Indigenous Liberation Theology and Spirituality: Looking to the Past for Answers in the Present
Get PDFPope Francis’s Laudato si’: On the Care of Our Common Home offers a framework for dealing with poverty, ecological degradation, and climate change in the Philippines. His interconnected and holistic ecological spirituality shares some commonalities with indigenous spirituality where the earth is a gift from God to be taken care of—not taken advantage of or taken for granted. In this paper, we explore how this integrated approach of indigenous spirituality and liberation theology offers some long-term solutions to the problems of poverty and climate change. Taking the position of being politically engaged in the world accords well with indigenous spirituality, this political engagement is thereby defined by loving and taking care of all of God’s creation. Diametrically opposing this political engagement to political opportunism—attempts to maintain power and influence without regard for ethical or political principles—views human and non-human sentient animals and all living life forms as interconnected and sacred. A brief explanation of climate change in the Philippine context suggests the idea of rekindling a love for “earth houses”—a term earlier coined by the Egyptian architect, Hassan Fathy (1900–1989). No full text随着新媒体技术的普及和自媒体的出现，中国越来越多公益组织利用自媒介的交互性、即时性、聚合性的特点进行议题传播。利用新媒体技术特征进行裂变式传播的自媒体，既弥补了传统媒体表现形式的局限，也使公益组织的传播效果最大化。本文以中国民间女性组织“妇女传媒监测网络”（简称“女声”）反对家庭暴力传播实践为个案。把这些案例中的自媒体传播分成社会自媒体和组织自媒体；再把线上自媒体与线下抗争行动结合起来进行分析。在赋权理论、媒介与赋权以及性别与媒介的理论体系基础上，学者采用文献研究、文本分析和半结构式访谈结合的方法，分析该组织的自媒体传播策略及自媒体赋权路径。 作者认为自媒体平台的议题传播有利于实现公益组织的意见表达、互动和行动，推动议题公共化和弱势群体的赋权；“女声”在反家暴议题自媒体赋权中运用了如下传播策略和路径：设置公众议程，灵活运用多重媒体符号进行信息交换，以请愿式、艺术化等多元方式表达诉求，以专业力量推动女权行动和法治进程。EDITORIAL NOTE: Translated in English as “Fostering GenderEquality on China: Empowerment Strategies Used by the Voiceof Women.” Social Transformations publishes bilingual versions ofselected submissions with an aim of engaging with the thinkingin, on, and from the Global South by way of the languages of itsconstituencies

Get PDFThe tension between disciplines and interdisciplinary initiatives has been present in different areas around the world. This paper discusses the roots of the tension in the world and in the Philippines, as well as issues and challenges of implementation. It begins with the meaning of discipline and the nuances in the interaction of multiple disciplines, (e.g. multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, or transdisciplinary) and traces and traces the development of disciplines in relation to the development of higher education. While academic departments and programs give life and power to the disciplines, there were pressures to work across disciplines to achieve the underlying goals of scholarship. Multiple disciplines are needed in solving real-world problems, understanding complex systems, implementing policy or applying research, and generating groundbreaking ideas. However, there are challenges in implementing interdisciplinarity in the Philippines and this includes issues tied up with the implementation process; the need for leadership to navigate through the complex relationships of the disciplines; the balance of grounding in the discipline and interdisciplinarity; assessment of outcomes of interdisciplinary work; and defining an institution’s desired outcomes to guide the support systems
Rethinking Filipino Masculinities: The Case of the Cosmopolitan Tambay
Get PDFIn the Philippines, tambay refers to men who are notorious for hanging out in the streets for long hours owing to lack of formal work. Traditionally, representations of the tambay have revolved around drinking and the ironic display of patriarchal power despite the lack of clear contributions to the household economy. The study looks at the implications of transnational and economic shifts in rethinking the behaviors and attitudes of the tambay in Metropolitan Manila. The rising number of malls in the metropolis and the significant increase in dollar remittances from overseas have allowed for a shift in material and cultural practice, creating the need to simultaneously redefine and historicize this strand of Filipino masculinity. Aside from the new spaces they occupy, gender roles will be analyzed in relation to their relationships to the various women in their lives, and their socio-economic position will be reexamined anew bearing in mind the symbols of power and economic mobility available to them

Government Supervision of M&A Decisions by State-owned Enterprises in China
Get PDFIn China, as a socialist market economy, the state performs an important role in the economy not only as a regulator but also as an active market player through the creation and maintenance of state-owned enterprises (SOEs). In the past, means of production were in the hands of the state. But since the introduction of market reforms and the opening up of the economy to private capital and foreign investment, non-state participation in the economy continue to grow and SOEs were made to compete with one another, as well as with private businesses. In the course of these reforms, some SOEs were sold, went bankrupt, or were consolidated to enhanceefficiency and competitiveness contributing to the development of the “survival of the fittest” mechanism among SOEs (Li, 2003). This is a check against complacency and poor performance and, at the same time, provides incentive to innovative, competitive and performing SOEs. Consolidation of SOEs through mergers and acquisitions (M&As) is seen as one avenue by which the state economy is being reformed. Hence, the state, through such government authorities as the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC), ensures supervision and management of SOE activities, including in their M&A activities at home and abroad
