Sa berbal-biswal na panunuri ng banghay at mga tauhan gamit ang kalitatibong pamamaraan, at ng mga elementong leksikal, kadalasan ng paglitaw, at kolokasyon ng mga ito gamit ang kantitatibong pamamaraan (sa lilim ng tinaguriang “Digital Humanities”), maipapakita ang taglay na mga pampolitika, pangkalinangan, at ideyolohikal na kaisipan sa isang kolonyal na akdang pambata.Author Frances Williston Burks and illustrators Hermann Heyer, Earl Horter, and G. W. Peters’ Barbara’s Philippine Journey (1913) narrates the journeys of Barbara, a child from New York, along with her parents and friends around various places in the Philippine Islands during US colonial rule. One can infer the importance of Benguet as setting, which features heavily in eight out of 22 chapters. Using a combination of the qualitative methods of verbal-visual analysis of the plot and characters, and quantitative methods such as lexical elements, frequency of use, and collocation (under the “Digital Humanities”), the political, cultural and ideological ideas contained in colonial children’s text can be brought into the fore and analyzed
Teaching Philosophy in Manila
Get PDFIn this talk, Fr. Roque J. Ferriols, S.J. shares some reflections from his experiences in teaching philosophy for almost fifty years in what he describes as a “small corner of Manila”. Teaching philosophy, for him, involves creating an atmosphere, an environment which allows students to see things they could not see before--things that the teacher may not even have seen before. That is why a teacher must have the courage to learn from the students and the patience to cultivate a kind of silence enabling them to move from the world of pure ideas to the world of what is really happening. In this world of the real, what is most important cannot be said but lived. Viewing philosophy as a search for the truth, Fr. Ferriols stresses that a person looking for the truth must admit there is a true answer. This answer might be difficult and may take long to find but there is a true answer. In looking for the truth, it is best to use the language of the place where you are philosophizing. For Fr. Ferriols, this would be the language of “the people outside cleaning the streets, driving the jeepneys, driving the buses, going to their work”.(A Plenary Lecture presented during the International Conference on “Teaching Philosophy in Asian Contexts” sponsored by Missio Aachen, Germany on February 19, 2005 held at Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines. Snapshots of a Literary Friendship: Francisco Arcellana and Jose Garcia Villa*
Get PDFAccounts of literary friendships provide one with material for literary scholarship. This paper presents “snapshots” of the friendship of Francisco Arcellana (1917–2002) and Jose Garcia Villa (1908– 97). Arcellana and Villa’s friendship bears indelible traces of Philippine literary history at large; to look at the microcosm that is their friendship is also to get a glimpse of a macrocosm of relations, forces, and movements that have constituted Philippine literature. *An earlier version of this paper was read at a panel organized by the Department of English Studies and Comparative Literature, College of Arts and Letters, University of the Philippines, on 9 September 2016, on the centenary of Francisco Arcellana. Where Is 'East of Eden’? The Politics of Steinbeck’s Literary Reputation in Slovenia
Get PDFKatherine Arens maintains that literary texts or authors can function as prototypes for their speech genres within literary history and in a cultural community. Until very recently, in Slovenia, John Steinbeck has been regarded primarily as an objective social chronicler of the Great Depression. This popular critical view, earned with his “labor trilogy,” The Grapes of Wrath, In Dubious Battle, and Of Mice and Men, is needlessly limiting, given that Steinbeck’s literary achivements extend well beyond the modes and methods of traditional realism or documentary representation. Written against the background of the critical discourse regarding the political implications of literary works and the ways in which readers are involved in creating the texts they read, this essay analyzes the indicators of and the plausible reasons for the unprecedented popularity of Steinbeck’s novel East of Eden. It shows that in past decades, when Slovenia was in the grip of communist rule, even this book, concerned with moral dilemmas and personal traumas, rather than dealing with the workers’ struggle for social change, could not escape a political reading and served to promote an ideology it does not formally articulate
