A S OUR ENVIRONMENTS PROVES that good architecture and design not can be re-garded as a given outcome of the efforts 
of the profession, it can be suspected that the 
process that constitutes the results of the pro-
fessions activities suffers from certain imperfec-
tions and or is restrained by some obstacles. 
If one accepts architecture as the built ex-
pression of the predominant social, economical, 
political and cultural conditions, ideas and valua-
tions in a certain period, a study of those condi-
tions may explain important developments in the 
history of architecture and planning. We will 
then learn about how changes in the distribution 
of power are reflected in the built environment 
and find that the architectural profession hardly 
can claim that it, during any period and to any 
greater extent, has shaped the development of 
society. That does not mean that architects, 
through history, have been neither unimportant 
nor powerless. As planners and designers of 
buildings and environments they have been, and 
still are, one of the most influential tools for the 
implementation of societies, and its rulers, aims 
and goals. This puts the question of whether their 
work is based on knowledge of its consequences 
or if it is to be regarded as a mere activity, to its 
head. 
History tells us that neither economical deve-
lopment nor its subsequent political ambitions 
are without influence on planning and architec-
ture. Cities and buildings are the most obvius 
illustrations of the development, liqiudation, 
revival etc of values and ideas within society as 
a whole. Of this follows that an awareness of 
values in force ought to be of guidance for its 
planners and designers. 
Mistakes in planning and building are very 
difficult and expensive to correct or hide. We 
have to live with them even when we have for-

gotten what they were aimed at achieving. More 
or less general consent about certain aims and 
goals can quickly be forgotten, especially if the 
outcome of their materialisation turns out to be 
unsuccessful. Still, as the architects are the 
claimed experts, the public may with right argue 
that a principal demand on any professional ope-
ration should be an understanding of the conse-
quences of their works. 
An architect regarded as succesful within the 
professions subculture is one who gets his designs 
not only executed but also published in the 
magazines of the profession. Unfortunately this 
attitude seems to exclude general appreciation of 
alternative careers. As any group in any society 
is dependant on an understanding of its ideals by 
influential representatives of politics and other 
spheres of power it would certainly help if the 
architects were more widely spread outside their 
traditional field of activity. 
The group of architects that are generally ack-
nowledged within the profession is very limited, 
the group that is known to a greater public is of 
course even more restricted. Their works are to 
some extent known although in many cases 
rather as images than actual buildings and en-
vironments. Consequently, what originally may 
have been an architectural work based on an 
analysis of its site and other conditions as well as 
the functions it should serve, stands the risk of 
being reduced to an image of itself copied with 
varying success. 
Archetypes, originally connected to specific 
functions, have always formed a base for the 
development in design and planning. It was the 
architects of the 19th century who, faced with 
new tasks, started to use the archetypes for new 
types of buildings and even mix them. 
Functionalism learned us to discard the sym-
bolism in architectural forms but did not replace 
the classical architects knowledge about form 
and its significanse with any new knowledge of 
the same fundamental and percieveable char-
acter. The functionalists instead taught us that 
form should follow function and thus that de-
sign should be based on a scientifique and care-
ful analysis of conditions, demands and tech-
niques. Unfortunately the implementation of 
that message proved difficult. The ambition to 
make the design work into a concious process 
failed to a large extent and what we got was an 
architecture which, mostly regardless of tradi-
tion and climate, produced new archetypes of an 
even bigger scale, an internationalism which 
almost by definition excluded consideration of 
local traditions as well as all other kinds of 
specific conditions. As a late reaction to that we 
then got postmodernism which just dressed the 
same onebuilding-sized archetypes in frag-
ments of classical orders and other decorative 
elements. 
Also the content of the architects work changed 
as urbanisation, the development of traffic, 
massive investment in housing as well as many 
other tendencies in society developed and de-
manded rational planning and designing methods 
and procedures. And indeed it got them, to such 
an extent that one may ask if they not quickly got 
out of the hands of the architects. In fact the 
rational of functionalism quickly developed in-
to something that was so simplified that it could 
be coped with by almost anyone and conse-
quently made generations of architects believe 
that the knowledge demanded for the execu-
tion of theirprofession was wery easily obtained. 
I believe most schools of architecture still fos-
ter that misunderstanding. Certainly knowledge 
can be obtained through experience and prac-
tical work. However that method may bring 
about exposing society to some inevitable mis-
takes underway. Any method of achieving pro-
fessional maturity is eased by the possession of 
a foundation of basic knowledge. It is the evi-
dent responsibility of the schools of architecture 
to give its students such a base. 
Therefore, I will not hesitate to propose curri-
culums that promotes theoretical studies in favour 
of the practical training in design and planning. 
Furthermore I do not think it is possible to 
procure that knowledge to any greater extent 
through studies in form of design programs 
alone.

I am quite aware that this can give three alter-
native consequences: 
• the education has to be longer in terms of 
semesters and years or, 
• the education has to be supplemented with 
additional training or, 
• the young architects will enter the profession 
with less design training. 
I consider all three alternatives superior to what 
we have now if it can give society architects with 
better basic knowledge within the relevant sub-
jects and, most important, a deeper understan-
ding of the knowledge that ought to govern the 
acts of building and planning including those 
undertaken by by other specialists outside the 
architects profession. 
I may explain this seemingly very conservative 
opinion by declaring that I profoundly consider 
that we have reached a point in the development 
of our profession, as well as within the building 
and construction sector of the economy as a 
whole, that is very close to the dead end of a cul-
de-sac. A long period of almost continuos ex-
pansion with everincreasing demand for new 
buildings and plans, a period that has produced 
not only more buildings than any other period in 
the history but also a previously unseen amount 
of devastating mistakes, has come to its end. 
In the future society will certainly have use for 
a limited amount of brilliant designers as con-
struction, redevelopment and rehabilitation, even 
if it will slow down, of course will not stop. My 
point is that it is neither the prime responsibility 
nor within the capacity of the schools of archi-
tecture to promote them, they will turn up any-
how. (On the contrary I rather think that it is 
likely that more talents gets the chance to develop 
if they are given base to work from. At least that 
will give them a chance, one way or the other, to 
enter into the profession, something which is 
likely to demand a considerable inventiveness 
and flexibility with regard to tasks and working 
situations.) 
What society is in greater need for is more 
competence within planning and building as a 
whole, including its implementation. One im-
portant reason for that is that we, at least in this 
country, have a building industry that is the only 
sector of the economy that has suceeded in con-
siderably increasing its costs per unit, inflation 
excluded, during a period when all other sectors 
of the economy, have managed to reduce its costs 
per unit in real terms. This may be explained by 
the fact that investments in research and deve-
lopment within the construction industry is, and 
has always been, much less than in all other sec-
tors of the economy. 
As the changes required include the actual 
organisation of the building industry, compara-
tive studies of other sectors of the economy are 
of interest. What we then are likely to find is a 
marked tendency to steer and organise design 
and production in new ways in order to reduce 
use of material as well as number of hours re-
quired. This is achieved by designing the pro-
ducts in so that they are easy to assemble. In 
other words the production methods are given a 
marked influence on the design. Swedish buil-
ding industry tried that, in a rather primitive 
manner, during the sixties. 
When now the demand for cost reductions in 
building industry will come back, society needs 
architects who have knowledge about production 
techniques and methods in order to avoid a 
repetition of these old mistakes. Lack of engage-
ment in matters of this sort can only result in two 
things, either hardly any production at all because 
of costs, or, a production organised along lines 
that gives no regard to the qualities the architects 
are trying to maintain and guard. 
Another method applied in industry aimed at 
cutting costs is reducing the distance between 
management and development on one hand and 
production on the other. This is done forexemple 
by organising the actual assembly work on the 
shop floor along different lines including giving 
the workers more reponsibility and by moving 
some of the design and development specialists 
out on to the shop-floor, all in order to save time 
and unnecessary middle-management. We have 
seen hardly anything of that in building industry. 
To a certain extent we have even experienced the

contrary with contractors who instal more and 
more administration in between the designers, 
beeing the architects and the technical consul-
tants, and the building site. It is an illustrative 
paradox that the distance between the designing 
architect and the building site seems to be in-
creasing in a time when we at our have disposal 
tele- and computer-technique that can cut that 
distance to fractions of a second. 
If the architects fail to participate in the neces-
sary modernisation of the design a building 
process and continue to regard the design pro-
cess more as an end in itself, they are likely to 
loose even more of the influence they once had. 
Architects, who during the end of the eighties 
were overloaded with design work under con-
ditions ideal at least for their self-indulgence are 
now underemployed or not employed at all. It is 
unlikely that they will ever experience conditions 
of the kind typical for the past few years. This 
may, quite naturally, cause a feeling of despair 
but could, on the other hand be regarded as an 
opening to a revitalisation and a reestablishment 
of the profession. Whether this will occur, that is 
to say if the present crisis can initiate a positive 
changes, is something which is very much in the 
hands of the members, organisations and institu-
tions of the profession. 
Instead of being determined by its main fields 
of activities, primarily planning and designing, 
the architects profession ought to be defined by 
its sphere of knowledge. Technical, estethical 
and economical knowledge about buildings, en-
vironments in whole and parts combined with 
understanding of the conditions required for 
their creation should form the common base that 
defines the profession. The application of that 
knowledge in design, management, public or 
private administration, research, education, con-
struction etc. should be the superstructure. The 
creation, management and preservation of an 
architecture, with a quality that discriminates it 
from the mere construction or development, 
requires professionals whose activities are based 
on and supported by knowledge.

Om ideologikritik mm

Anledningen till att jag skriver detta är 
att jag ogillar ledaren, dvs den inle-
dande redaktionella kommentaren i nr 
2 av Tidskrift för Arkitekturforskning. 
Jag ska så småningom komma till den 
saken. 
Först vill jag emellertid säga något 
om det svar som redaktionen i samma 
nummer lämnar på Sven Thibergs kri-
tik av Eva Fries artikel i det första 
numret. 
Redaktionen ger en redovisning av 
de redaktionella principer som gäller 
för artiklar, debattinlägg och recensio-
ner och framhåller tidskriftens funk-
tion som medium för vetenskaplig de-
batt - en debatt vars kvalitet och tro-
värdighet hänger på debattöremas vilja 
och förmåga. Detta är alldeles utmärkt 
bra. Jag vill bara tillägga att jag hoppas 
att debatten inte bara håller sig till de-
battsidor och recensioner utan att den 
också förs i form av artiklar. Det finns 
ofta anledning att vara utförligare i sin 
kritik än vad som är möjligt eller rim-
ligt i en debattartikel eller recension. 
För att närmare förklara vad jag 
menar kan jag nämna t ex Jerker Lun-
dequists och Björner Torssons recen-
sion av Finn Wernes bok Den osynliga 
arkitekturen. Det är naturligtvis svårt 
att recensera en bok som innehåller så 
många olika tankegångar och det före-
faller naturligt att som här välja några 
av dessa för diskussion och att tillåta 
sig ganska svepande omdömen om 
dem. Detta är inget fel. Av en recen-
sion väntar man sig inte alltid en utför-
lig argumentation för de omdömen 
som görs. Den kan vara intressant 
även om man enbart får veta att någon 
tycker att något är bra eller dåligt. Men 
sedan kan man i artikelform ta upp en-
staka frågor och föra diskussionen 
längre. Ett ämne skulle kunna vara 
"Arkitekturen som språk". Vad säger 
Finn egentligen? Och vad säger recen-
senterna? Det vore kanske också in-
tressant med en ännu grundligare ut-
läggning om Sartres existentialism. 
Jag tycker inte att Jerker och Björner 
ger något bra svar på sin egen fråga: 
"Vad är det då som är intressant i 
Sartres tänkande, ur arkitekturens 
Tidskrift för Arkitekturforskning Vol. 1, No 2, 1988 91 
perspektiv?" 
Det är alltså möjligt att föra en ve-
tenskaplig diskussion på flera olika 
sätt, men det som på sikt kan föra ve-
tenskapen framåt är en grundlig kritik 
och diskussion kring avgränsade och 
kanske till synes små frågor. Tror jag. 
Den diskussionen kan också handla 
om vilka ideal som ska styra veten-
skapligheten. 
För att återgå till kommentaren av 
Svens artikel, så tycker jag inte att 
hans inlägg bör karakteriseras som 
"storm i ett vattenglas". Inget bör an-
ses vara för smått eller obetydligt att 
diskutera. Det finns visserligen anled-
ning att kritisera Sven, men inte för 
den fråga han tar upp. Det fel som han 
gör, enligt min mening, är att han inte 
nöjer sig med att påtala det han finner 
felaktigt och redovisa det han menar är 
korrekt, utan att han också misstänk-
liggör Eva Fries, redaktionen och tid-
skriften. Genom att kalla Evas artikel 
"falsifikat" tillskriver han henne av-
sikter som man nog bör betvivla. Det 
har knappast varit hennes avsikt att ge 
en falsk beskrivning av hur många 
doktorer som producerats vid olika 
avdelningar. 
Förutom att redaktionen givits 
möjlighet att framhålla tidskriftens roll 
som medium i den arkitekturveten-
skapliga diskussionen, har denna de-
batt klarlagt ytterligare två saker. 
Det torde nu vara ett väl etablerat 
och för tidskriftens läsekrets bekant 
faktum att vid KTH:s arkitektursektion 
innehar byggnadsfunktionslära rekor-
det när det gäller antalet doktorsav-
handlingar under åren 1971 till 1986. 
Det är den ena saken. 
Den andra saken är att det tycks 
finnas en stor samstämmighet om åt-
minstone ett ideal vad gäller veten-
skapligheten, nämligen sanningsidea-
let. Det är inte alltid lika lätt att avgöra 
vad som är sant och osant som i detta 
fall, men idealet finns alltid. 
Det finns också andra ideal som det 
säkert råder en stor enighet om. Ett 
sådant är kravet på klarhet och begrip-
lighet som Boris Schönbeck pläderar 
för i sin uppsats i nummer 2. 
Det är mot denna bakgrund - idea-
len om sanning och begriplighet, 
bland andra - som jag vill rikta kritik 
mot ledaren i nummer 2. 
Den inleds med påståendet att flera 
bidrag i detta nummer diskuterar de-
markationslinjen mellan ideologi och 
vetenskap. Det är inte sant. Jag tror 
inte att något bidrag diskuterar den sa-
ken. Här finns det visserligen ett be-
griplighetsproblem - man måste ha nå-
gon uppfattning om vad som menas 
med "ideologi" och "vetenskap", men 
jag tror att de flesta har en tillräckligt 
precis föreställning om innebörden för 
att kunna ta ställning till sanningshal-
ten i redaktionens påstående då man 
läser artiklarna. Man kan vidare ifrå-
gasätta om det är meningsfullt att tala 
om en demarkationslinje. Ett sätt att 
förstå Aant Elzingas artikel och dem 
han refererar till är att det inte finns 
någon ideologifri vetenskap. Det är 
kanske fåfängt att söka en demarka-
tionslinje. 
Jag avstår här frän att diskutera om

det är den fördolda, tysta delen av 
ideologin som påverkar oss (och vad 
som menas med detta) liksom om man 
kan utöva en ideologifri ideologikritik. 
Även dessa påståenden kan dock dis-
kuteras. 
Jag är benägen att instämma i att en 
viktig uppgift för arkitekturforsk-
ningen är ideologikritik, om man där-
med förstår ett ifrågasättande av för-
härskande föreställningar och värde-
ringar. Jag tror också att det oftast är 
en fördel om denna kritik görs ur ett 
historiskt perspektiv. En intressant 
fråga blir därför hur det förhåller sig 
med verklighetsbeskrivningar, värde-
ringar och historisk insikt i ledaren? 
Så här vill jag referera och kom-
mentera innehållet: 
Referat: Arkitekturideologins funk-
tionalism är en del av den övergripan-
de ideologin social ingenjörskonst som 
dominerat västeuropeiskt tänkande 
under efterkrigstiden. Den sociala in-
genjörskonsten innebär att sociala och 
politiska missförhållanden kan avhjäl-
pas med teknologiska och vetenskap-
liga metoder. 
Kommentar. Denna trendriktiga 
beskrivning är inte fri från tolknings-
problem. Det är inte alls klart vad som 
menas med "teknologiska och veten-
skapliga metoder" eller med "politiska 
missförhållanden" men med en välvil-
lig tolkning kan jag ändå godta be-
skrivningen. Den viktiga frågan är hur 
detta påstående, om det är sant, ska 
värderas. Vissa uttryck, särskilt "soci-
al ingenjörskonst" har (numera) en 
starkt negativ värdeladdning. Även 
"teknologisk metod" (vad det nu kan 
vara) låter skumt. Ett annat sätt att be-
skriva funktionalismen (eller vissa de-
lar av den) är att denna ideologi mera 
betonar betydelsen av vetenskaplig 
kunskap och teknik än tidigare (och 
kanske senare) arkitekturideologier 
och att den har (haft) större sociala 
ambitioner. Är det så dåligt? Man kan 
också uttrycka det så, att det är bättre 
att veta något om sociala problem och 
deras orsaker och om hur människor 
faktiskt använder och värderar bebyg-
gelsen än att inte veta något när man 
planerar byggnader och samhällen. 
Vad funktionalismen (och den sociala 
ingenjörskonsten) kan kritiseras för är 
en övertro på vetenskapens - kanske 
främst samhällsvetenskapens - möj-
ligheter och en bristande insikt om 
teknikens negativa verkningar. Genom 
sin starka betoning av "det praktiska" 
och ett vetenskapsideal betingat av ett 
ensidigt tekniskt kunskapsintresse (i 
Habermas mening) har funktiona-
lismen säkert försummat väsentliga 
saker, men därav följer inte att den 
tidiga arbetarrörelsens ideal att skaffa 
sig goda kunskaper om samhället och 
försöka använda dessa i samhälls-
förändringen behöver förkastas. Vad 
är alternativet? 
Referat: Inte bara "samhället" utan 
även "det mänskliga livet" ska "styras 
och planeras utifrån 'objektivt' fast-
lagda vetenskapliga lagar". 
Kommentar. Detta finner jag väl 
grovt. På vilka grunder kan man hävda 
att funktionalismen är uttryck för en

ambition att styra och planera det män-
skliga livet? Bör man inte skilja på 
styra och planera? Att bebyggelsens 
utformning och samhällets organisa-
tion medför möjligheter och begräns-
ningar för det mänskliga livet (oavsett 
vilken ideologi planeringen grundas 
på, vem som planerar eller om man 
avstår från att planera) är en sak. Att 
styra (som är ett uttryck för bestämda 
avsikter) det mänskliga livet är en an-
nan sak. 
Referat: Till ideologierna social 
ingenjörskonst och funktionalism hör 
"scientismen" (tror jag att redaktionen 
menar) som (1) är en dyrkan av veten-
skap och teknologi och (2) likställer ett 
högre livsvärde med ökande BNP. 
Denna kan också kritiseras för (3) "det 
a-historiska perspektivet", (4) "ett 
närsynt inriktande på det mätbara", (5) 
"konformismen" och (6) "bristen på 
djup och komplexitet". 
Kommentar. Detta kan förstås som 
en definition av "scientism" och då kan 
jag bara undra om det finns någon 
scientism i verkligheten? Men om man 
påstår att detta är drag som utmärker 
funktionalismen (och den sociala in-
genjörskonsten), så verkar det inte 
särskilt övertygande. (1) "Dyrkan" är 
väl inte rätt ord mot bakgrund av vad 
jag sagt tidigare. (2) Att likställa livs-
värde och BNP tror jag inte någon 
funktionalist har velat göra. I den 
marxistiska-socialdemokratiska tradi-
tion (som var en stark drivkraft för 
funktionalismen, påstår jag) har man 
lagt stor vikt vid den ekonomiska till-
växten, men det är väl ganska klart att 
det har handlat om att skapa materiella 
förutsättningar för ett bättre liv. En 
viktig fråga i denna tradition har också 
gällt fördelningen av det materiella 
som också var en central fråga i (den 
tidiga) funktionalismen. Dragen (3) 
och (4) kan jag, för enkelhets skull, 
hålla med om i någon mån. (5) Funk-
tionalismen utmärks kanske av kon-
formism i vissa avseenden, t ex det 
estetiska, men det är väl tveksamt om 
den är mer konform än tidigare epoker 
i detta avseende. Att jämföra med 
"gamla tiders religiösa föreställningar" 
tycker jag inte är så träffande. (6) För 
att ta ställning till om funktionalismen 
brister i djup och komplexitet vill jag 
nog dels få en närmare beskrivning av 
vad detta innebär, dels veta vad den 
jämförs med. 
Referat: Makthavare av alla slag har 
omfattat den sociala ingenjörskonsten 
som "den grundläggande utvecklings-
principen för det moderna demokra-
tiska industrisamhället". Kritiken mot 
denna princip har brett ut sig och för-
djupats. 
Kommentar. Kanske syftar redak-
tionen på de regleringar och den skat-
te-, social- och arbetsmarknadspolitik 
som man ägnar sig åt i kapitalistiska 
länder. Eftersom det är oklart vad 
principen innebär, är det svårt att ta 
ställning till om det är riktigt att kriti-

ken brett ut sig och fördjupats. Den 
nyliberala kritiken mot samhällsingri-
panden har ju varit stark och haft en 
viss effekt med mera privatisering, så 
kallade marknadslösningar och avreg-
lering. Jag undrar dock om det är den 
som redaktionen haft i åtanke. 
Referat: En typ av kritik mot den 
sociala ingenjörskonsten (och funktio-
nalismen) innebär att "viktiga mål som 
hygien, materiell levnadsstandard och 
social trygghet" uppnåtts "till priset av 
en kulturell och psykologisk utarm-
ning". Välståndet har betalats "med 
förluster i livskänsla och närhet". 
Kommentar. Här tycker jag definitivt 
att redaktionen har sänkt sig till kaf-
fesnacksnivå eller möjligen en bit un-
der. Vad som påstås är både konstigt 
och tvivelaktigt. Konstigheten består i 
antagandet om ett negativt samband 
mellan levnadsstandard etc och kultu-
rella etc värden. Är den påstådda ut-
armningen en nödvändig följd av (nå-
gon del av) funktionalismen? Eller 
förutsätter välstånd - oberoende av hur 
det uppstår - förluster i livskänsla och 
närhet? Jag tror inte att det finns några 
övertygande argument för vare sig den 
ena eller andra teorin. Allvarligare är 
väl att det inte finns något skäl att tro 
på påståendena om utarmning och 
förluster. Tanken måste ju vara att det 
någon gång har funnits kulturella och 
psykologiska värden som utarmats 
och livskänsla och närhet som förlo-
rats (som en följd av funktionalism 
och social ingenjörskonst). Rimligen 
avses någon förfunktionalistisk pe-
riod, kanske 1920- eller 1930-talet, 
kanske ännu tidigare. Vad vet någon 
över huvud taget om kulturella och 
psykologiska värden eller om livs-
känsla och närhet på den tiden jämfört 
med idag? Inte särskilt mycket kanske, 
men jag har svårt att föreställa mig att 
dessa värden skulle vara så mycket 
större i en tid med dålig hygien, mate-
riell nöd och otrygghet. Är inte sådana 
påståenden bara en variant av teorin 
om den lycklige vilden? 
Jag inser att man i en ledare tvingas 
vara kortfattad och göra grova förenk-
lingar. Den ledare det gäller här är 
dock ett tillräckligt tydligt uttryck för 
tankegångar som idag inte är särskilt 
originella. Framställningen är påtagligt 
ideologisk, nästan oberoende av hur 
man vill definera ideologi. Även den 
gamla marxistiska definitionen, falskt 
medvetande, passar bra. Hur man 
närmare ska karakterisera denna ideo-
logi, eller vad den bör kallas, vet jag 
inte. Är detta postmodernistiskt tän-
kande? Eller är det kanske snarare frå-
ga om den svenska arkitekturideologi-
varianten postfunktionalism? 
Med detta hoppas jag ha bidragit 
något till den ideologikritik som re-
daktionen uppmanar till. Jag ber om 
ursäkt för att den riktas åt ett annat håll 
än det redaktionen tycker är viktigast. 
En artikel hade förstås också varit 
bättre än ett debattinlägg.

Introduction 
Decisions concerning the control of artificial lighting in private office 
workplaces are typically made upon arrival and not adjusted or turned off 
until final departure. This is a conclusion from a study of daylighting poten-
tials in private office workplaces that include desktop computer (VDU) 
tasks (Sweitzer, 1990). This finding suggests two possibilities in order to 
better exploit the use of daylight in office buildings. 
The first, dimming of fluorescent lighting in office workplaces in re-
sponse to available daylight, has been studied for a range of hot and cold 
climates, window-to-wall ratios, and glazing types (Johnson et al 1983; 
Selkowitz et al 1983; Sweitzer et al 1987). A second alternative includes 
daylighting of adjacent corridors as well and, integrated dimming of both 
corridor and office lighting in response to available daylight. 
This second alternative has not been simulated or assessed in practice 
although currently available means to admit daylight into interior corri-
dors (via light pipes, prismatic panels, and electrochromic glazings) have 
been explored (Sweitzer, 1991). In addition, there is an existing computer 
program that can be used to visualize the effects of and provide luminance 
information for these advanced technologies.

Concept 
The approach to and departure from the office workplace is typically via 
an adjacent corridor. The distribution of luminances in the corridor therefore 
can affect visual adapation that may be critical to the switching of lighting 
in offices, especially upon initial arrival. If the luminances in the corridor 
and office are similar, little if any additional adaptation in the office should 
be required. If there are significant differences in the luminances, however, 
visual adaptation can require considerable time, depending upon whether 
the change is from lighter or from darker as well as upon the magnitude of 
the differences. 
While adaptation when changing from dark to light luminances requires 
only a few seconds, adaptation to change from light to dark is a substantially 
slower process. This might well be the case, for example, upon initial (mor-
ning) arrival to private offices during winter periods. The most common 
response to this situation is to switch on at least room lighting, in part be-
cause the switch is usually located just inside the office door. 
In response to these limitations, the following lighting control concept, 
that includes both automatic dimming and manually adjustable task light-
ing, is proposed: 
* Provide sensor-controlled dimming of room lighting (in response to 
available daylight) in offices and corridors; 
* Provide on/off switching of office room lighting at the conventional 
location, just inside the door; 
* Provide manual on/off switching and adjustment of task lighting only 
at task position(s); 
* Provide a motion or temperature sensor control to automatically turn 
off the task lighting when the occupant is absent; 
* Provide for automatic balancing of (paper, for example) task and 
VDU screen luminances (Sweitzer, 1989) according to preset perso-
nal preferences or criteria in response to available daylight and room 
lighting. 
The aim of these controls is to optimize the use of available daylight for 
offices and corridors while providing incentives for personally controlled 
office task lighting. The location of controls for task lighting is intended to 
allow time, however short, for adaptation to room conditions. Improved 
visual comfort for office occupants as well as lowered demand for electric 
lighting are the intended results.

The referenced study of daylighting potentials in VDU office workplaces 
in Sweden included eight similarly-sized and -furnished private office 
workplaces (see Figures 1 and 2), all along a single double-loaded corridor 
in an early 60s office building. 
The study in each office included observations, an interview with the 
occupant, a self-reporting questionnaire, luminance measurements, and 
photographs. 
The observations focused on how each office occupant used their win-
dows and electric lights throughout the (overcast winter) study day. 
Each interview meanwhile included questions concerning occupant 
attitudes and the planning and control of - as well as ideas to improve - the 
physical conditions, especially lighting, in each workplace. The question-
naire was used to better define VDU use, visual comfort, and mood. Lumi-
nance measurements were made in the field of view of (VDU) operator

positions as were photographs. Overall room photographs were also docu-
mented (figure 2). 
The study concluded that office worker knowledge of lighting VDU 
tasks in the offices studied is neither being exploited to improve visual 
comfort nor to reduce electricity use. It further concluded that there are 
apparently satisfied users for a wide range of connected lighting power 
densities, ranging from 3.2 W/m2 to 31.3 W/m2 versus the installed range 
of 31.3 W/m2 to 56.2 W/m2. The second major finding was that no light 
switching was noted in any of the offices during the study day; that is, the 
electric lighting selected upon arrival was not altered. 
Both of these findings suggest that dimming of electric room, and per-
haps task lighting, could be used to save electricity without compromising 
visual comfort. In addition, given access to daylight, corridor lighting 
could also be dimmed, thereby limiting visual adaptation between the 
spaces and therefore, reducing demand for electric lighting upon initial 
arrival. 
Visualization 
How might this and other alternate lighting scenarios be assessed during 
the design stage? Specifically, how might the potential effects of adaptation 
on room lighting be visualized, by both designers and users? Could a tool 
that combines both visual qualities and luminance information be useful in 
estimating electricity use? 
A computer tool that provides both visual images and luminance 
information, RADIANCE, now exisits. It is a ray tracing package that can 
take a scene description with a light source, including sky, building, rooms, 
and furniture and produce spectral radiance values which can be collected 
in a color image. As a lighting design tool, this represents a signifcant 
advance in the state of the art. 
For the office and corridor case studied, these capabilities might be 
further extended. Realistic scenes might be rendered that account for 
different levels of visual adaptation. In this way, a luminance map of each 
workplace could be documented and updated as appropriate. Based on 
such maps, different lighting scenarios could be constructed and, according 
to specified lighting criteria, electricity savings estimated. 
Summary 
The integration of day- and electric lighting in a specific office and corridor 
adjacency has been explored. Sensor-controlled dimming of office (room)

lighting in response to available daylight is proposed for both spaces. This 
would limit, presumably, the need for visual adaptation and, therefore, 
switching on of room lighting upon initial arrival. Control of task lighting 
is proposed at the task location only. It is hypothesized that this control 
concept can be used to further limit demand for electric lighting without 
compromising visual comfort, based on the findings of a previous study. 
A design tool, RADIANCE, that provides visual images as well as nu-
merical (luminance) quantities might be used to assess alternate lighting 
schemes, including those where temporal aspects such as visual adaptation 
might be critical. With this information, the lighting of office workplaces 
could be made more personal and energy efficient.
