    Integrating Artistic Research into German University of Applied Sciences Curricula: A New Paradigm in Science Education

    This paper presents a pioneering approach to integrating artistic research into the curriculum of German universities of applied sciences (UAS). Recognizing the unique challenges and opportunities presented by artistic disciplines in higher education, we have developed modules for a master's program that blend epistemological content with the fundamentals of artistic research. This initiative addresses the current disparity in qualification opportunities for artistic disciplines at the UAS level, where artistic achievements are legally equated with scientific accomplishments, yet opportunities for higher qualification in these fields are limited. Our approach is anchored in the belief that artistic research, a field that challenges traditional research paradigms by valuing artful knowledge alongside scientific knowledge, deserves a structured and recognized pathway within the academic system. Drawing from relevant legal texts and documents that equate artistic and scientific qualifications of personnel, we argue for the integration of artistic research into the curriculum as a step towards rectifying the existing imbalance and underrepresentation of artistic disciplines in higher education.     Manufacturing of solid core optical waveguide based pressure sensor for 3D-printed below-knee orthosis

    The ability to manufacture complex 3D-objects directly from its CAD model is the important reason why additive manufacturing is being widely used to fabricate cost-efficient prototypes and preferred over conventional manufacturing methods. Moreover, it portrays as a bridging technology to connect different scientific and industrial fields, e.g. Engineering, Medicine, etc. Consequently, additive manufacturing finds its applications in the production of patient-specific orthoses. This paper discusses the development of a pressure sensor based on an optical waveguide principle manufactured using stereolithography apparatus process to embed into a below-knee orthosis. For Orthopedic patients, the below-knee orthosis must be adjusted to the lower leg at regular intervals due to anthropometric changes in patient’s body to achieve proper mobility and correct load. Currently, this alteration relies on the patient’s estimation of support load which is only sub-optimal. Hence, the concept of developing an intelligent orthosis with a novel embedded optical system to monitor the exact support load at the neuralgic is proposed

Komplexität und „Verschränktheit“ der Prozesse in Entwicklung und Produktion wachsen vielen Unternehmen über den Kopf. Der Durchblick geht verloren, die Kosten laufen davon. Das muss nicht so sein.     Nordmann and Noble fir Lamellas for Structural Purposes – Grading and Determination of Elastomechanical Properties by Non-Destructive and Destructive Testing

    Since the early 2000s, forest owners in Central Europe have increasingly planted Nordmann fir (Abies nordmanniana (STEV.) SPACH) and Noble fir (Abies procera REHD.) for Christmas trees, intending to convert them into high forests. Climate-related damage, especially since 2018, has significantly reduced spruce populations, requirering a shift towards climate-adaptable tree species in future forests. Additionally, to reduce CO2 emissions from construction, there's a push for expanding timber construction, requiring non-spruce species for load-bearing products and applications. Although Nordmann and Noble fir are potential alternatives to spruce, they are not yet integrated into European standardization for load-bearing construction. Therefore, an assessment of German-origin Nordmann and Noble fir for use in glued laminated building products (GLT and CLT) is underway. Kiln-dried lamellas are graded visually and by machine using longitudinal vibration, with selected lamellas tested for tensile strength. Various mechanical properties are determined using non-destructive and destructive methods to establish input parameters for Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

    Decline of department stores and the issue of ´third places´ in German inner-cities: decline, obsolescence and reuse potentials

    The paper explores the rise and fall of the Karstadt department stores, which used to be the focal points of many German inner-cities throughout the twentieth century. The paper addresses the current issues of their obsolescence, decline and a recent increase in vacancies of the buildings. The desolation of those, once vibrant ´third places´ – commercial entities, but also communal spaces, where people could meet and socialize – is asking for reuse scenarios, and thus requires an assessment of those buildings, understanding of the layers of history, analysis of their values, but also their potentials to adapt to changing circumstances and societal needs. While focusing on this particular typology of the inner-city department stores and the specific case of Karstadt buildings, the paper aims to address the issue of decline of various retail facilities, but also a general decline of ´third places´ in cities. The term ´third places´ was coined by a sociologist Ray Oldenburg in 1989, and denotes places beyond home (the primary place) and work (the secondary place) such as community centres, cafes, public libraries, theatres, public parks, etc. The study aims to better understand both causes and socio-spatial effects of their decline, correlating it with the digitalisation shift, changes in retail culture, but also blurred conventional separation between the first, the second and the third places (emergence of the so-called co-living, co-working and co-mingling spaces). It presents several case studies and research focusing on reuse potentials. The paper argues that the ´third places´ have an important role in the well-being of local communities, in enhancing social cohesion, civic engagement and sense of belonging, and therefore need to remain focal in adaptive reuse proposals
