A Study of the Relationship Between Menu Terminology and Political Identity

    Get PDF
Food consumption and the choices made in restaurants are not matters of simple utility. As research and industry practice has revealed, consumer choices may be influenced by any number of factors. Not least of these is the menu. While individual restaurants will research their menu strategies, such research is necessarily proprietary. This dissertation seeks to deepen the understanding of the influence of menu verbiage and add to the body of academic knowledge of the influence of the menu on consumers. Additionally, while academic research has assessed the influence of social identity on consumer\u27s purchase intention in many industries, this has only rarely been reviewed in the context of restaurants. This dissertation investigated whether political identity as an aspect of social identity influences purchase intention. Political identity as a moderator of menu quality and price fairness were found to be significant toward purchase intention under the overall model, as was price fairness for respondents asserting a liberal political identity. Menu quality was found to be significant in influencing purchase intention under all conditions and to have a large effect. Price fairness was also found to be significant in influencing purchase intention in the broader model and was specifically influential among the liberal group identity. These findings are important as they inform the operator as to two critical needs of the consumer (i.e., menu quality and price fairness), which must be met to influence consumer purchase behavior. They also suggest a path for additional research to be undertaken under real restaurant conditions. The scales used to assess purchase intention, price fairness, and menu quality demonstrated high reliability and may suggest their use in industry analysis versus current methods. This study provides an additional contribution to the literature on the relationship between menu quality and purchase intention as well as indicating where additional, robust research may be warranted on the influence of political identity in consumer choice

An Experimental Analysis of Voice Volume for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Inappropriate prosodic production is an often observed, but rarely treated, communication skill deficit for individuals with autism. Expanding on previous literature, we conducted a functional analysis on the voice volume responses (VVR) of two children with ASD utilizing similar procedures to those from Edgerton and Wine (2017). Further, we evaluated the efficacy of using visual feedback from an app and a function-based treatment to decrease inappropriate VVR and increase appropriate VVR. Results of the functional analysis indicated loud VVR was maintained by social negative reinforcement (escape from demands) for one participant and by both social negative and automatic reinforcement for another participant. Results of the intervention demonstrated a decrease in the use of loud VVRs, and an increase in the use of appropriate VVRs, for one participant. The implications of the results with respect to conducting functional analysis on VVR are discussed

Programas de estudios en el extranjero: maximizar las aptitudes interculturales

    Get PDF
With increasing globalization, study abroad programs are becoming more common and popular in the United States. Unfortunately, many of the programs are not being used to their full potential to help students gain intercultural skills. This paper will present academic research on the definition and key characteristics of diverse cultural skills, methods for measuring those skills, and how study abroad programs can maximize students\u27 learning potential. Throughout this paper, I also reflect on my own experiences of study abroad in Medellin, Colombia, and Oviedo, Spain, and draw conclusions about my own travels and discoveries about cultural identity. Learning to be culturally competent is a vital skill in this increasingly interconnected world, and I hope this essay can shed some light on the subject
