Ninety nine, one-day-old Marshall Broiler chicks were used in a 28 day feeding trial to evaluate effects of partial replacement of maize with 2:1:1 combination of plantain (Musa paradisiaca) peels (PP), yam (Dioscorea alata) peels (YP) and palm (Elaeis guineensis) kernel cake (PKC) respectively in broiler starter diets. Three experimental diets were formulated, diet T1 (control) contained 0% PP, YP, PKC. In diets T2 and T3 25 and 50%, respectively, of maize was replaced with 2:1:1 combination of PP, YP and PKC. These diets were assigned randomly to three groups of 33 chicks; each replicated three times to give 9 replicates 11 chicks in each in a completely randomized design experiment. Feed and water were offered ad libitum. Results indicated that body weight gain and feed cost (N/kg) were significantly lower (p < 0.05) in T3 with 50% level of maize replacement than others. Palabras clave: Tílides, Musaceae, Fusarium oxysporumABSTRACTPlants develop mechanic barriers among which are the amount and quality of surface serum, cell wall thickness, and width of protective tissue cells, which make difficult for pathogenic agents to penetrate. Anatomical and morphological characters of plant roots were compared in ‘Manzano’ and ‘Gran Enano’ banana plants, susceptible and resistant to Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense (race 1), respectively, obtained from a commercial farm in Trujillo state, to analyze theirrelationship with their resistance or susceptibility to the Panamá disease. Three plants per cultivar were used. Roots were subdivided in three sections: basal, middle and apex and their thickness were measured with a vernier. Semi-permanent preparations with free hand transversal sections of the root were obtained, stained with safranin, mounted with water:glicerol (1:1) and observed with an Olympus Bx40 microscope at 500X. Statistical differences were found between cultivars with regard to root thickness, but not among root sections within each clone. ‘Manzano’ banana roots were thicker (5.00 mm) than the ‘Grand Nain’ ones (3.54 mm). Significant differences were not observed between clons but they were among sections. Cortex width in ‘Gran Enano’ was less than in ‘Manzano’ and no differences were observed among root sections. Diameter of vascular cylinder was similar in both clones and increased from the apex to the base. The total number of vessels was higher in ‘Manzano’ roots; however, root sections did not show differences. Most of the vessels were not damaged, thus they would continue to be active conducting water and nutrients. There was not evidence of the association of the anatomical and morphological characteristics with resistance or susceptibility to pests.Key words: Tilides, Musaceae, Fusarium wilt

Palabras clave: Sustrato, producción de plántulas, guayaba, germinación, alturaABSTRACTThe objective was to evaluate the effect of different substrate combinations on the production of seedlings of guava. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with four replications. Substrate mixtures were based on weight and in equal proportions. The used treatments were: sand, soil, bagasse, sand + soil, sand + bagasse, soil + bagasse and sand + soil + bagasse. Germination percentage (GP) was evaluated at 13 days after sowing (das) on an ongoing basis until 17 days and it was measured at 27, 32, 37 and 47 das. Also, mean number of days to complete germination (MNDCG) and rate of germination speed (RGS) were evaluated and also percentage of lost plants lost (PLP) was measured. Plant height (PH) was measured from 37 das at intervals of 10 days to 122 das and the rate of height growth (RHG) was evaluated at 122 das. Ananalysis of variance was performed and differences among treatments were determined by least significant difference test (p ≤ 0.05). The biggest GP at 15, 16 and 17 das was observed in sand with 12.50, 30.00 and 47.08%, respectively, while at 27 das, in sand ocurred the largest GP (78.75 %), being similar to bagasse and sand + bagasse. At 47 das, sand showed thehighest GP (84.58%), surpassing the substrates sand + soil and soil (55.83 and 45.42%, respectively) and the biggest RGS (6.3) was similar to substrates bagasse and sand + bagasse. No significant differences were found for MNDCG, PLP and PH at 37 and 47 das with averages of 25.2 days, 94.34%, 2.43 cm and 2.68 cm, respectively. The tallest plant at 57 ocurred in sand + soil, soil and sand, while at 67, 77, 87, 97, 107 and 122 dds and TCA the biggest values occurred in soil and sand + soil with values of 22.23 and 20.09 cm, respectively for the 122 dds. These results suggest the use of soil and sand + soilsubstrates for the production of seedlings of guava increasing the number of seeds in the sowing bag.Key words: Substrate, seedling production, guava, germination, heigh

Manejo y disposición final de desechos de mercurio en clínicas odontológicas públicas del estado Monagas, Venezuela | Handling and final disposal of mercury wastes in public dental clinics in Monagas state, Venezuela

Palabras clave: Mercurio, clínicas odontológicas, desechos tóxicos ABSTRACT Mercury is a heavy metal, neurotoxin, responsible for great amount of effects on the health of animals and human beings if it is not manipulated suitably. It can be found in numerous products of hospital use like thermometers, dilatators, fluorescent tubes of nutrition, batteries, lamps, thermostats, etc. Its form of more frequent absorption is by inhalation, although also it is possible by digestive tract and skin. The dental amalgam preparation contributes to the mercurial contamination since in its elaboration, mercury remainders are generated which are detrimental if a suitable handling does not occur. With the intention of evaluating the handling and the final disposition of the mercury remainders in dental public clinics of the Monagas state, a study between the months of June to October, 2006 was carried out in order to make a diagnosis of the operation of these establishments of public health and to determine if it is fulfilled 2.218 rule (Norms for the classification and handling of remainders in health establishments) and 2.635 one (Norms for the control of the recovery of the dangerous materials and the handling of dangerous remainders). For it a descriptive investigation was done in a total of 27 distributed dental clinics in all Municipalities of the Monagas state. The data were analyzed of descriptive way in values absolute and percentage and presented in tables and figures, which allowed elucidating and inferring on them. Public dental clinics of the Monagas state received an average of 50 capsules of mercury by month and 77% of them use inadequate storage packages of mercury remainders, 70% do not fulfill with the specified in the article 6.c of rule 2,221 on Norms for the control of the generation and handling of toxic and dangerous remainders. Exist in Monagas state, more than 30 kg of mercury remainders in dental public clinics. Key words: Mercury, dental clinics, toxic wast

Palabras clave: Ácaro fitófago, pudrición apical del fruto, guayabo.ABSTRACTA experiment was conducted to determine the relationship between the mite Brevipalpus phoenicis and Dothiorella sp. Twenty plants from a experimental orchard located at the Centro Frutícola del Zulia, Mara (10º 49’ 98’’LN and 71º 46’ 33’’LO) were selected and treated with the purpose of obtaining fruit with and without mite injuries, and inoculated or not with Dothiorella, applying a mitecide (Peropal®), fungicides (Bavistín® and Captan®) and aspersions of Dothiorella innoculum according to each treatment. The fruits were harvested at 14, 21, 28, 35, 49, 56 y 84 days post-anthesis (dpa). Mites were counted at sepals (abaxial and adaxially), peduncles and berry. The presence of Dothiorella was verified placing the fruit on PDA for the growth of the fungi and with histological sections to locate the pycnidia in the apical portion of the fruit. SAS Program, Tukey´s and Frecuency Analysis were used to analyze the data. Dothiorella was present in 1.79% of the fruits inoculated or not with conidia of the fungi, in absence of mites at 84 and 14 dpa respectively. The hystological analysis found one fruit with Dothiorella treated with innoculum and with no mites at 84 dpa. The results could not demostrate if the injuries caused by the mites facilitate the entrance of Dothiorella, since fruits were the miteswere present and the inocullum of Dothiorella was applied was not verified on PDA, this coud have happened for unfavourable climatic conditions for the inocullum in the field. Mites fluctuated depending on the treatmentsand the age of the fruitis and its parts, the highest mean mite was at 35 dpa on abaxial sepals.Key words: Phytophagous mite, stylar-end rot disease, guava

Hartón) in tropical dry forest in the south zone of Maracaibo Lake, Venezuela

Palabras clave: Micobiota del plátano, bosque seco tropical, sur del lago de Maracaibo, antagonista.ABSTRACTWith the purpose of identifying the micobiotic existence in plantations of plantain in a dry tropical forest in the south zone of Maracaibo Lake, Zulia state, Venezuela; the soil close to the plants in phenological stage of pre flowering was analyzed, the soil samples came from: El Canal, Santa Rosa, El Chivo, Las Rurales, Mata de Coco, El Paraiso, Dos Morales, Km 18, Puerto Concha and Janeiro. The analysis was done by using the soil dilution method until a 10-3 concentration was obtained; this last one was planted with three repetitions in Petri capsules with agar-water. Once the colonies were developed, theunits of forming fungi colonies (UFC) by Petri capsule were observed and accounted. The funguses were isolated in potato dextrosa agar, with the purpose of obtaining pure culture for its identification. From the soil samples, 19 isolates were collected and identified as: Aspergillus sp., Beauveria sp., Cladosporium sp., Colletotrichum sp., Penicillium sp., Sclerotium sp., Tilletiopsis sp., and Trichoderma sp.; the quantification of UFC of fungus determined that the place, El Canal, was the one with more biodiversity comparing to other sectors. Among the isolated funguses were identified three genders Beauveria sp., Tilletiopsis sp., and Trichoderma harzianum, which are considered as potential antagonist. It was concluded that within the tested zone, the existent biodiversity is numerous, in spite of counting with dry forest conditions, this can be the result of the sample selection criteria of non technical cropping systems and none of isolated funguses within the investigation presented pathological qualities to the plantain cultivation. The genders of funguses considered as potential antagonist could be used as possible biological control agents of main pests that affect plantain crops.Key words: Plantain mycobiota, tropical dry forest, south zone of Maracaibo Lake, antagonist

Ex-. ABSTRACT Soil field analysis is difficult due to spatial variability and heterogeneity resulting from various factors of soil formation. Care must be taken to ensure accurate sampling, such as selecting the right equipment and the manner in which sampling is performed. The objective was to compare the method Uhland in free and forced fall down of the hammer, with the nuclear density gauge to evaluate in situ dry density (ρS), the wet density (ρh) and the solidity ratio (iS), at two depths (0-150 y 150- 300 mm) in three sandy loam soils of Monagas State, Venezuela. Methodologically it was used a factorial arrangement with three soils, three methods and two depths (3*3*2) in a randomized block with five repetitions with three replicates, ANOVA, means and coefficients of variation of the treatments were compared with the LSD test and analysis of statistical graphics. The dry density, wet density and the ratio of strength by the method of nuclear densometer showed the lowest values with statistically significant differences compared to those obtained with the free and forced Uhland fall in the three soils. The mean values were lower in Uhland for free fall with no significant difference for the three soils. For the depth of 150 to 300 mm the average values of bulk density and solidity ratio were significantly higher. The analysis of the variation coefficients showed differences in results depending on soil and moisture with the lowest values for the densitometer. Palabras clave: Ateroesclerosis, dislipidemia, enfermedad cardiovascular, LES.ABSTRACTThe Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), is a chronic inflammatory disease that is associated with an accelerate development of atherosclerosis, which contributes with elevated rates morbid-mortality in patients with this disease. The prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors and biomarkers of inflammation in patients with SLE was evaluated in comparison with a control group. The sample consisted of 70 patients with SLE and 70 controls. The clinical, anthropometric and biochemical variables as well as inflammatory parameters were analyzed. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and both groups were compared using the Student's t-test and Fisher's exact test; both with a level of significance p ≤ 0.05. The odds ratio [OR] and its corresponding 95% confidence interval IC95% [OR] was also calculated in order to characterize the association. Patients with SLE presented an average age of 44.1 ± 11.2 years, 60.6% women and 39.4% men, meanwhile the control group was characterized by an average age of 52.9 ± 6.4 years, 52.8%, women and 47.1% males. Among the cardiometabolic factors evaluated, the waist/hip index, body mass index, glycaemia, creatinine, total cholesterol, VLDL-c and triglycerides were significantly higher in the patients than in the controls. HDL-c concentrations were significantly decreased in both study groups. Inflammatory parameters: counting leukocytes, Globular Sedimentation Rate (ESR), fibrinogen, interleukins (IL-6, IL-8) and C-Reactive Protein (CRP) were significantly higher in the LES group than in the control group. Patients with SLE presented a proinflammatory and dyslipidemic state, that favors the development of cardiovascular disease, associated with a higher incidence of cardiometabolic risk factors and inflammation biomarkers.Key words: Atherosclerosis, Dyslipidemia, Cardiovascular Disease, SLE.
