Inégalités et solidarités en agriculture. Signification d'un débat
Inequalities and solidarity in agriculture the significance of the debate - No branch of activity ever pointed out their internal inequalities more vigorously ! And no internal inequalities were ever so stimatized by their environment ! The explanation of this phenomenon may be found in the concept of the family farm, in the hereditary character of these inequalities or the responsibility of the price-fixing policy, in the impossibility to claim a parity with other branches without reducing internal disparities first. Yet, however great the disparities, farmers do not regard them as contrary to a unified vision of the farming universe. Generally speaking, in a period of structural changes it seems more important to secure equal chances than to attempt an equalization of situations
La France dans la prospective alimentaire mondiale
The major part of the World population suffers from undernourishment or inadequate food diets and many live in a state of permanent starvation. In most developing countries, an increase of farm production is possible but richer countries will still have to maintain a substantial food aid during the transition period which is likely to last for some time. Now, the French farm potential is not fully utilized and could be adapted to the needs of developing countries. The wheat acreages could substitute grassland on some two and a half million acres, the loss of which could be compensated by an intensification of feed crops. However, the difficulties of implementing such a policy must not be overlooked
Le débat sur le productivisme
This debate bears on the analysis of the development process in French agriculture since the end of the 1950-ties. The socioeconomic situation which was drastically changed by the crisis may not allow a process where a more and more expensive and scarse capital continues to drive farm labour towards sectors with severe unemployment. The main issues of the debate are : the capital necessary for a « productivistic » system, the marginalisation of certain areas, the expansion of production structures, the intensification of animal production (especially dairying) and plant production through biological progress... the impact of national and international outlets on production systems and the deference of farm incomes, the farmers' claims to better living and working conditions, less foreign dépendance of the food and farm industry... On an aggregate level, the objectives appear inconsistent. In fact, it is the coherent choice of ways and means which will settle point by point the debate on « productivism »
