    Can the Impact of Think Tanks on Public Policy Be Measured? Bir kamu politikası aktörü olarak düşünce kuruluşlarının kamu politikaları üzerinde gerçekten etkili olup olmadıkları ya da ne ölçüde etkili oldukları hâlâ tartışma konusudur. Bu belirsizlikte, karmaşık kamu politikası süreçlerinde etkilerin belirli bir aktöre atfedilmesinin güçlüğü kadar, “etki” kavramının tanımlanması ve ölçülmesinin zorluğu da önemli rol oynamaktadır. Bu makalenin amacı, düşünce kuruluşlarının kamu politikalarındaki etkilerini tartışmak ve bu etkinin nasıl ölçülebileceğine dair analitik bir çerçeve sunmaktır. Bu doğrultuda, alandaki temel çalışmalar ve yaklaşımlar karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenmiş, benzerlik ve farklılıklar üzerinden bir senteze ulaşılmaya çalışılmıştır. Araştırmalar, maddi destekle varlığını sürdüren düşünce kuruluşlarının, etkili oldukları algısını güçlendirmek için medya görünürlüğüne ve etki iddialarına ağırlık verdiklerini göstermektedir. Bu durum, “görünürlük = etki” algısını beslemekte ve zaman zaman abartılı etkili olma söylemleriyle desteklenmektedir. Ancak sonuçlar, düşünce kuruluşlarının ne kendi ilan ettikleri kadar etkili, ne de bazı eleştirmenlerin varsaydığı kadar etkisiz olduğunu göstermektedir. Gelecekteki araştırmaların, düşünce kuruluşlarının yalnızca ne kadar etkili olduklarını ölçmeye odaklanmak yerine, politika tartışmalarına olan katkılarını ve bu katkıların niteliğini analiz etmeye yönelmesi gerektiği önerilmektedir

    Nutritional risk at hospital admission and its long-term impact on COVID-19 survivors in Ha`il region, Saudi Arabia.

    Abstract Background and aim: This study aims to investigate the relationship between nutritional risk at hospital admission and its effect on severe outcomes and length of hospital stay in hospitalized COVID-19 patients, both with and without comorbidities. Methods: This prospective cohort study included 103 COVID-19 patients hospitalized at King Salman Specialist Hospital in the Ha'il region of Saudi Arabia. Of 600 eligible patients contacted, 103 consented to participate, representing one of the first comprehensive investigations of nutritional risk in COVID-19 survivors in this region. Retrospective data were obtained from patient records at admission, covering sociodemographic details, clinical characteristics, symptoms, anthropometric measurements, nutrition-related laboratory results, and length of hospital stay. The Malnutrition Screening Tool was used to evaluate malnutrition risk at admission and follow-up, while body mass index was calculated using height and weight measurements taken at these time points. Results: Body mass index was not uniformly observed across all categories. Significant increase in Calcium (p-value 0.0001) was noted between admission and follow-up visits in COVID-19 patients. Ferritin levels were significantly decreased and associated with admission and follow-up only in patients without comorbidities (p-value 0.002). Although albumin levels differed significantly across all participants (p-value 0.0001), total protein levels did not show significant variation in comorbidities group. Additionally, moderate disease severity was strongly associated with longer hospital stays (p-value 0.0001). Conclusion: Several factors, including abnormal biomarkers and moderate case severity, were identified as potential influences on nutritional risk at hospital admission and its long-term effects on COVID-19 survivors

    Effects of transtheoretical model of change-based interventions on physical activity among older adults: a systematic review of randomised controlled and non-randomised controlled trials.

    Physical inactivity in older adults is a major public health concern associated with numerous non-communicable chronic conditions. Several behaviour theories have been advanced to address the issue of physical inactivity including Transtheoretical Model (TTM) of Change among older adults. The study aimed to primarily assess the cumulative effect of TTM-based interventions on physical activity and secondarily on self-efficacy among older adults. A systematic search of electronic databases (including Cochrane Library, AgeLine, Medline, Scopus, PsycINFO, and Web of Science Core Collections) was searched from inception to August 2024. Inclusion criteria comprised studies investigating TTM-based interventions on PA in individuals aged 60 and above, randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and non-RCTs. Risk of bias was assessed using Cochrane Collaboration's tool for RCTs while ROBIN-I was used for non-RCTs. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation was used to evaluate the certainty of the evidence. Study findings were narratively synthesised in line with the Synthesis Without Meta-analysis framework. Three studies (two RCTs and one non-RCT) met the inclusion criteria, comprising 1,474 participants (65-89 years; 71% females). TTM interventions showed low certainty of evidence of no significant effects on physical activity or self-efficacy for the RCTs. In contrast, the non-RCT showed very low-certainty evidence for the significant effects of TTM on physical activity among participants in the under-maintenance and maintenance stages, with long-term benefits limited only to those already in the maintenance stage. For self-efficacy, there was very low certainty of evidence for the significant effects of TTM only among participants in the under-maintenance stage. This review highlights the limited, inconsistent and low level of evidence of the effects of TTM-based interventions in promoting physical activity among older adults. Whilst for self-efficacy, there is limited, mixed and low to very low level of evidence for the beneficial effects of TTM interventions. More RCTs are needed to identify the most effective components of the TTM and understand the impact of different intervention delivery methods (e.g., digital versus face-to-face) for physical activity promotion in the older adult population.     EAL and L1 English-speaking postgraduate students’ conceptions of English academic writing: a comparative metaphor analysis

    Despite intensive research on English academic writing, few studies compare how English-as-a-first-language (L1) and English-as-an-additional-language (EAL) writers conceptualise the task rather than simply perform it. Addressing this gap, this study surveyed 458 UK postgraduate students (258 EAL, 200 L1) from eight research-led universities using a Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) prompt (“Academic writing is like…because…”) and followed up with 45 metaphor-checking interviews. Inductive coding of metaphor entries generated four overarching themes. Two revealed clear language-group contrasts: EAL writers framed difficulty as external precision or gatekeeping, whereas L1 peers emphasised internal struggle and self-expression. The other two themes – an affective arc from struggle to catharsis and a constructive blueprint of building, crafting, and journeying – were strikingly similar across groups. These patterns extend CMT by showing how positionality in Anglophone knowledge networks shapes source-domain choice, yet also corroborate academic-literacies claims that cognitive, rhetorical, and emotional demands transcend native-speaker status. The study thus offers an integrated lens for theorising academic-writing cognition and lays a conceptual foundation for more equitable support strategies

    The role of nutrition in wound healing and implications for nursing practice

    Nutrition plays a vital role in wound healing, influencing both the speed and quality of recovery. The wound healing process encompasses haemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodelling, each reliant on specific nutrients. This article summarises the current literature on the role of nutrition in wound healing, focusing on key nutrients: proteins, vitamins (A, C, E, K), and minerals (zinc, iron, copper, manganese), essential for collagen synthesis, immune function, and cellular activity. Nurses are pivotal in assessing nutritional status, implementing dietary interventions, and educating patients and caregivers about the importance of nutrition in wound care. Practical strategies include personalised dietary plans, appropriate use of nutritional supplements, and regular monitoring of nutritional intake and wound healing progress. Although the benefits of nutrition in wound healing are well established, challenges persist, particularly in the limited evidence beyond pressure injuries and the constrained efficacy of supplementation without deficiencies. A multidisciplinary approach is critical to optimise nutritional support and improve patient outcomes in wound healing
