Politics as a Vocation: Aung San Suu Kyi, Politician or Activist?

    No full text
Myanmar’s opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi was seen by the world as a heroic activist and a Nobel Peace Laureate for nonviolent struggle. Since she became a stateswoman, the world’s opinion seemingly changed. In the context of the 2017 Rohingya crisis, she was even labeled an “ignoble laureate” by the New Yorker due to what the West perceived as her silence on the flight of more than 700,000 refugees from Western Myanmar to Bangladesh. This led Western opinion leaders to question her moral conviction and her iconic status as a human rights activist. Through Max Weber’s definion of a politican in his “Politics as a Vocation,” this paper examines whether Aung San Suu Kyi is a politician or an activist

Born of Two Koreas, of Human Blood: Monstrosity and the Discourse of Humanity and Pacifism in the Film Bulgasari

    Get PDF
As in the Western world, Korea has a variety of mythical monsters. Among them is Bulgasari, an iron-eating monster, which will be the main topic of this paper. The monster’s name “Bulgasari” has a paradoxical meaning in Korean, which is “cannot be killed but can be killed by fire.” The meaning of the name represents the wide gamut of ambivalent identity ranging from physical to metaphorical aspects of the monster. It also provides a uniquely Korean reception and interpretation of being monstrous as distinctive from the archetypal imagery and general understanding of monstrosity as “enduring evil,” as seen in most myths and tradition. For instance, Bulgasari’s destructive power is frequently portrayed in the myth as a heroic trait to protect social justice by condemning and punishing the evils of society. Such an ambivalent identity as both monster and hero shows that Bulgasari’s embodiment of monstrosity is recognized through a different or rather complex mechanism in Korean-specific context, not uniformly recognized as enduring evil. This study traces historical descriptions of the monster Bulgasari in legend, literature, and film adaptation. Especially focusing on the North Korean film Bulgasari (1985), this study explores the way in which the ambivalent identity of the monster develops into discourses of humanity and pacifism, in both Korean-specific and transnational contexts, while mirroring the Korean and global sense of reality situated in this era of South-North division and nuclear holocaust

Accented Spatial Representations in the Internal Exilic Eelam-Tamil Film Viduthalai Moochu

    Get PDF
Studies have shown that accented filmmaking features and strategies are indeed appearing in wide-ranging films of contemporary cinemas. The main focus of this paper is to analyze Viduthalai Moochu, an internal exilic Eelam-Tamil film from Sri Lanka, using a concept derived from Hamid Naficy’s theorization of An Accented Cinema known as the “preoccupation with the place.” The concept is cinematically expressed through the open, closed, and third spacetime cinematic formations. It needs to be noted here that Naficy’s theory offers a range of accented cinematic features that express accent in the film. However, the paper will only focus on the film’s spatial representations that are configured according to the space-time formations. Space-time formations are cinematic features that are employed to produce and reproduce the “accent” through cinematic representations of spaces and places rendered in the film. The configurations of the space-time formations will be used as the basis to examine Viduthalai Moochu, a film that does not seem to demonstrate the familiar conventions of filmmaking. The film mainly grapples with themes that enunciate the Eelam-Tamil displacement and deterritorialization in the internal exilic situation. The analysis shows how a particular version of alternative filmmaking strategy exclusively uses spatial representations to render themes of displacement and deterritorialization. The findings prove that the makers of Viduthalai Moochu have indeed employed the space-time formations to highlight the displacement and the deterritorialization of the Eelam-Tamil community through cinematic spatial representations

Ilang Eksplorasyon sa Pag-Aaral ng Kulturang Popular sa Filipinas

Pacing Caroline Hau (2002), this essay explores the historical and intellectual specificities of Cultural Studies and the study of Popular Culture in the Philippines, and situates them in the author’s recent study of the cultural history of the teleserye, the Filipino TV soap opera. While the essay assumes that much of the key ideas and paradigms of Western Cultural Studies have been adopted in the country, the ethos of the local field may also be traced back to the works of patriots José Rizal and Isabelo delos Reyes. The projects of the two have been continued by intellectuals and scholars who emerged during the 1960s to the 1970s and formulated more postcolonial approaches to the study of Philippine culture. Moreover, the essay comments on the importance and role of interdisciplinarity in the emergence of Cultural Studies and the study of Popular Culture in the Philippines
