Nation and Identity: Far Right-Wing Parties\u27 Depiction of National Identity and Anti-immigrant Rhetoric

    Get PDF
This thesis analyzes national identity maintenance by looking at the communications of three far right political parties in Europe. These parties are Alternativ Für Deutschland, the National Rally party, and the United Kingdom Independence Party. The results of this thesis have highlighted that these parties are concerned about maintaining the national identity of their countries and the worry that immigration coming into the nation will change the national identity. AfD, the National Rally party and UKIP all have different approaches to national identity; AfD is focused upon the family rhetoric and maintaining the family rhetoric to protect the national identity. The National Rally party is concerned that immigration will bring Islam into France and therefore post a danger to French society. UKIP is concerned about the overwhelming number of immigrants entering the United Kingdom. It is evident within the results, that Afd, the National Rally party, and UKIP are worried about maintaining the national identity and adopting anti-immigrant rhetoric within their communications. It is important to understand how these parties can influence their supporters because of the rise of far-right extremism across Europe. To understand far right extremism, it is vital to recognize the methods of crafting the national identity maintenance rhetoric of far-right parties

    Connection: Korean Traditional Door Series

    No full text
In Jana Sim\u27s Korean Traditional Door series, the artwork takes the form of a doorframe with a knocker that opens to reveal a ground-level city view, immersing the viewer in the scene. The book itself becomes the art, created as an elongated object bound using traditional Korean 5-hole binding techniques and composed of newspaper pages. These newspaper pages are intricately cut, allowing viewers to see through the open areas of each leaf, creating a layered and transparent visual experience.https://scholarship.rollins.edu/book_arts/1162/thumbnail.jp

This piece continues the theme of my trans identity. In this one I wanted to look at how I felt over the process of transitioning. The most important part of this piece is the writing, especially with the process of letterpress. The process of having to select every sort, and then after having to put all of them away, related so much to the patience that you need when transitioning. Even if you have enough money to pay for the hormones or surgery, you still are limited by time. That’s why the writing in this piece focuses on waiting and on the impact that that has on a person that has to wait to feel comfortable. — Saxon Andersonhttps://scholarship.rollins.edu/book_arts/1123/thumbnail.jp

The Impact of Degree of Virtualness on Performance Appraisal Scores and Organizational Justice in the U.S. Navy Reserves

With advances in information and communication technology, many organizations no longer require employees to work in the same location as their leader. This results in employees having different amounts of face-to-face and electronic-mediated communication, or different degrees of virtualness, with the leader. While virtualness can provide benefits to organizations, virtual workers’ contributions may not be properly recognized. This dissertation investigated the relationship between the degree of virtualness and both performance-appraisal scores and subordinates’ perceptions of the fairness of the performance appraisals in the Navy Reserve. The study also examined the mediating effects of Leader-Member Exchange (LMX), a measure of relationship quality between the leader and subordinate. Finally, the study investigated leader inclusiveness as a moderator between the degree of virtualness and LMX, performance appraisal scores, and perceptions of organizational justice, suggesting that leaders who foster inclusiveness may mitigate the potentially harmful effects of virtualness. Results show that the degree of virtualness is, in fact, negatively related to performance appraisal scores and organizational justice through the mediation of LMX. Control variables showed that women were rated lower than men and supervisors were more likely to communicate performance evaluations in person when scores were higher. Interestingly, tenure with supervisors had a negative effect but tenure in the unit had a positive effect. This study contributes to the literature degree of virtualness, performance appraisals, organizational justice, and leader inclusiveness. Managerial implications and future research opportunities are also discussed. Findings suggest the Navy Reserve should consider evaluating virtual workers as a separate category
