    Teaching approaches to race through music: A timely example from the American South

    This chapter describes an attempt by the author to offer support to students of color in view of a forthcoming white supremacist rally, using controversy surrounding Lamar Kendrick’s earning of the Pulitzer Prize as a course-appropriate tool for broaching the subject of racial inequality. As the author had no experience or training in teaching questions of race prior to the exercise, she had concerns about the reception of the discussion. Having since learned more about appropriate ways to approach challenging topics in the classroom, she hopes that her experience will encourage others to place the care of students’ needs ahead of their own comfort

    Ascophyllum nodosum SWE enhances root anatomy, but not POD activity in both a salt-tolerant and salt-sensitive soybean (Glycine max) variety exposed to salt stress

    There is growing evidence that seaweed extracts (SWE) may be a solution for mitigating the negative effects of salt stress on crop yield and quality, as they introduce bioactive ingredients able to regulate the expression of growth-inducing and stress-responsive genes. We demonstrate that SWE slightly ameliorated the negative physical growth effects of salt stress, especially in the root anatomy of the salt-sensitive (Clark) variety. The SWE did not stimulate or enhance peroxidase (POD) activity in either the salt-sensitive (Clark) or salt-tolerant variety (Manokin). However, a complete assessment of other antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, APX) involved in the ROS detoxification process is further required

    Teaching Statistics: A Technology-Enhanced Supportive Instruction (TSI) Model During the Covid-19 Pandemic and Beyond

    Many approaches exist in teaching statistics, however, learning statistics is frequently perceived by students as challenging. While evidence-based teaching approaches like case discussions and flipped-classroom models have been successfully incorporated into multiple disciplines, these methods can have inadequate success when students are affectively detached or sometimes paralyzed by the subject. The sudden need to switch to virtual teaching in Spring 2020 created unprecedented challenges that were overwhelming for instructors and students. This article explores the challenges of teaching a statistics course, and the importance of purposeful use of technology and supportive feedback to effectively engage students and promote learning. Furthermore, this article discusses the results of implementing a Technology-enhanced Supportive Instruction (TSI) model (used since Fall 2019) in teaching a business statistics course. The TSI model uses Microsoft Excel in conjunction with intentional interactions between the student and teacher to help students stay engaged in face-to-face and remote learning. The analysis of Fall 2020 course evaluations, when the course was taught in a dual mode, shows positive students’ perception of instruction and engagement, and indicates that Fall 2020 ratings during dual-mode instruction were not different from Fall 2019 ratings during face-to-face instruction, which supports the potential utility of the model.     Interactive cue matters: The moderation role of situational factors in the effects of user comments on news sharing

    Communicators often find it challenging to prioritize the public and manage their comments during risk communication. This study explored the effects of comments as interactivity cues on news diffusion while considering situational factors under the framework of the Situational Theory of Problem Solving in the context of the US-China trade conflict. For this purpose, the researchers conducted an experiment to investigate the effects of interactivity cues and public segmentations on news sharing. The findings suggest that comments elicit different news-sharing behaviors among different segments of the public. The aware public shares more news than the activists/active public who are more likely to share when exposed to news posts with disabled comments than those with enabled comments. The results regarding the different segments of the public suggest the absence of the latent public in hot issues. Furthermore, the results suggest that message attributes have a limited effect on individuals’ information-processing behavior unless considering situational factors. The theoretical contributions and practical implications for communicators are further discussed

    Measuring the behavior of the acoustic standing wave exiting a flue organ pipe

    Correctly predicting the playing frequencies of a musical instrument is dependent on the length of the resonator with the addition of an end correction. There are multiple theories describing this end correction, perhaps the simplest being that the end correction of a pipe is a physical extension of the sinusoidal pressure standing wave inside the pipe. However, recent optical imaging of the flow in a flue organ pipe found an unexpected exponential decay of pressure just outside of the pipe. This work looks to validate those findings acoustically. A flue organ pipe was played at the 1st, 5th, and 7th harmonics and the pressure just inside and immediately outside the end of the pipe played was measured using a zero-degree PU Match Microflown sound intensity probe. These measurements were fit to both exponential and sinusoidal curves and compared to the optical images. While an exponential trend is in fact apparent in some cases, the goodness-of-fit appears to be dependent on which harmonic is sounding. Future work includes exploration of a potential transitional region, assessing the impact of altered pipe geometry (both cross-sectional shape and size), and investigating potential sensor interference by using other measurement equipment
