It Provides This Connection with the Natural World

These photographs serve as one component of a larger project visualizing the fight to save Split Oak Forest using documentary methods as intentionally familiar means of storytelling. Though already an area of protected wilderness conservation lands, Split Oak has been under recent threat from developers attempting to build the Central Florida Expressway through it. Though specific to the greater Orlando community, this issue sets a larger alarming precedent for the current destruction of public lands and environmental rights everywhere.
Overall, this project advocates on behalf of Split Oak’s biodiversity and recreational value to the local community. From speaking directly with members fighting for Split Oak on the ground to quiet walks through the forest alone, a diversity of perceptual vantage points is represented. Imagery of the forest ranges from picturesque beauty to haunting reality. The creeping hints of urban sprawl along the edge of the forest are reflective of civilization’s current path of unfettered development. Quotes from advocates involved in the fight to save Split Oak are embedded throughout the photographs to highlight our collective role in preserving this land and to acknowledge the impacts of grassroots activism in the ongoing fight for environmental rights.
Due to local efforts, the forest has been momentarily saved by the passing of a successful charter amendment in the 2020 election. Perhaps this hopeful precedent can set the stage to replace the forces that continue to threaten these spaces. Ultimately, Split Oak is part of a larger conversation around the current destruction of public lands and environmental degradation everywhere as progress and economic growth continue to develop uncontrollably. Comparing the Effects of Feedback Types on Caregiver Training of Hispanic Parents
The purpose of this study was to identify the preference of feedback types used during parent training with Hispanic caregivers. Knowing the caregiver’s preference of feedback formats allowed for the intervention plan to be designed based on caregiver choice and might enhance the likelihood that the treatment will be carried out as designed by the caregiver. A secondary purpose of the current study was to incorporate cultural values, specifically of Hispanic caregivers in the intervention process. By including cultural components in the intervention, practitioners may improve their cultural competency. Parent training protocols and behavioral skills training (BST) was conducted in either English or Spanish, depending on the caregiver preference. BST was used to teach the caregiver how to respond, reinforce, and prompt their child to communicate appropriately. The independent variable was the two feedback formats: corrective+supportive and supportive-only feedback, which was provided during the training. A preference evaluation survey on the intervention outcome was completed by the caregiver. The primary dependent variable was the caregiver’s preferred feedback format. The secondary dependent variable was the accuracy of the caregiver’s performance of the protocol steps following each of the two forms of feedback. Results indicated parent training can be culturally sensitive with Hispanic caregivers and that preferences of feedback types are idiosyncratic
Hurricane Irma induces divergent behavioral and hormonal impacts on an urban and forest population of invasive Anolis lizards: evidence for an urban resilience hypothesis
Hurricanes can have both profound short-term effects on animal populations and serve as long-term drivers of evolutionary change. Animals inhabiting varying habitats may differ in their response to hurricane impacts. Increasing evidence sug- gests that animals from urban areas exhibit different behavioral and physiological traits compared to rural counterparts, in- cluding attenuated hormonal stress responses and a lowered propensity for flight behavior. A unique opportunity was pre- sented when Hurricane Irma hit Florida on 10 September 2017 and interrupted a study of invasive brown anoles (Anolis sagrei) at an urban and a forest. Using data collected before and after Hurricane Irma, we documented that forest anoles exhibited a greater avoidance of people and more male territorial behavior for a longer period of time following the hurri- cane. Post-hurricane both populations increased corticosterone concentrations post-capture stress, but urban anoles recov- ered 2 weeks faster than forest conspecifics. A dexamethasone suppression experiment suggested that these population dif- ferences were the result of forest anoles having a less effective negative feedback regulating corticosterone secretion. In the brain, forest anoles had higher corticosterone concentrations within the amygdala and parts of the cortex associated with stress than urban lizards. One explanation may be Hurricane Irma brought flooding and debris that altered the landscape leading to behavioral instability, and urban lizards already exhibited ecological adjustments that permitted a more rapid re- covery (i.e. the ‘urban resilience’ hypothesis). Testing if urban animals are more resilient to natural disasters can inform conservationists interested in understanding their role in facilitating invasive species expansion and what their increasing presence may indicate for animal populations
