    The Critical Montessori Model: Supporting the BIPOC Community Through Montessori Research and Practice

    Despite an increase in race-related Montessori research over the past decade, the Montessori community lacks a unified framework to examine the Montessori Method and its philosophy through a critical racial lens. Without explicit discussions or universal training about race and whiteness, the Montessori Method can be interpreted through a color-blind lens unless scholars and practitioners explicitly use a critical racial perspective. This paper proposes the Critical Montessori Model (CMM), which centers high-fidelity Montessori practice—including the Montessori materials, child development, respect for and relationships with children, and observation as a learning tool—encompassed by critical race theory, as a way for researchers and practitioners to interpret the Montessori Method. This theoretical model critiques systems of whiteness and instead proposes centering the lived experiences and knowledge of the BIPOC community, drawing from theories such as culturally relevant/sustaining pedagogy and community cultural wealth (CCW). The hope is that this model will be the start of calibration among critical Montessori research to unify Montessori practitioners in their interpretations of Montessori education and the possibilities it provides for anti-racist education that centers Black, Indigenous, and other people of color (BIPOC). The paper ends with recommendations for future research using the CMM as a framework and calls for more BIPOC voices to be highlighted in the Montessori research community.

    Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus in Movies: The Hollywood Effect

     Introduction. Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) is one of the most common chronic diseases with childhood onset. Cinematic films and movies have the capability to reach populations worldwide and effect their concept of this disease. This research examined the accuracy of these movies depicting T1D from childhood into adulthood. Methods. We conducted an internet search of several databases that resulted in a list of 39 movies from 2000 to 2022 with characters that had diabetes. We ultimately assessed 13 fictional movies that dealt with management of disease, character development, access to care, and complications.  Results. Movies portray severe but rare diabetes manifestations such as comas. They emphasize access to basic diabetes supplies and cost of care. Only starting in 2020, a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and insulin pumps are shown. Female characters are presented as resilient and unaffected by the struggles of their T1D. Conclusions. This sample of fictional movies portrays extreme T1D symptoms and mostly outdated technology for monitoring and treatment. It would be beneficial if future movies reflected the advances in closed-loop CGM/insulin pumps. It is important for clinicians to be aware of how the movie industry is presenting the disease to their patients. Clinicians can use popular movies to start difficult discussions with their patients about topics pertinent to the comprehensive care of T1D

    BEHAVIORAL RESPONSES OF ADULT AND NEONATE SCELOPORUS CONSOBRINUS LIZARDS TO PREDATORY ODORS

    Abstract: Lizards of the genus Sceloporus are known for their ability to detect conspecific odors. This study will determine whether they can also use their chemosensory abilities to detect the odors of one of their predators: Coluber flagellum (Coachwhip snake). The experiment also looked for differences in behavioral reactions to predator odors between adult and neonate lizards. Behaviors lizards displayed in response to predatory snake odors on sheets of filter paper were recorded and compared to behaviors lizards showed to a series of control odors (water, pungent odor, and non-predatory snake odor). We recorded the number of tongue flicks, substrate touches, glass jumps, tail wiggles, time spent cage dancing, time spent in retreat, and amount of time spent on filter paper by testing lizards for all four odor treatments. There were no significant differences in the number of times these behaviors were performed by lizards among the treatments. Thus, this study found no evidence that Sceloporus can distinguish the odors of the predatory snake C. flagellum from other odors. However, this study did show that neonate lizards exhibited fewer odor detection behaviors than adults, in particular adult males, and so are potentially less able to detect odors

    Anurans in forest fragments along the upper Glória River, Minas Gerais, Brazil

    The Brazilian Atlantic Forest is a biodiversity hotspot, harboring many endemic species threatened byanthropogenic actions. Although less than 15% of the natural vegetation remains, this biome currently supports morethan 600 amphibian species, representing more than half of Brazilian amphibian diversity. However, a notable lack ofinformation regarding the richness and distribution of this taxonomic group in this biome persists. To fill in some gapsin our knowledge, we provide a checklist of anurans from a highly fragmented unprotected area of the Atlantic Forestin southeastern Brazil. Through fieldwork and bibliographic review, we recorded 44 species in the area, a noteworthyassemblage, especially when compared with the nearest protected area, which harbors 58 species. Additionally, weprovide novel data about the critically endangered Garcia’s Small Frog (Ischnocnema garciai), discuss potential impactsrelated to the presence of American Bullfrogs (Aquarana catesbeiana) in the area, and document amphibian mortalitydue to electric fences. In summary, we show that even fragmented and unprotected areas of the Atlantic Forest stillharbor substantial anuran diversity
