From the Bible to Brecht\u27s Theatre: Translation, Intertextuality, or a New Narrative? The Judgement of Solomon and the Judgement of Azdak
There is a complex connection between justice and truth. Comparing Solomon’s story in the biblical Book of Kings with the The Caucasian Chalk Circle by Bertold Brecht, a different way of viewing those relations can be recognised. By changing the premise about what is considered the factual truth the logic inference on how to decide each case leads us to a different conclusion.
The choice of this principle depends on the ethics and on the concept of justice one has. This choice relies on historic and social context. The premises about motherhood are different in both the Bible and Brecht\u27s theatre. The question "who deserves a child" is replaced by "what is best for the child". AI algorithms could also help to understand what are we thinking while deciding these cases. Understanding how we think provides an opportunity for us to reframe our premises
A Scoping Umbrella Review of Competency-Based Education: Part I – A Descriptive Analysis of Trends, Practices, and Gaps
Competency-based education (CBE) has been increasingly adopted and popularized across diverse disciplines and professional fields. However, its implementation faces challenges due to the absence of a unified framework. Part I of this study aims to explore different theoretical approaches to CBE and to identify key approaches, emerging trends, and focal areas across diverse educational contexts, fields, and regions. A scoping umbrella review was conducted to synthesize evidence on CBE from systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and other reviews. Searches were performed across five databases by an experienced librarian, focusing on CBE frameworks and outcomes. Only peer-reviewed articles published in English were included. Four reviewers screened articles using Covidence software, resolving disagreements through discussion and collaboration. The umbrella review of 36 articles reveals key trends: (1) most are literature or systematic reviews, (2) published between 2017 and 2022, (3) primarily from the U.S. and Canada, and (4) focused on higher education and medical/health sciences. The review identifies three categories of theoretical approaches: theories, models, and frameworks. This review highlights the evolving theoretical foundations of CBE and its expansion across disciplines. The integration of various theories, models, and frameworks into a cohesive meta-framework emerges as a critical next step

Rediscovering the Child: Review of Montessori Educator Research Projects 2024–2025
This article is part of our annual series “Rediscovering the Child” which began as an effort to disseminate high quality practitioner and classroom-based action research (CBAR) that does not typically have a widely accessible forum. CBAR is powerful because it is conducted in real classrooms with real children by practitioners with real-world problems they wish to address. We highlight several studies each year that we hope will inspire other practitioners to formalize their classroom inquiry to share with the wider community. We also hope that practitioners in the field can reflect on their own practice by learning about how other educators are addressing the challenges they face. First, we include with studies that focus on the whole child by exploring the impact of outdoor play and engagement with nature through papers by two authors: Speakmanova and Lederer. We also consider work by Dinkler that looks at the role of music in holistic development and prosocial behavior. Next, we examine papers addressing the academic subjects of reading and math. The first of the academic focused papers is by Allred and Johnson who explore reading development for early childhood students who did not have 3-year-old Montessori experiences while in the second Thompson investigates the use of goal-setting strategies on math fluency for elementary students. We conclude this year’s review with a practitioner inquiry paper by Sadrnafisi who develops a supportive teacher community to address the causes of teacher turnover

Eisenstein at the Movies, Spring 1945
The pioneering Soviet filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein kept a day planner in March-June 1945 listing titles of recent Hollywood films that at least partially correspond with screenings that he attended. Some of these titles re-appear in theoretical and personal writings from the final years of his life, 1946-48. This paper examines the historical circumstances of wartime American film screenings in Moscow and investigates a key subset of the films from Eisenstein’s planner for insight into the mature director’s ever-developing thoughts on contemporary cinema and American popular culture
