    Advances in immunotherapy for HNSCC

    Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSCC) is a cancer that originates in the mucosal surfaces of the head and neck, including the mouth, throat, and larynx. Immunotherapy has emerged as a promising treatment for HNSCC, especially for patients whose cancers are resistant to traditional therapies such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. In this minireview article, we summarized the role of immunotherapy in HNSCC. Checkpoint inhibitors are a class of immunotherapy that work by blocking certain proteins that suppress the immune system’s ability to attack cancer cells. In HNSCC, the most studied checkpoint inhibitors are PD-1/PD-L1 Inhibitors. These include drugs like Pembrolizumab (Keytruda) and Nivolumab (Opdivo). PD-1 is a protein on immune cells that, when engaged by its ligands (PD-L1 on cancer cells), dampens the immune response. Blocking PD-1 helps reactivate the immune system to recognize and destroy cancer cells. Drugs like Atezolizumab (Tecentriq) target the PD-L1 protein, which is often upregulated in cancer cells to escape immune surveillance. By blocking PD-L1, these drugs prevent cancer cells from evading the immune system. These checkpoint inhibitors have shown efficacy in advanced or recurrent HNSCC, particularly in patients whose tumors express PD-L1. Combination strategies that combine immunotherapy with other treatments, such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or targeted therapy, are also being explored to enhance the effectiveness of immunotherapy in HNSCC. These combinations can help overcome resistance mechanisms and potentially improve outcomes. Chemotherapy may induce immune-stimulatory effects, making the tumor more sensitive to immunotherapy. Radiation can induce "immunogenic cell death," releasing tumor antigens that can enhance the immune system’s response to the cancer when combined with checkpoint inhibitors. While immunotherapy has shown promising results in treating HNSCC, several challenges remain. For example, not all tumors respond equally to immunotherapy, and some cancers develop resistance over time. Tumors can create a microenvironment that suppresses immune activity, making it difficult for immunotherapies to work effectively. Immune-related side effects, such as inflammation or autoimmunity, can occur with checkpoint inhibitors. Research continues into refining biomarkers for patient selection, optimizing combination therapies, and finding ways to overcome resistance. In conclusion, immunotherapy represents a major advancement in the treatment of HNSCC, offering new hope for patients with advanced or recurrent disease. Ongoing research is focusing on improving the efficacy, safety, and applicability of these therapies, with the goal of enhancing patient outcomes and expanding their use across different subtypes of HNSCC

    Ground-Water Resources of Republic County and Northern Cloud County, Kansas

    This report describes the geography, geology, and ground-water resources of Republic County and northern Cloud County in north-central Kansas. The area embraces a total of 25 townships, or 899 square miles. The area is drained by the Republican River and its tributaries. The climate is subhumid, the average annual precipitation being about 26 inches. Wheat farming, cattle raising, and general farming are the principal occupations in the area. The rocks exposed in Republic County and northern Cloud County are of Cretaceous and Quaternary age. The areal distribution of the formations is shown in Plate 1. The oldest formation cropping out in the area is the Dakota formation of Cretaceous age, which is exposed in the southeastern part of Republic County and in northern Cloud County. The overlying Graneros shale and Greenhorn limestone of Cretaceous age are best. exposed in the eastern and southern parts of Republic County along the edges of the streams where the overlying Carlile shale has been eroded away. The Carlile shale mantles the upland areas in the west-central, central, and eastern parts of Republic County. The Pleistocene deposits, which include the Belleville formation, and the loess deposits, comprise the surface materials in a large area in northern Republic County. The soils and alluvium are the youngest deposits in the area. Test drilling revealed that the ancestral Republican River channel entered Republic County 5 miles south of the Nebraska State line, crossed the present channel near Republic City, and entered Nebraska near Chester. The report contains a map showing by contours the shape and slope of the water table in the Republican River Valley and in the ancestral Republican River Valley. The map shows that ground water moves into the Republican Valley from both sides. The depth to the water table ranges from less than 10 feet in the Republican Valley to more than 100 feet in the upland in northern Republic County. The ground-water reservoir is recharged principally by precipitation that falls within the area, by the addition of water from Republican River, and by underflow from adjacent areas. Water is discharged from the ground-water reservoir by seepage into Republican River, by underflow eastward and southward into adjacent areas, by transpiration and evaporation in areas of shallow water table, and by wells. All of the domestic, stock, and public water supplies and a part of the irrigation water supplies are obtained from wells. Most of the domestic and stock wells in the Republican Valley are driven. Most of the wells on the upland are drilled or bored. The use of ground water for irrigation has barely started. At the time of the field investigation there were only four active irrigation wells in the Republican River Valley in Cloud and Republic counties. Five other wells formerly were used for irrigation. The ground water in the alluvium and the Belleville formation is hard but it is generally suitable for most ordinary uses. In local areas in northern Cloud County it is highly mineralized. Waters from the Dakota formation in the outcrop areas are relatively soft but they are generally highly mineralized in other areas. The field data upon which most of this report is based are given in tables, and include records of 291 wells and chemical analyses of the water from 58 wells. Logs of 126 test holes are also given

    Geology and Ground-Water Resources of Neosho County, Kansas

    Neosho County has an area of 576 square miles and is within the Osage Plains section of the Central Lowlands province of eastern Kansas. Sedimentary rocks of Cambrian, Ordovician, Devonian(?), Mississippian, Pennsylvanian, Tertiary, and Quaternary ages overlie the Precambrian basement complex, and they have a thickness of 2,100 feet. Rocks exposed in the county are of Pennsylvanian, Tertiary, and Quaternary ages that attain a thickness of 700 feet. Structure is controlled by the Prairie Plains Monocline in which the exposed Pennsylvanian rocks dip northwest at about 20 feet per mile. Wells in consolidated rocks of Pennsylvanian age yield less than 1 gallon per minute of water from some limestone and shale aquifers to more than 30 gallons per minute from sandstone aquifers. The water from the consolidated aquifers is highly mineralized, but the sandstones tend to yield a softer, less mineralized water. Wells within unconsolidated Pleistocene alluvial deposits yield up to 30 gallons per minute. The chief use of the ground water is for domestic and stock purposes, whereas all municipal systems use treated surface water. The estimated total use of ground water in 1961 was 109 million gallons (334 acre-feet)

    ¿Época 60? Tal cual, con este tropo, denomino al periodo en que la sociedad chilena, impulsada por gobiernos sobre todo de izquierda (E. Frei, S. Allende), reinventa los contornos de su paisaje mediante leyes de reforma agraria (1962, 1967, 1970) y nacionalización de recursos naturales (1964, 1971).     Standardized protocol for collecting bee samples for internal parasite and pathogen data

    Internal parasites and pathogens have not been a focus of wild bee systematic data collection efforts to-date but are important to document because they have been strongly linked to bee declines. Here, we provide a standardized protocol for collecting fresh bee tissue samples for generating parasite and pathogen data. The protocol emphasizes appropriate handling and storage conditions and data standards. It can be embedded within bee health monitoring projects or used by individual data collection efforts that aim to generate parasite and pathogen data now and in the future. This protocol is part of a series developed in association with the U.S. National Native Bee Monitoring Network to standardize bee monitoring practices.

    The Impact of Esports on the Habits, Health, and Wellness of the Collegiate Player

    College students continue to invest a good deal of time in electronic sports despite potential risks such as addiction, health impairment, and social isolation possibly outweighing the benefits of gameplay. This mixed-methods study examines the impact of esports on 38 collegiate gamers and further explores the students’ motivations, gaming habits, and the effects of their engagement on academic performance, social interactions, and overall well-being. It reveals that esports may be beneficial in the formation of friendships, reducing negative peer pressure, and enhancing social capital. Academic advantages are also prominent, with participants reporting improved skills relevant to their coursework, better grades, and an enhanced focus on academics due to the structured nature of esports. However, the study also addresses potential risks, including toxicity, addiction, and adverse health effects like sleep deprivation and stress. Included are critical considerations and policy recommendations for campus esports programs as well as future research directions
