    Dr. Carlton E. Brown served as the eleventh president of Savannah State University from 1997 until 2006. Brown's administration has accomplished a 1,000-student jump in enrollment, replaced broken-down housing facilities, constructed Tiger Arena and earned accreditation or re-accreditation for business, social work and engineering technology programs. Brown was also instrumental in securing financial resources for students. The T.I.G.E.R. program, which stands for Targeted Individual Giving for Educational Resources, is a scholarship fund supported primarily by SSU faculty and staff. There is also the Presidential Scholarship Program, which is the highest academic scholarship awarded to incoming freshmen: full tuition, room-and-board, and books
