Predictors of parenting stress in parents of children with cancer
Purpose: In the present study, we investigated the parenting stress experienced by parents of children with cancer and the influencing factors. Method: This was a cross-sectional and descriptive correlational study that consisted of parents of 136 children in the age group of 0–18 years who were followed up for cancer in the outpatient clinics and services of a university hospital in Turkey. Parenting Stress Index, Burden Interview, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Marital Life Satisfaction Scale, and Ways of Coping Questionnaire were used to collect the data. Results: No statistically significant difference was found between the parenting stress mean scores and gender of the parents of children with cancer (t = −0.350; P = 0.727). The results of the present study showed that the economic status (t = −4.16; P = 0.000), parents’ physical (t = 3.606; P = 0.000) and mental health status after the child is diagnosed (t = 5.647; P = 0.000), accompanying mental health problems of the child (t = 2.567; P = 0.011), and diagnosis of children at a young age (t = −2.776; P = 0.006) increased the parenting stress of the parents. Conclusions: Nursing interventions can reduce parental stress by providing sufficient care and support during the disease process
Efficacy of oral transmucosal administrations of phenylbutazone for postoperative analgesia in dogs undergoing ovariohysterectomy
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy and analgesic duration of a single dose of Phenylbutazone (PBZ) administered by the oral transmucosal (OTM) or via the intravenous (IV) route immediately before induction of anesthesia in dogs undergoing elective ovohysterectomy (OVH). Twenty-seven sexually intact female dogs referred for OVH procedure from a local shelter at regular intervals over 3 months, were included in the study. The dogs were administered PBZ and the placebo on the basis of their respective treatment group (20 mg/kg, IV; 20 mg/kg via OTM administration; 1.75 ml/kg IV 0.9% NaCl) before administration of xvlazine. Throughout the study, vital signs were measured at baseline (T-0, before administration of PBZ) and then at 5 (T-1), 10 (T-2), 15 (T-3), 20 (T-4), 25 (T-5), and 30 (T-6) minutes intraoperatively. Postoperative pain was assessed at 0.5, 1,2, 3, 8, and 24 hours after operation. Groups OTM and IV had significantly lower Composite Measure Pain Scale (CMPS-SF) scores (r0.05) than the control group at the 0.5, 1, 2, 3, and 8 hours postoperatively. The analgesic (carprofen) was used with all dogs. In conclusion, a single dose of PBZ administered via the OTM route before surgery provided some analgesia but was not enough on its own for the postoperative period. Additionally, PBZ administred via the OTM route did not provide a dissimilar analgesia than the IV route
Analysis of mental health symptoms and insomnia levels of intensive care nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic with a structural equation model
Background: Faced with this critical situation and directly involved in the treatment and care of COVID-19 patients, front-line healthcare workers are at high risk in terms of mental health symptoms. Aims and Objectives: To determine the stress, anxiety, depression, and insomnia levels of intensive care nurses during the pandemic with a structural equation model. Design: A multi-site survey study. Methods: The study was performed with 194 nurses working in the intensive care units of five hospitals in Istanbul in July 2020. Data were collected using the Depression Anxiety Stress-21 Scale and Insomnia Severity Index electronically. The data were evaluated with descriptive statistics in SPSS package program. In order to test the structural model and hypotheses of the research, path analysis was performed with LISREL statistical software program. A validation study for the suitability of these scales to the study sample was done by the researchers using the confirmatory factor analysis method. The study conforms to the TREND checklist. Results: In this study, the majority of the intensive care nurses had moderate to extremely severe depression (65.5%), anxiety (58.3%) and stress (72.3%) scores; in addition, 39.7% of the nurses experienced moderate or severe insomnia. Within the framework of a structural model; the effects of stress, anxiety and insomnia on depression, which is the dependent variable, were found to be statistically significant (p <.001). Conclusions: It was found that the majority of the intensive care nurses fighting COVID-19 on the front-line experienced stress, anxiety, depression and insomnia at levels ranging from moderate to extremely severe; in addition, it was determined that there is a positive relationship between stress, anxiety, insomnia and depression. Relevance to clinical practice: This study, in which we have determined the mental health symptoms and insomnia levels of intensive care nurses, who are in the front-line during the COVID-19 pandemic, constitutes the scientific basis for the effective coping strategies that the authorities will take in this subject
A new pest in Hatay province boxwood areas, Cydalima perspectalis (Walker, 1859) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae)
Türkiye'de yaklaşık bin hektarlık bir yayılış alanına sahip olan Buxus sempervirens (şimşir), Hatay ilinin
önemli bitki türlerinden biridir. Hatay ilinde önemli bir doğal şimşir alanı da Dörtyol ilçesidir. Son yıllarda
bölgede şimşirlerde görülen kurumanın kaynağı araştırılmış ve Cydalima perspectalis olduğu tespit
edilmiştir. Daha önce bu bölgede yayılışı tespit edilmemiş olan bu tür Kozlu Dere mevkiinde bu
çalışmayla literatüre girmiştir. Çalışma yapılan alanda zarar görmüş bitki örnekleri alınarak laboratuvara
getirilmiş, kültür kutularında kültüre alınan zararlı ile bulaşık bitki artıklarından erginler elde edilmiş ve
teşhisi yapılmıştır. Zararlının larva erginlerinin morfolojik ölçüm ve karakteristik özellikleri verilmiştir. C.
perspectalis’in larvalarının bölgedeki şimşirlerin yapraklarıyla beslendikleri, sürgünlerin kabuklarını
kemirerek kambiyum tabakasına zarar verdikleri tespit edilmiştir. Şimşir alanları için önemli bir zararlıya
karşı yapılan bu çalışma C. perspectalis’in Hatay ilindeki şimşir alanlarında zararlı olduğunu bildiren ilk
çalışmadır. Ayrıca çalışma ile zararlının bu bölgedeki önemi ortaya konulmuş ve mücadelesine yönelik
öneriler verilmiştir.Buxus sempervirens, one of the boxwood spices in Turkey, have a natural population of approximately
thousand hectares. Hatay province is an important province in terms of natural boxwood areas. The
source of drying seen in boxwoods in the region in recent years has been investigated and it has been
determined that Cydalima perspectalis. This species, whose distribution in this region has not been
determined before, has entered the literature with this study in Kozlu Dere locality. Samples of
damaged plants were taken in the study area and brought to the laboratory, and adults were obtained
from the pest taken in culture in culture boxes and from contaminated plant residues, and the diagnosis
was made. Morphological measurements and characteristic features of the pest's larval adults are
given. It has been determined that the larvae of C. perspectalis feed on the leaves of the boxwood in
the region and damage the cambium layer by gnawing the shells of the shoots. This study conducted
against an important pest for boxwood fields is the first to report that C. perspectalis is a pest in Hatay
province's boxwood fields. Besides, the importance of the pest in this region was revealed with the
study, and suggestions were given for its fight
Understanding stream bank erosion and deposition in Iowa, USA: A seven year study along streams in different regions with different riparian land-uses
Agricultural activities such as row-cropping and grazing, have accelerated stream bank erosion. Accelerated stream bank erosion increases nonpoint source pollutants in aquatic ecosystems, significantly degrading them. Mitigating stream bank erosion is a priority worldwide, especially in agricultural watersheds. The objective of this study was to analyze the impacts of riparian land-use management on stream bank erosion and deposition, along with analyzing its temporal and spatial patterns. The study was conducted in three regions of Iowa (central, northeast and southeast) along 30 stream reaches adjacent to seven different riparian land-uses. The riparian land-uses were riparian forest buffers, grass filters, pastures with the cattle excluded from the stream, intensive rotational grazing, rotational grazing, continuous grazing and row crop fields. Seasonal erosion and deposition data (Spring, Summer and Autumn) were collected along these reaches for 5 years and yearly for the following two years. To analyze the data, conventional statistical methods (ANOVA and Tukey's test) along with innovative techniques (percentile plots, cumulative erosion curves and bubble charts) were utilized. Based on the analysis, of this extensive in time (seven years) and large in size (1500 pins measured 17 times in three regions) field dataset, major results were obtained in regard to stream bank erosion in Iowa, USA. Stream banks exhibited high year-to-year variation in erosion and deposition showcasing the need for long-term datasets to better understand stream bank erosion and deposition. Seasonal erosion, also had high variability with Spring recording the most erosion followed by Summer and Autumn. Certain seasons exhibited high stream bank erosion indicating that managers need to focus on these seasons, to reduce erosion effectively. In addition, seasonal measurements can highlight depositional events that might be masked with annual measurements. Riparian land-uses significantly impacted stream bank erosion. Riparian forest buffers and grass filters significantly mitigated stream bank erosion while traditional agricultural practices like continuous grazing and row-crop agriculture had accelerated stream bank erosion. Finally, the percentile plots, cumulative erosion curves and bubble charts captured some stream bank responses that would have been unnoticed using conventional statistical methods, allowing decision makers, stakeholders and the general public, to support and approve measures to mitigate this environmental problem. Analysis of determinants of the high technology export in Turkey: policy recommendation for high-tech companies
This study analyzes how to improve and build high technology export strategies for high tech companies in Turkey. In this framework, oil prices and the real effective exchange rate are selected because Turkey’s export companies hugely depend on imported inputs, and oil prices are essential imported products. Besides, the real effective exchange affects the cost of the imported inputs and shows countries’ comparative advantages in foreign trade. Within this context, comprehensive different theoretical frameworks and literature reviews are presented to lead the companies’ correct way. Subsequently, an investigation is performed with Vector Autoregressive Analysis (VAR) on data covering 2016-Q1 and 2018-Q3. According to results, the real effective exchange rates and oil prices have an essential impact on the high-tech companies’ performance. Regarding the relationship between the real effective exchange rate and the high-tech exports, the J curve condition is valid. Besides, an increase in oil prices leads to expanding the high-tech exports in Turkey from the first month to the third month because the oil-exported countries are imperative partners for the Turkish export companies. Furthermore, the effects become reversed since an increase in oil prices leads to production costs. Regarding the results, the energy diversification policies, less dependent imported inputs, and expanding the market will contribute to developing the high-tech exports in Turkey
Utjecaj praha plovućca i plastifikatora na fizičko-mehanička i toplinska svojstva cementom vezanih iverica
In this study, the effect of using pumice powder and plasticizer on some properties of cementbonded particleboards (CBPBs) was investigated. Therefore, CBPBs were produced using 0 %, 10 %, 20 % and
30 % pumice powder and 0 %, 0.4 %, 0.8 %, 1.2% plasticizer. Based on test results, it was found that using pumice
powder had an important positive effect on water absorption and thickness swelling, but no effect on density. The
amount of thickness swelling decreased by 15 % with the use of 30 % pumice powder. The modulus of elasticity and
internal bond strength were generally increased by 20 % with the use of pumice powder, while modulus of rupture
and thermal insulation properties were decreased. The use of 0.4 % and 0.8 % plasticizers positively affected
the properties of board properties. The use of plasticizer had a positive effect on thermal properties. The thermal
conductivity values decreased by 18 % as the amount of plasticizer increased to 1.2 %. In this regard, the use of
plasticizers in CBPBs production is an option in terms of improving thermal properties.U radu je opisano istraživanje utjecaja praha plovućca i plastifi katora na neka svojstva cementom vezanih iverica (CBPB). Stoga su CBPB proizvedeni upotrebom 0, 10, 20 i 30 % praha plovućca te 0, 0,4, 0,8 i 1,2 % plastifi katora. Na temelju rezultata ispitivanja utvrđeno je da je prah plovućca imao znatan pozitivni učinak na upijanje vode i debljinsko bubrenje ploča, dok se gustoća ploča nije mijenjala. Upotrebom 30 % praha plovućca debljinsko se bubrenje ploča smanjilo za 15 %. Modul elastičnosti i međuslojna čvrstoća proizvedenih ploča uz upotrebu praha plovućca povećali su se za 20 %, dok su se modul loma i toplinska izolacija smanjili. Upotreba 0,4 i 0,8 % plastifi katora pozitivno je utjecala na svojstva ploča. Primjena plastifi katora pozitivno je utjecala i na toplinska svojstva ploča. Pri povećanju količine plastifi katora na 1,2 %, vrijednosti toplinske vodljivosti smanjile su se za 18 %. Stoga je upotreba plastifi katora u proizvodnji CBPB-a jedna od opcija za poboljšanje toplinskih svojstava tih ploča
Özerklik desteği ve çocukların okula bağlılığı: motivasyonun aracılık rolü
The present study examined the mediating role of motivation in the association between
autonomy support and children's school attachment. The study participants consisted
of 437 primary school students (232 girls and 205 boys) selected from six schools in a
province located in Turkey's southeast region. A hypothesized model was developed
and tested by structural equation modeling on cross-sectional data. The data were
collected via The School Attachment Scale for Children and Adolescents, The Scale for
Motivation in Education, and The Short Form of the Learning Climate Scale. The
results indicated that autonomy support had an indirect effect on school attachment
through internal motivation. Contrary to these findings, it has been determined that
neither identified external motivation nor introjected external motivation affected
attachment to the school's directly and indirectlyBu çalışmada, özerklik desteği ile çocukların okula bağlanması arasındaki ilişkide
motivasyonun aracı rolü incelenmiştir. Araştırmanın katılımcılarını, Türkiye'nin
Güneydoğu Anadolu bölgesinde yer alan bir ildeki altı okuldan seçilen 437 ilkokul
öğrencisi (232 kız ve 205 erkek) oluşturmuştur. Kesitsel veriler üzerinde yapısal eşitlik
modellemesi ile varsayımsal bir model geliştirilmiş ve test edilmiştir. Veriler Çocuklar
ve Ergenler için Okula Bağlanma Ölçeği, Eğitimde Motivasyon Ölçeği ve Öğrenme
İklimi Ölçeği Kısa Formu ile toplanmıştır. Sonuçlar, özerklik desteğinin içsel
motivasyon yoluyla okula bağlanma üzerinde dolaylı bir etkisi olduğunu göstermiştir.
Bu bulguların aksine, ne özdeşleşmiş dışsal motivasyonun ne de içselleştirilmiş dışsal
motivasyonun okula bağlanmayı doğrudan ve dolaylı olarak etkilemediği belirlenmiştir
Carpinus betulus L. (Adi Gürgen) ve Carpinus orientalis Mill. (Doğu Gürgeni) fidanlarının bazı kalite özellikleri üzerine yükseltinin etkisi
This study aims to determine some morphological characteristics of two-year-old common hornbeam
(Carpinus betulus L.) and oriental hornbeam (Carpinus orientalis Mill.) seedling and to determine the
quality classes of the seedlings according to Turkish Standards Institute’s (TSI) seedling quality
standards and sturdiness quotient values. As a study material, two-year-old common hornbeam and
oriental hornbeam seedlings, grown from seed obtained from three different altitudes as lower (0-
400 m), mid (400-800 m) and upper (800-1200 m) in the Trabzon-Maçka watershed were used. The
seedlings were grown in seedbeds in open nursery conditions of Karadeniz Technical University
Forestry Faculty Research and Application Greenhouse. Seedling length and root collar diameter were
measured in two-year-old seedlings. The sturdiness quotient was calculated with the data of the
measured seedling morphological characteristics. Quality classes were classified according to TSI
seedling quality standards determined for hornbeam seedlings. The highest mean seedling length for
common hornbeam was determined as 48.76 cm at the 3rd altitude level, while the highest mean
seedling length for oriental hornbeam was found as 38.90 cm at the 2nd altitude level. The mean root
collar diameters for were varied between 4.97-5.23 mm in common hornbeam and 4.62-5.09 mm in
oriental hornbeam. As a result of variance analysis, statistically significant differences (p<0.05) among
altitudes regarding seedling length and sturdiness quotient of common hornbeam. As for the oriental
hornbeam, it was found that statistically significant differences on 95% confidence level in terms of
seedling length and root collar diameter. In addition, significant differences between the two seedling
quality assessments and consistent results were not obtained. This shows that both TSI seedling
quality standards and the sturdiness quotient criteria are not sufficient by themselves to determine
the quality of common hornbeam and oriental hornbeam.Çalışmada iki yaşındaki adi gürgen (Carpinus betulus L.) ve doğu gürgeni (Carpinus orientalis Mill.)
fidanlarının bazı morfolojik özelliklerinin belirlenmesi ve fidanların TSE fidan kalite standartları ve
gürbüzlük indisi değerlerine göre kalite sınıflarının tespit edilmesi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışma materyali
olarak, Trabzon-Maçka havzasının üç farklı yükseltisinden (0-400 m, 400-800 m, 800-1200 m) toplanan
tohumlardan yetiştirilmiş 2+0 yaşındaki Adi gürgen ve doğu gürgeni fidanları kullanılmıştır. Fidanlar
Karadeniz Teknik Üniversitesi Orman Fakültesi Araştırma ve Uygulama Serası açık alan fidanlık
koşullarında yetiştirilmiştir. İki yaşındaki fidanlarda fidan boyu ve kök boğaz çapı değerleri ölçülmüştür.
Ölçümü yapılan fidan morfolojik karakterine ait veriler ile gürbüzlük indisi değeri hesaplanmıştır. Ayrıca,
gürgen fidanı için belirlenmiş Türk Standartları Enstitüsü (TSE) fidan kalite standartlarına göre kalite
sınıfları tasnifi yapılmıştır. Çalışma sonucunda, yükseltiler arasında en yüksek ortalama fidan boyu adi
gürgende 48.76 cm ile 3. yükseltide, doğu gürgeninde 38.90 cm ile 2. yükseltide elde edilmiştir.
Ortalama KBÇ değerleri adi gürgende 4.97-5.23 mm, doğu gürgeninde 4.62-5.09 mm arasında
değişmektedir. Varyans analizi sonucunda, yükseltiler arasında fidan boyu ve gürbüzlük indisi açısından
%95 güven düzeyinde istatistiksel olarak anlamlı farklılıklar (p<0.05) tespit edilmiştir. Doğu gürgeninde
ise fidan boyu ve kök boğazı çapı bakımından %95 güven düzeyinde istatistiksel olarak anlamlı farklılıklar
olduğu belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca, her iki fidan kalite değerlendirmesi arasında önemli farklılıklar meydana
gelmiş ve tutarlı sonuçlar elde edilmemiştir. Buda gerek TSE fidan kalite standartlarının gerekse
gürbüzlük indisi kriterlerinin adi gürgen ve doğu gürgeninin fidan kalitesini belirlemede tek başlarına
yeterli olamadığını göstermektedir
Uzaktan eğitim sürecinde oyun tabanlı bir uygulamanın ilkokul öğrencilerinin kesirleri öğrenmede öz-yeterlik ve başarılarına olan etkisi
Fractions have great importance for primary students in mathematics education and are
one of the most problematic concepts they encounter in their school life. This research
study aimed to examine the effectiveness of a game-based app (Slice Fractions) to help
students to develop their academic performance and self-efficacy in fraction skills
during distance education. A total of 142 fourth grade students from eight different
classes participated to the study. A quasi-experimental method was used to assess the
impact of the Slice Fractions game on student learning and self-efficacy of the concept
of fractions in the fourth-grade math course. The self-efficacy scale and the diagnose
test for fractions were applied to the fourth-grade students. The results showed that the
students in the game group had significantly better learning performance in fractions
than students in the non-game group. Similarly, the students in the game group had
significantly better self-efficacy in fractions than students in the non-game group.Matematik eğitiminde büyük önem taşıyan kesirler konusu ilköğretim öğrencilerinin
okul hayatlarında karşılaştıkları en problemli kavramlardan birisidir. Bu çalışmanın
amacı, uzaktan eğitim sırasında oyun tabanlı bir uygulamanın (Slice Fractions)
öğrencilerin kesirler konusundaki akademik performanslarını ve öz yeterliklerini ne
denli geliştirmelerine olanak sağladığını incelemektir. Araştırmaya sekiz farklı sınıftan
toplam 142 dördüncü sınıf öğrencisi katılmıştır. Çalışmada yarı deneysel araştırma
yöntemi kullanılarak Slice Fractions oyununun öğrencilerin kesirler kavramını
öğrenmesinde ve öz-yeterlik konusunda etkisi araştırılmıştır. Araştırmaya katılan
öğrencilere kesirler öz-yeterlik ölçeği ve kesirler başarı testi uygulanmıştır. Yapılan
analizler sonucunda, oyun grubundaki öğrencilerin, oyun oynamayan gruptaki
öğrencilere göre kesirlerde önemli ölçüde daha iyi öğrenme performansına ve daha iyi
öz-yeterliğe sahip oldukları sonucuna varılmıştır
