A Structured Method for the Selection of Business Processes Suitable for Robotic Process Automation

    No full text
As companies increasingly adopt software applications to improve business efficiency, often digitization gaps arise when legacy systems fail to integrate with new applications. These gaps often result in redundant task execution across incompatible systems. Robotic Process Automation (RPA) emerges as a solution by automating such tasks. However, selecting the right processes that will be subjected to RPA is crucial to avoid failures and resource waste. Therefore, this paper introduces a four-stage method to evaluate processes for RPA suitability, grounded on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). By systematically analyzing scientific literature and incorporating weights from RPA experts, this paper sheds light on the complex nature of process selection criteria for RPA. Tested in a company, the method facilitates the process selection, indicating its practical applicability

Potentials of an informational assembly assistance system for persons with cognitive disabilities — Results of a laboratory study

    No full text
In Germany, individuals unable or not yet able to return to the general labor market due to disabilities are employed in sheltered workshops which are called WfbM (“Werkstätten für behinderte Menschen”). These organizations are required to earn the wages for the aforementioned group of people by offering market services. These services include, in particular, assembly activities. However, WfbM face the challenge that customer orders tend to become more complex, especially as a result of an increased number of product variants. This development not only has an impact on the work in WfbM, but also makes it much more difficult to achieve the desired inclusion of people with disabilities in the general labor market. Bearing this in mind, the research question addressed in this article can be stated as such: How far can the use of an informational assistance system compensate for performance deficits of people with disabilities in the context of assembly? The results of the conducted laboratory study show that the implementation of an assistance system can help to reduce existing barriers and challenges resulting from the mismatch between requirements of the general labor market and the performance characteristics of people with cognitive impairments. Practical Relevance: For people with disabilities, the use of assistance systems opens up new opportunities for participation in the general labor market and thus makes an important contribution to implementing the requirements of the “Bundesteilhabegesetz” (a law to strengthen participation of people with disabilities in Germany).

Time autonomy in personnel planning: Requirements and solution approaches in the context of intelligent scheduling from a holistic organizational perspective

    No full text
AbstractTraditional work models often need more flexibility and time autonomy for employees, especially in manufacturing. Quantitative approaches and Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications offer the potential to improve work design. However, current research does not entirely focus on human-centric criteria that enable time autonomy. This paper addresses this gap by developing a set of criteria to evaluate intelligent personnel planning approaches based on their ability to enhance time autonomy for employees. Existing quantitative approaches are not sufficient to fully integrate the developed criteria.Consequently, a novel model approach is proposed in an attempt to bridge the gap between current practices and the newly developed criteria. This two-stage planning approach fosters democratization of time autonomy on the shopfloor, moving beyond traditional top-down scheduling. The paper concludes by outlining the implementation process and discusses future developments with respect to AI for this model approach.Practical Relevance: In order to make working conditions on the shopfloor in high-wage countries more attractive, an alternative organization of shift work is needed. Intelligent planning approaches that combine traditional operations research methods with artificial intelligence approaches can democratize shift organization regarding time autonomy. Planning that takes both employee and employer preferences into account in a balanced way will strengthen the long-term competitiveness of manufacturing companies in high-wage countries and counteract the shortage of skilled labor.</jats:p

Retracted: Structural Sealant Glazing (SSG): History, Construction, and Conservation Challenges

The high-tech architecture of the 1970s–1990s is typically characterized by the use and exhibition of advanced technologies. In terms of appearance, these buildings often have innovative façades, supporting structures accentuated in color, and expressively displayed technology systems. Unfortunately, however, the rapid obsolescence of technology has often led to the complete replacement of the very systems that defined the architectural form. In 2023, an international conference at ETH Zurich in collaboration with Bauhaus-Universität Weimar explored the question of how best to deal with the structural legacy of technologically innovative architecture. This book summarizes the results and provides an overview of the current state of research. Current state of research on high-tech architecture and its conservation Overview of the opportunities and challenges of high-tech buildings New findings on the topic of building within existing structures Also available as a set with the congress volume Denkmal Postmoderne 978-3-0356-2783-

    KI.BAU Artificial Intelligence in Architecture

    No full text
KI.BAU is a project being developed and conducted at the Detmold School of Design, part of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Ostwestfalen-Lippe. It focuses on researching the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in architectural design, modelling, production and management processes, particularly on the communication between users, processes and the building itself in various development and life-time phases. Hence the research aims to develop new tools and AI-supported process chains for the design, production and communication of architecture. This includes the training and implementing prototypical machine learning algorithms to autonomously evolve and optimize field-specific processes and workflows. As mentioned above, a critical question KI.BAU explores is how we, as planners, builders and users, will communicate with architecture in the future, in its phases of creation and use but also beyond. This also involves, besides virtual interfaces, examining the physical interaction with a building, its behaviour, responsiveness and adaptation to certain conditions. The primary goal of the research at KI.BAU is to transform architecture into an intelligent, to some degree self-sustaining, self-reflective and maybe even evolving ‘ecological system’. This system should be comprehensively linked with its creators, users, devices, computers, its (biological) environment and networks. Consequently, a building must be viewed as an organism that communicates, interacts and adapts to other connected or related organisms and entities

A Human Digital Twin of Disabled Workers for Production Planning

    No full text
Including disabled workers in value-creating work processes is a fundamental and guaranteed human right and is, therefore, an essential goal of society. In Germany, sheltered workshops create the conditions for this inclusion since they are essential to companies' value chains. A central challenge is the inclusion of disabled workers in the value-creation processes, such as in manufacturing or assembly areas. The skills of disabled workers vary since they have individual impairments. Therefore, this paper presents a digital human model, a Human Digital Twin (HDT), for disabled workers. The model maps their skills and supports the production planning and assembly processes. (C) 2024 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V
