Extending the Pedagogical Attention Given Elasticity of Demand in Marketing
No full textHistorically elasticity of demand thinking has been primarily applied to the marketing mix variable of price. However, the concept can also lend meaningful insights into the administration of the other marketing mix and environmental variables in a context of causality. There exists a rich body of literature exploring the more extensive uses of elasticity of demand. However, basic marketing texts, and presumably introductory classes, typically do not feature the wider applications of the tool. This paper explores some of the pedagogical reasons for broadening the treatment of this tool
Reconsidering the Introduction to Interest Rate Theory
No full textThe various theories of interest rate determination presented in economics textbooks each spotlight a particular fundamental force behind the equilibrium rate. Unfortunately, each theory’s successful emphasis of one determinant of the interest rate comes at the cost of distorting some other aspect of its determination. This paper argues that the basic market analysis of debt securities (e.g., bonds and commercial paper) left out of most macroeconomic as well as money and banking textbooks provides a straightforward and practical perspective on interest rate determination that can help students navigate the established interest rate theories
Using Lateral Flow Assay to Assess the Prevalence of Trachemys Hybridization
No full textThe current study focuses on Trachemys species, which is a group of freshwater turtles found throughout the Greater Antilles. The role of studying an isolated island, such as the Dominican Republic, is significant because it serves as a way to better understand how the combined effects of species migration, mass tourism, and climate change can greatly impact isolated species. Of particular significance is how these forces interact in complex ways to reshape habitats and threaten biodiversity. Additionally, the introduction of a highly invasive species, Trachemys scripta elegans (T. scripta), in this environment pressures native species by acting as a source of competition for food and resources. Further, hybridization between the native and invasive species can disrupt ecological stability by producing offspring that are less well-suited for their environment as a result of losing unique traits necessary for survival. Our research involved the extraction and purification of Trachemys DNA using blood samples taken from two different sites in the Dominican Republic. DNA was fluorescently labelled using Polymerase Chain Reactions (PCR) and gel electrophoresis validated our results. We formed a protein complex consisting of deactivated Cas-9 (d-Cas-9), which is necessary for detection of a specific DNA sequence on a lateral flow assay. We demonstrate the laboratory process that acts as a precursor to solidifying an efficient, effective, and low-cost method to testing hybrid species in the wild
A Project for the Introductory Financial Management Course Designed to Involve Students with Online Financial Information and Analytical Tools
No full textFinance-related websites have proliferated, and students have become more Internet-savvy with increasing usage of the World Wide Web. Furthermore, finance professionals regularly use such finance-related websites (Association for Financial Professionals 2002). Given these facts, in this paper we demonstrate efficient and effective ways to use a semester-long, yet manageable, Internet-based research project designed to involve students with online financial information, data, and analytical tools, while reinforcing topics encountered in the typical introductory financial management course. We also suggest how to use pedagogically-sound practices to systematically alter the complexity of the project, and use a scoring guide to simplify grading
