An unexpected opportunity to video record an attempted natural habitat predation of an adult Thamnophis sirtalis by a subadult Coluber constrictor allowed detailed examination of predator and defensive strategies of both snakes. Slow playback of the recording, with occasional frame-by-frame viewing, clearly showed the entirely visual hunting mechanism of C. constrictor. It also showed the detailed and unmistakable cognition and intentionality employed by the T. sirtalis to repeatedly evade and misdirect the vision-based attack of the C. constrictor. Our observations, along with the openly available archived video, add to the growing body of knowledge on snake cognition and intentionality in natural habitats

Living on the edge: Status of Eurycea lucifuga (Cave Salamander) and Gyrinophilus porphyriticus (Spring Salamander) at the periphery of their ranges in Mississippi, USA

The northeastern corner of Mississippi is at the southwestern periphery of the Cumberland Plateau, andlittle is known about most of the salamander species in this region. Especially for Cave Salamanders (Eurycea lucifuga)and Spring Salamanders (Gyrinophilus porphyriticus), much of what we know is based on anecdotal encounters. BothE. lucifuga and G. porphyriticus are state-endangered in Mississippi and both are considered species of greatest conservationneed. To further assess their conservation status, we completed distribution and encounter-rate surveys duringJuly/August 2021–2023 in Tishomingo County, Mississippi. For E. lucifuga, we completed 37 surveys at ten caves androck-face recesses (total effort: 35.8 person-hours). We made 32 observations of E. lucifuga at four sites (catch-per-uniteffort [CPUE]: 1.5/h), and also opportunistically documented the species along two Hartselle Sandstone rock facesduring a related study of Green Salamanders (Aneides aeneus). For G. porphyriticus, we completed 65 surveys at 36 sitesthat included caves, streams, springs/seeps, and waterfall-splash zones (total effort: 92.4 person-hours) and conductedleaf-litter-bag sampling at three streams in 2022. We observed a total of eight G. porphyriticus during surveys (twoadults and six larvae from three different sites) (CPUE: 0.06/h); two of the six larvae were captured in 84 leaf-litter-bagchecks (CPUE: 0.02/bag check). Both E. lucifuga and G. porphyriticus appear to be rare members of the salamandercommunity in northeastern Mississippi, as both are known from fewer than 10 localities in Mississippi and have lowencounter rates. Periodic surveys are needed to determine if future changes occur in the distribution or abundance ofeither species. Future surveys, especially on private properties, could reveal additional localities for both species

Representaciones de la dictadura chilena a 50 años: dramaturgias y trauma psicosocial

    No full text
In 2023, Chile commemorated the 50th anniversary of the coup d\u27état that installed a bloody civil and military dictatorship that lasted 17 years, whose psychosocial and political consequences are still felt today. In the run-up to this commemoration, we asked ourselves the question of how the dictatorship has been represented in the theater scene over the last 50 years: what have been the themes and characters; what role has theater played in relation to the dictatorship; how the Chilean theater scene has represented the scene of the traumatic that the dictatorship installed. We thus developed a research, positioned in 2022, with the objective of analyzing how the Chilean civil and military dictatorship has been represented and symbolized in the Chilean theater scene since the coup d\u27état to date. After compiling from diverse sources a large number of plays premiered during 50 years, a corpus of plays was selected, which were grouped by decades, considering the date of their premiere. The playscripts of each group of plays were analyzed in an attempt to reconstruct recurrences and diversities in their representation of the dictatorship along three axes: the privileged theme brought to the stage; the playwriting strategies implemented; and the psychosocial meanings of what was represented. In this paper, we present the first results of this research and its projections.
