    Assessment of lake water quality using multivariate statistical techniques and chlorophyll-nutrient relationships: a case study of the Göksu Lake

    This study aimed to evaluate the water quality of the Göksu Lake, which is located in Ankara, Turkey. For this purpose, multivariate statistical analyses, namely, principal component analysis/factor analysis, regression analysis and cluster analysis, and linear regression analysis, were used to determine the relationship between the nutrients. In order to evaluate the status of the lake water quality, the limiting nutrient element was determined using the total nitrogen to total phosphorus ratio (TN/TP). The water quality parameters were selected as pH, turbidity, chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids (SS), dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total nitrogen (TN), chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), total phosphorus (TP), color, fecal coliform (FC), and total coliform (TC) count. For the cluster analysis, the single-link clustering method using Euclidean distance criteria was preferred. Cluster I consisted of sites 1, 2, 3, and 4, while cluster II consisted of site 5. Two factors were obtained as a result of the factor analysis. These two factors explained 88.2% of the total variance. The first factor clarifies the 45.62% of total variance has pH, COD, DO, TN, TP, color, BOD, and TC strong positive load value. This factor was thought to represent domestic wastewater. The second factor that affects water quality clarifies the 42.54% of total variance has turbidity, SS, Chl-a, and FC strong positive load value. This factor was thought to represent the microbiological activities that occurred as a result of the mixing of wastewaters and also pollution accumulating in the bottom sediment. The nutrient-limiting elements in the water lake quality are determined with TN/TP ratio. Accordingly, the lake water quality was determined as N-limited at two points and co-limited at three points. The relationship between the nutrients was evaluated using regression analysis

    Determination of the Nutritional Habits and Anxiety Levels in Individuals with COVID-19 in Turkey

    Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which has spread worldwide since December 2019, has infected and claimed the lives of millions of people. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between anxiety levels and nutritional habits of patients with COVID-19. Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled patients diagnosed with COVID-19 between February 1, 2021 and May 1, 2021. The study population included a total of 108 individuals with COVID-19 residing in Artvin, Turkey. This study used a self-administered online questionnaire, containing 40 questions from the State and Trait Anxiety Scale. Results: The state anxiety score was 37.26, and the trait anxiety score was 39.98. A strong, positive, and significant relationship was found between the state and trait anxiety levels of the participants (r = 0.588; p < 0.001). Conclusions: Many individuals who recovered from COVID-19 still suffer and struggle with the residual symptoms of COVID-19 for several months. Symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, pain, and malnutrition may occur even after recovery

    Comparative analysis of the greenhouse gas emissions from road transport in the metropolitan cities of Turkey

    Bu çalışmada Türkiye’deki büyükşehirlerin 2010 ve 2019 yıllarına ait karayolu ulaşımından (bireysel seyahatler+yolcu ve yük taşımacılığı) kaynaklı sera gazı emisyon miktarları IPCC tarafından geliştirilen Tier 1 yöntemi kullanılarak hesaplanmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlara göre 30 büyükşehirde 2010 yılında toplam sera gazı emisyon miktarı 43.403 Gg CO2 eşdeğer(e.) iken, 2019 yılında artarak 70.271 Gg CO2e. ulaşmıştır. 2010-2019 yılları arasında toplam sera gazı emisyon miktarı %61,90 oranında artış göstermiştir. Toplam sera gazı emisyon miktarında İstanbul, Ankara, İzmir, kişi başına düşen sera gazı emisyon miktarında Denizli, Mersin, Muğla, araç başına düşen sera gazı emisyon miktarında Mardin, Kocaeli, Diyarbakır, km2 ’ye düşen sera gazı emisyon miktarında ise İstanbul, Kocaeli, İzmir şehirleri ilk 3 sırada yer almaktadır. Hem 2010 hem de 2019 yılında İstanbul, Ankara, İzmir, Bursa, Mersin, Antalya, Konya ve Kocaeli ortalama emisyon miktarının üstünde değerlere sahiptir. Bu şehirlerde alınacak öncelikli önlemler ile ülkemizin karayolu kaynaklı emisyon miktarı önemli oranda düşürülebilecektir. Diğer taraftan Mardin, Van ve Şanlıurfa gibi doğu bölgemizdeki şehirlerde emisyon artış hızı diğer şehirlere göre çok daha yüksektir. Çalışmada büyükşehirler alternatif taşıma seçenekleri ve alt yapılara göre de karşılaştırılmış ve demiryolu hariç diğer seçeneklerin emisyon artış hızını azaltmada etkili olduğu tespit edilmiştirIn this study, the amount of greenhouse gas emissions from road transport belonging to the metropolis in Turkey in 2010 and 2019 were calculated using the Tier 1 method developed by the IPCC. According to the results, while the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions in 30 metropolitan cities in 2010 was 43,403 Gg CO2 equivalent, it increased in 2019 and reached 70, 271 Gg CO2 equivalent. Between 2010 and 2019, the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions increased by 61.90%. The cities of Istanbul, Ankara, İzmir in total greenhouse gas emissions, Denizli, Mersin, Muğla in terms of greenhouse gas emissions per capita, Mardin, Kocaeli, Diyarbakır in terms of greenhouse gas emissions per vehicle, and Istanbul, Kocaeli and İzmir in terms of greenhouse gas emissions per km2 . are in the top 3 places. Both in 2010 and 2019, Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Bursa, Mersin, Antalya, Konya and Kocaeli have values above the average emission amount. With priority measures to be taken in these cities, the total amount of emissions in our country can be reduced significantly. On the other hand, in cities in our eastern region such as Mardin, Van and Şanlıurfa, the speed of increase in emissions is much higher than that of other cities. In the study, metropolitan cities were compared according to alternative transportation options and infrastructures and it was determined that other options, except rail, were effective in reducing the emission rate

    Assessment of photometric and electrical measurements of residential light sources

    The development of light sources that provides lighting with electrical energy has a history of about 200 years and it has still been continuing today. Over the time, diferent light sources have been developed by the use of diferent technologies. Eventually, a large product inventory comprised from light sources in diferent structures and characteristics has been obtained. Residential lighting is an important feld in the sector in terms of appealing large number of users and a wide range of application areas. In addition, lighting quality is prioritized in residential buildings, because people get more closely exposed to artifcial light in those places. In this study, the most commonly used eight diferent light sources in residential buildings have been investigated. The selected light sources are comprised of the products from halogen, CFL and LED lighting technologies. All the light sources have been chosen with equivalent luminous fux values. The selected light sources have been subjected to photometric and electrical measurements realized simultaneously under the same ambient conditions. The interactions between photometric parameters and the meaning of these magnitudes in terms of users have been tried to be explained in an explanatory language. For the same purpose, electrical parameters have been also examined and their meanings terms of both the user and system have been given. Based on the results obtained, evaluation of the light sources selected from diferent technologies have been provided sophisticatedly and their suitability in terms of users and systems have been discussed. In the last part, the loading efcacy value has been examined and reference has been made to the appropriateness of the use of this value in expressing the efciency of the light sources

    Analysis of furniture products' contribution to Turkey's economy with a hybrid multi-criteria decision making method

    The furniture sector has a strategic importance in Turkey. That sector contributes greatly to the national economy, provides high levels of employment, is rapidly growing, and does not have a foreign trade deficit. In this paper, a hybrid multi-criteria decision-making method was used to determine the contribution of some furniture products to Turkey's economy. First, the entropy method was used to determine the weight values of the criteria, and then the ELimination Et Choix Traduisant la REalite (ELimination Et Choice Translating REality) (ELECTRE) method was used to compare and rank the alternatives. As a result of this analysis, the furniture products that contributed the most to the national economy were "seating furniture and parts thereof, other wooden furniture", "wooden bedroom furniture", "other metal furniture", and "parts of furniture other than metal and wood". The least contributing products were "furniture used in medicine, surgical, dental, veterinary, and barber chairs etc.", "plastic furniture", and "furniture other than metal, wood, and plastic"

    Comparative wood anatomy of atraphaxis taxa in Turkey

    The wood anatomy of four Atraphaxis taxa that have natural distribution in Turkey-Atraphaxis billardieri Jaub. & Spach, Atraphaxis billardieri subsp. tournefortii (Jaup. & Spach) Lovelius, Atraphaxis spinosa L., and endemic Atraphaxis grandiflora (Willd.)-were compared in this study. The wood samples were sectioned according to standard techniques. Samples were macerated with Schultze's method. Tangential and radial vessel diameters, intervessel pit diameters, vessel wall thickness, vessel elements length, dimensions of libriform fibres (lengths, widths, cell wall thickness and, lumen diameter), and uniseriate and biseriate ray heights were measured, and the number of vessels per mm(2), number of rays per mm, and number of vessels per group were counted. The qualitative features such as growth rings, vessel grouping, presence of helical thickening and storied structure, vestured pits, type of perforation plate, and arrangement of axial parenchyma were determined. These four species of Atraphaxis shrubs differ in some wood characteristics such as growth rings, vessel grouping, vestured pits, height and density of rays, number of vessels per mm(2), and the dimensions of the vessel

    Investigation of forest ecosystem services and payments for ecosystem services in Turkish forestry sector plans

    Forest ecosystems provide a variety of environmental, economic, social and cultural goods and services crucial to sustaining human societies such as food, raw material, carbon sequestration, water purification, soil formation and habitat for millions of species. Due to excessive demand stemming from economic growth, demographic changes and individual choices, ecosystem services are under pressure and they are degraded. That is why it becomes more crucial to prevent these ecosystems and ecosystem services. In this study it is aimed to review the relationship between forest resources and ecosystem services for the Turkish forestry sector. Within this scope, after a brief examination of forest ecosystem services and the current situation of payment for ecosystem services (PES) mechanisms in Turkey, the forestry sector plans and documents are analyzed and how ecosystem services and PES mechanisms are handled in these plans and programs are evaluated. It is determined that there is no detailed purposes or actions on forest ecosystem services, their importance and PES in forestry sector plans in Turkey. Although emerging mechanisms such as PES offer good alternatives for financing forestry sector projects, Turkish forestry sector does not benefit from these resources yet already

    The nexus between team culture, innovative work behaviour and tacit knowledge sharing: Theory and evidence

    This study was supported by Anadolu University Scientific Research Projects Commission, under grant no: 2005E020.Tacit knowledge sharing is an essential intellectual capital for frontline employees in hotel enterprises. While the relationship of knowledge sharing with team culture (TC) and innovative work behavior (IWB) was investigated in the extant literature, little is known about the extent to which tacit knowledge sharing affects TC and IWB. In this regard, the purpose of this study is to investigate the role of tacit knowledge sharing in the relationship between TC and IWB. For this purpose, data were gathered from 360 department managers of Turkish 4–5 star hotels. The results were analyzed utilizing Smart PLS 3 using bootstrapping to determine the level of significance of the relationships between tacit knowledge sharing, TC and IWB. The results show statistically significant relationships between tacit knowledge sharing, TC and IWB. Moreover, tacit knowledge sharing has a mediating role in the relationship between team culture and innovative work behavior

    Relationship between levels of intercultural sensitivity and emotional intelligence amongst preservice social studies teachers

    This study focused on the levels of intercultural sensitivity and emotional intelligence demonstrated by pre-service Social Studies teachers' and sought to explore the relationship between the two variables. The study used a correlational survey research design. The sample consisted of 274 pre-service Social Studies teachers who were in different years of study. The data were collected using the “Intercultural Sensitivity Scale”, “Emotional Intelligence Scale”, and a “Personal Information Form”. The data were analyzed using the independent samples T-test and one-way Analysis Of Variance (ANOVA). The correlation co-efficient was also computed to identify the relationship between intercultural sensitivity and emotional intelligence. The analysis results showed that the intercultural sensitivity of preservice Social Studies teachers' differed significantly according to gender and them having friends from different countries or cultures; while their emotional intelligence differed significantly according to having friends from different countries or cultures. A significant moderate positive correlation was found between intercultural sensitivity and emotional intelligence. Further research may contribute to the literature by studying emotional intelligence and intercultural sensitivity in sample groups from different areas or with different characteristics

    Evaluation of the eating attitude of handball players

    Study Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the eating attitudes of handball players according to some variables. Methods: One hundred twenty volunteer handball players participated in the study. The questionnaire consisted of the information questionnaire that determined the demographic characteristics and the eating attitude test EAT-26, which was adapted to Turkish by Devran (2014). After the scales were prepared on google-form, the research was announced on social media, and participation was provided voluntarily. When the data used in the study were analyzed with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, the Mann-Whitney U, and Kruskal-Wallis tests, which were nonpararnetric. Results: In the study, normal eating attitudes and behaviors were observed in 83.3% of the athletes, and abnormal eating attitudes and behaviors were observed in 16.7%. When the eating attitude scores of the athletes were compared according to the variables of gender, nutrition program implementation, dietitian support, and body weight perception, a statistically significant difference was observed, and no difference was observed in terms of age, educational status, sports age, weekly training time (p <0.05). Moreover, it was found that the difference in the sub-dimensions was significant according to the gender and body weight perception variable, the eating attitude scores of females were higher than males was due to the bulimic behavior sub-dimension, and according to the bodyweight perception, it was found that the athletes who stated themselves as weak in the oral control behavior dimension (p <0.05). Conclusion: When the eating attitude scores of the athletes according to gender, nutritional program application status, dietician support variables, and body weight perception were compared, significance was found (p <0.05). It was known that eating disorders had very negative effects on athlete's health and performance. Therefore, unhealthy exercise and diet programs should be avoided and the importance of healthy nutrition should be emphasized
