A multi-skill RCPSP variant for persons with disabilities in sheltered workshops

    No full text
Sheltered workshops face the challenge of meeting their manufacturing objectives while considering the individual competenciesand assistance needs of persons with disabilities. Moreover, work processes in sheltered workshops are weakly structured, allowing for frequent task interruptions and changes based on the preferences of impaired work persons. While the Industry 4.0 literature provides many real-time scheduling algorithms for incorporating multiple objectives and constraints, these algorithms fall short of the characteristics of sheltered workshops. The resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) is an optimization problem for computing manufacturing plans considering multiple objectives and resource constraints. Among many different RCPSP variants proposed in the literature, the multi-skill RCPSP (MSRCPSP) variant considers the individual skills of work persons when generating manufacturing plans. With the ongoing digital transformation of enterprises, new assistance systems enter the market, providing individual support to impaired work persons and compensating for lacking skills and abilities. This paper proposes an MSRCPSP variant that incorporates assistance systems and learning tasks compensating for competence gaps in the skill matrix of impaired work persons. Furthermore, it decomposes tasks into individual work objects, which accounts for frequent task interruptions and task preferences of work persons. The algorithm is described and demonstrated using a manufacturing data set from an actual sheltered workshop. In a small evaluation study, the algorithm is tested by scheduling two impaired work persons in the assembly department of a medium-sized manufacturing company in the primary labor market. The evaluation study proves its real-world applicability and the suitability of scheduling algorithms for participation and inclusive work

How efficient are pre-dams as reservoir guardians? A long-term study on nutrient retention

    No full text
Assessing nutrient loading and processing is crucial for water quality management in lakes and reservoirs. Quantifying and reducing external nutrient inputs in these systems remains a significant challenge. The difficulty arises from low monitoring frequencies of the highly dynamic external inputs and the limited availability of measures to reduce diffuse source loading. One option for the latter is the use of pre-dams, i.e. small impoundments at the inflow points into reservoirs, designed to retain nutrients by algal uptake and sedimentation. This study analyzes long-term (ranging from 8 to 22 years) nutrient and discharge time series for nine German pre-dams to assess their retention capacity. For that, we (i) quantified nutrient loading using four different mathematical methods, (ii) derived their retention efficiencies, and (iii) identified environmental factors determining the retention of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and silica (Si). We show that retention of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) (43.6 %) and total phosphorus (TP) (39.9 %) is far higher than for nitrate (NO3) (15.3 %) and Si (15.9 %). The retention efficiency for SRP and TP was higher during the warm seasons because of higher algal nutrient uptake and thus higher nutrient sedimentation. Mixed effects models documented a significant positive effect of the pre-dams' hydraulic residence time (HRT) on retention efficiency. Pre-dams provide substantial service in retaining nutrients and help to protect downstream waterbodies from nutrient inputs. They provide effective measures for trapping nutrients including those originating from non-point sources

    Kharkiv Modernism

    No full text
In 2022, Docomomo International launched a call for papers on Modern Movement in Ukraine together with Docomomo Ukraine. More than 20 proposals were received, most of them from authors based in Ukraine itself—despite the difficult circumstances. The Docomomo Journal 67 presented a first selection of those articles to display regional and architectural particularities and current challenges of archiving, documenting, protecting, and preserving the modern heritage. Nearly 100 examples of Ukrainian modern buildings were presented in a graphical overview. The modern Ukranian architecture was dominated by Constructivism from the mid-1920s to the early 1930s, with Kharkiv as the epicenter of production, while Socialist Realism with the Stalin Empire emerged from 1932, lasting until 1955, with Kyiv as the capital of Ukraine. From December 1919 to January 1934, Kharkiv was the first capital of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic and the cultural, economic, and educational center of the new Ukrainian Republic. The status as new capital led to prestigious master plans and construction projects, among them the world-famous Derzhprom building at Freedom Square–as a symbol of Constructivism–or the Kharkiv Tractor Factory–as a symbol of the industrialization of agriculture. The leading role of Kharkiv as a forerunner and capital of Constructivism is often expressed by the famous State Industry House (Derzhprom) built from 1925 to 1928. Being the only modern ensemble in Ukraine nominated as UNESCO World Heritage, it became and still is the focus of identification and pride—despite the many controversial reflections and discussions about the conservation efforts and changes carried out since the original construction in the 1950s and after the year 2000. This explains the many articles dealing with Freedom Square and Dherzprom as a reaction to the call for papers in 2022 and also Docomomo International’s commitment to dedicate this special issue of the Docomomo Journal to Kharkiv under the title From Constructivism to Modernism in Kharkiv

    The Way towards Regional Modernities

This issue of Docomomo Journal on the architects Dušan Grabrijan (1899-1952) and Juraj Neidhardt (1901-1979) keeps with the tradition of collaboration and discourse. The authors investigate, describe, and interpret the friendship, exchange, and works of both architects and their role in the modernization of Yugoslav architecture since the 1920s based on their international experience. Grabjian, the first graduate of Jože Plečnik at the University of Ljubljana, went to study in Paris in 1925-26, and Neidhardt worked in the studio of Le Corbusier in Paris from 1933-35. Both Grabrijan and Neidhardt played crucial roles in articulating a Yugoslavian architectural identity that straddled modernism and regionalism. Their work in Bosnia and Herzegovina was groundbreaking in its insistence that modern architecture could not simply be imported from the West; it had to be adapted to the local climate, materials, and ways of life. They both remain influential in the study of how architecture can reconcile the tension between modern abstraction and regional specificity, and their work continues to be studied as a model for integrating global and local architectural practices

Knowledge Spillover: Between Serendipity and Strategic Planning - Lessons for Practice-oriented Interventions into Regional Innovation Systems

    No full text
Previous CSCW research has paid increasing attention to regional innovation systems providing the context for CSCW research and design. In this paper we provide insights into attempts to intervene in such a regional innovation system via practice-oriented activities. Our findings describe experiences of co-creating knowledge around digitization of SMEs on a regional level, beyond individual company contexts. We reflect on the benefits and challenges such an approach affords and highlight the importance of interpersonal relationships and similarities between practices in different contexts to enable intended but also initially unexpected knowledge spillovers. Our findings highlight how a praxeological approach to CSCW can be influential in regional development programs, and open this field to CSCW research and design. We draw out lessons for similar interventions and outline fruitful avenues for future research
