Speak English in the department or perish? A multimethod study on online public responses to an English-only incident at a U.S. university
No full textThis study investigated more than 3600 online comments responding to an incident in 2019 where a controversial memo was sent to instruct Chinese graduate students at a US university not to speak Chinese in the department. A text analysis based on Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count software showed that these comments included more negative-emotion words compared with positive-emotion words. In addition, an inductive thematic analysis identified themes supporting monolingual language ideology and other themes supporting language freedom in the United States and questioning the context of this English-only incident. 本研究调查了3600多条针对2019年美国某大学一封建议中国研究生在系里不要说中文的争议性邮件事件的网上评论。通过使用Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count软件，文本分析显示评论中的消极情绪词汇多于积极情绪词汇。另外，归纳式主题分析发现了支持单语意识形态的主题，以及另外支持美国的语言自由和质疑“只能说英语”事件的情境背景的主题
Mere Appearance or More? A Crux at Phaedo 74b–c Revisited
No full textThe non-identity argument at Phaedo 74b–c is among the most studied and disputed arguments in Plato’s dialogues. In the passage, equality is distinguished from perceptible equals insofar as the latter sometimes appear (phainetai) unequal. A long-standing crux is whether the distinction concerns perceptible equals’ merely appearing unequal or actually being so. A fresh approach to the construal of the verb phainomai is taken here and shown to favor the latter view, thereby securing a stronger argument for non-identity
Partial in-vitro dispersal of S. mutans UA159 biofilms by silver-(I)cyanoximate compounds
Get PDFSilver(I) cyanoximate compounds have antibacterial activity against the oral pathogen Streptococcus mutans, a resident of oral plaque biofilm. As oral biofilm strategies focus on the inhibition of attachment or physical removal of the existing microbes, we were interested in exploring the ability of six different silver(I) cyanoximate compounds to target and disperse a pre-existing biofilm. Here we report that these compounds were only able to partially disperse S. mutans biofilms as the compounds were more effective at inhibiting biofilm formation. None of the six compounds were able to outperform silver nitrate, a commonly used antibacterial in dentistry
Sightless Success: A Portrait of a Visually Impaired Music Entrepreneur
No full textThis qualitative study explores the experiences of visually impaired music entrepreneurs in navigating the post-COVID multimodal creative economy. Through in-depth interviews with Matthew Weihmuller, a prominent visually impaired saxophonist and educator, the study uncovers the unique challenges, advantages, strategies, and resources utilized by visually impaired entrepreneurs in sustaining their music businesses. Findings reveal the pivotal role of accessibility technology, innovative adaptation strategies, and collaborative networks in overcoming barriers and achieving sustainability in the music industry. Implications for educators, colleagues, and the broader music community underscore the importance of fostering inclusivity, representation, and collaboration to support the success of visually impaired entrepreneurs in the music entrepreneurship landscape
