Universal Design integrated in Architecture: A Proposal for Housing the Elderly
No full textThis paper compiles the main conclusions of a research project conducted at the Design Department of the Architecture School of Madrid, focusing on the Home Model for the elderly in Europe. The research analyses the development of the design process over the past 70 years through nine Danish examples: From mainstream treatment of the patient to personalized service to the user. The focus of social sciences in this evolution has influenced new policies of the United Nations and the European Union with a view to providing better and sustainable solutions for an ageing population. This paper aims to explain how, with the architectural design approach, Universal Design is the next step in the logic evolution in design for elderly people, and therefore, for any person with or without disabilities
