations were significant for the three of four studied characteristics. Present findings revealed that needle length, needle width and the ratio of needle length to needle width showed clinal variation in response to altitudinal gradients. Populations from higher altitudes were characterized with the smaller and wider needles as compared to the populations from lower altitudes. The results of this study could be valuable baseline data for the development of more efficient management plans for this forest tree species
Effects of fertilizers and earthworms on morphological and nutritional attributes of Punica granatum and reproduction of Aphis punicae
The efects of soil invertebrates (earthworms) and AM fungus fertilizers were observed alone and together on the growth
of Punica granatum and on the reproduction of herbivores (Aphis punicae). Pomegranate plants were grown individually in
pots containing sandy, silty, and clay soil. Plants were grown in soil containing: a) no added fauna, b) earthworms, c) AM
fungus fertilizers, and d) AM fungus fertilizers and earthworms. As a result of the study, the highest number of shoots were
observed in worm + fertilizer applied treatments and the lowest in the only worm used treatments. There was a signifcant
diference between control (Pk) and worm + fertilizer (Psg) groups in shoot number (P<0.05). The greatest height growth
was observed in worm applied treatment while the lowest was observed in control. Control, worm and worm + fertilizer
groups difered signifcantly in terms of salinity content. Plant height negatively, but shoot numbers positively correlated
with soil phosphorous content (P<0.05). There was a positive correlation between shoot numbers and K2O contents of treatment group soils. Aphid performance was strongly infuenced by the presence of worm + fertilizer (Psg). In the presence of
only worms (Ps), the numbers of adult and juvenile aphids were signifcantly increased at the frst and second generations.
Aphid death rate is the highest in worm + fertilizer (Psg) and lowest in the control treatment (Pk) for the frst generation.
These results suggest that diferent soil types and treatments afect plant growth parameters positively but do not sufciently
afect aphid population changes
