    Complete Bipartite Graph Embeddings on Orientable Surfaces Using Cayley Maps

    We explored how effective Cayley Maps are at embedding complete bipartite graphs onto orientable surfaces, such as spheres and tori. We embedded the graphs onto surfaces using Cayley Maps with the intent of finding rotations that result in the graphs’ optimal genera. Because there are only three groups that can be used to describe Kp,p, where p is prime, we chose to focus on this specific graph type. This paper explains how we determined the genera when using a Cayley Map, provides general theorems for surface face sizes and the Dihedral Group, and discusses our results for Kp,p up to p=11

    The Physical Interactions of KLP-4 & The Effects of Microtubule Acetylation

    Our nervous system propagates signals by releasing neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft between two adjacent neurons. The transport and delivery of such neurotransmitters within the neuron is reliant on microtubule structure and motor proteins present. The direction of motor protein transport is dictated by the inherent polarity of microtubules. Kinesin-3 motor proteins, such as KLP-4 found in Caenorhabditis elegans, use this polarity to travel in an anterograde direction towards neurotransmitter exocytosis sites. Thus, KLP-4 is associated with the maintenance of neuron functionality. The klp-4 (ok3537) allele results in a large, in frame deletion within the cargo-binding domain of the motor protein, causing unknown molecular consequences. C. elegans containing this allele experience difficulty moving in reverse and disorganized synapses. Cargo that binds to the KLP-4 cargo-binding region is unknown. By tagging both wild type and mutant KLP-4 with a Myc tag, we planned to isolate and identify the proteins bound to the cargo binding domain. Additionally, in the presence of mutant KLP-4, the microtubules it travels on experience an increase in acetylation. Microtubule acetylation stabilizes microtubules and helps motor proteins travel efficiently. We suspect the combination of both functional alpha tubulin acetyltransferases, such as MEC-17 and ATAT-2, and mutant KLP-4, which signals for excess microtubule acetylation, results in the disorganized synapses associated with klp-4 (ok3537). We hypothesize that producing an organism homozygous for both the klp-4 (ok3537) allele and a knockout acetyltransferase allele, either mec-17 (ok2109) or atat-2 (ok2415), we would rescue of the mutant KLP-4 phenotype

    How Grassroots Can Save a Community: Citizen Activism in Environmental Justice Remediation

    Environmental justice, according to sociologist Robert Bullard, the father of the movement, “embraces the principle that all people and communities have a right to equal protection and equal enforcement of environment laws and regulations.” He says, “it’s a concept that is rooted in equal protection and equal enforcement.” Typically, minority, low-income, and politically powerless communities are not actually afforded this equal protection and enforcement. As a result, they often must organize together to demand reparations for the pollution of their neighborhood. Plastered over mainstream media, Flint was not the country’s first environmental justice event, and it will not be the last. For many years, minority groups were disenfranchised by being forced to live in close proximity to polluting industries. The goal of this paper is to highlight the strong impact of grassroots organizing in fighting against environmental justice issues. The work done by Margaret Williams in Pensacola, Florida, resulted in the relocation of over 300 families being poisoned by dioxin. Majora Carter’s crusade to “Green the Ghetto” gained more green spaces and job opportunities for the residents of the South Bronx, New York. The community partnerships between the Alternatives for Community and Environment and Dudley Grows cleaned up vacant lots for productive use and brought fresh fruits and vegetables into Roxbury, Massachusetts. The best way these communities have received attention and reparations is through grassroots organizing. The realization that many communities were contaminated with toxic chemicals erupted with the dioxin poisoning in the community of Love Canal, New York, from 1950-1980. As a result, the federal government moved the residents and the United States Congress passed the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) in 1980. This act allows the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to designate severely polluted areas as “Superfund sites” which provides federal financing to clean-up and, if necessary, relocate communities. These Superfund sites are some of the most contaminated sites in the United States. The act also allows the EPA to determine and hold accountable responsible parties. Even with federal responses in place, the agencies that enforce these laws and responses may fail to act. Furthermore, many other proactive environmental laws don’t fully protect these communities; for example, the Clean Water Act did not save the citizens of Flint, MI from being lead poisoned. In those situations, throughout history, community activists and grassroots organizations have demanded the right to clean air, clean water, and clean neighborhoods

    Community Engagement in the Liberal Arts: How Service Hours and Reflections Influence Course Value

    Background: In response to critics’ charges that the liberal arts lack practical value, most colleges have incorporated service-learning in their curricula. Ideally, these service-learning activities not only benefit the community but also enhance the course’s (a) pedagogical effectiveness as well as the students’ (b) civic engagement and (c) professional development. Purpose:This investigation uses a survey to measure the extent to which service-learning in community engagement courses at a liberal arts college achieved these three outcomes. Methodology/Approach:Specifically, we parsed the influence of service hours and reflection activities on 740 students’ ratings of pedagogical effectiveness, civic engagement, and professional development. Findings/Conclusions: The results suggest students in community engagement courses that included at least 15 service hours and three different types of reflections reported significantly greater outcome achievement than those with fewer hours or reflections. Moreover, class discussions and individual conversations were rated the most effective types of reflection activities. Implications: Based on these findings, we provide some best practice suggestions for service hours and reflection activities in liberal arts community engagement course

    Public health responses to the COVID-19 pandemic have emphasized older adults’ vulnerability, but this obfuscates the social and political root causes of health inequity. To advance health equity during a novel communicable disease outbreak, public health practitioners must continue to be attentive to social and political circumstances that inform poor health. Such efforts are especially needed for populations who are exposed to numerous social and political factors that structure health inequity, such as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or otherwise-queer identifying (LGBTQ+) populations and im/migrant populations. The COVID-19 outbreak is therefore a critical time to emphasize root causes of health inequity
