The Old, The Here and Now (Inside 1)

Andrea Czafit (b. 1998), Sanford FL Many citizens regularly enter municipal facilities in their communities without considering the foundational histories embedded within. To heighten awareness of these overlooked infrastructural politics, this work emphasizes the capitalist-catering tendencies rooted within biased and dismissive media coverage of minority residents and communities, leading to their disenfranchisement. Developed from a curated selection of archival records associated with my hometown of Sanford, Florida, the works that form this project highlight the detrimental impact of the city’s foundational policies on racial minorities and low-income residents. Photographs and newspaper articles offer evidence of how capitalist interests lead to discrimination that inhibits lower class livelihood through poor resource distribution and inequitable criminal justice. Visual alterations of overlaying and mark making disrupt these materials, pointing to the relationship between spatial histories and written records, making Sanford’s physical and ideological construction visible. Presenting these documents in the form of reworked compositions, varied timelines are condensed into a visual amalgamation, stressing the continued pattern of exploitation and damaging transitions that perpetuate racial-class prejudices. A constructed newspaper takeaway completes the series, provoking viewers to consider how the media we consume reinforces harmful assumptions, while encouraging their participation in the production of new histories.https://scholarship.rollins.edu/studioart_all/1016/thumbnail.jp

    The Enlightenment Conditions: A Comparison

    No full text
The Enlightenment only happened in some countries, and it did not occur in other countries. There were several conditions in the Enlightenment countries that enabled the Enlightenment to emerge in those countries. The Enlightenment conditions increased the likelihood that the Enlightenment would emerge in the countries. A comparative analysis of Scotland, France, and Germany will determine the Enlightenment conditions for each country, and then identify the commonly shared conditions in all three countries. Through this comparison there might be universal conditions that tend to enable the Enlightenment to emerge. This information is useful in looking back on past Enlightenments, and provides some reasons why the Enlightenment emerged in some countries but not in others. There is also the potential for future Enlightenments that might occur, and these Enlightenment conditions can be useful in analyzing whether a country has the right circumstances for an Enlightenment

    Memory Life Manual Index

Colophon: Life: A User\u27s Manual, by Georges Perec + drawings based on objects from the novel + lists of memories and former homes + lists of objects on kitchen tables + drawings based on lists + wood \u27type\u27 blocks of the generated text and images x a gridded press bed x improvisational composition x 2015 - 2021 / numerous interruptions. Wikipedia (1/10/2023): Life: A User\u27s Manual (the original title is ‘La Vie mode d\u27emploi’) is Georges Perec\u27s most famous novel, published in 1978 ... ‘ La Vie mode d\u27emploi’ is a tapestry of interwoven stories and ideas as well as literary and historical allusions, based on the lives of the inhabitants of a fictitious Parisian apartment block ... It was written according to a complex plan of writing constraints, and is primarily constructed from several elements, each adding a layer of complexity. ... The content of Perec\u27s novel was partly generated by 42 lists, each containing 10 elements (e.g. the ‘Fabrics’ list contains ten different fabrics). Perec used Graeco-Latin squares or ‘bi-squares’ to distribute these elements across the 99 chapters of the book. A bi-square is similar to a sudoku puzzle, though more complicated, as two lists of elements must be distributed across the grid. In Memory Life Manual Index, the creators use Perec\u27s approach as a basis for their lists of memories and life events. These lists are in the form of one inch square blocks with words or color or image printed, it seems, randomly across each page. The result is at once stimulating and puzzling, frustrating and revealing.https://scholarship.rollins.edu/book_arts/1127/thumbnail.jp

Regional Integration in South America: Mercosur as a Force for Democracy Protection

    Get PDF
Set against a backdrop of widespread democratization in Latin America, the foundation of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) in 1991 represents an effort to both harmonize interstate relations and enhance the region’s collective standing on the global stage. This work takes particular interest with the principles of democracy protection enshrined within the 1998 Ushuaia Protocol on Democratic Commitment. Stable democratic function is often viewed as an end unto itself and can also promote economic and macropolitical stability within a framework of strong regional interdependence. This work will provide a literature review which merges scholarly insights on the role of hegemonic interests, existing liberal norms, ideological movements, and more in democracy protection initiatives. It is found that Mercosur and other regional organizations may operate most decisively to enforce democracy clauses when doing so aligns with the strategic interests of the regional hegemon. In the absence of specific guidelines for enforcement, democracy protection is also heavily influenced by the emergence of transnational ideological movements, as is the case with South America’s ‘New Left.’ Stronger standards of basic constitutional function would lend more credibility to Mercosur’s democracy clause, and possible provide for more effective tutelage of democratic norms throughout the continent

Using the Green Climate Fund to build stronger infrastructures among SIDS: a comparative analysis of Tonga and Haiti

    Get PDF
The last two decades have drawn significant attention to the lack of infrastructure and adaptation plans accessible for the protection against climate-related hazards, especially those implemented in developing communities where low-income individuals are disproportionately affected. Small Island Developing States, also referred to as SIDS, are known for their limited resources, as well as their high susceptibility to environmental and economic shocks. Officially launched in 2010 by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Green Climate Fund is a US $100 billion dollar fund approved by 196 sovereign governments to help lower-income countries shift to low emission, climate-resilient systems. While this fund has helped pave the way for many other initiatives, the notable lack of projects focused on stronger infrastructures raises the urge to implement new techniques to help prevent big economic shocks. Both Tonga and Haiti are highly susceptible and vulnerable to natural disasters, yet there seems to be a big difference between the funds provided by the Green Climate Fund to these nations. Given the conditions and the desperate need to cover repair costs by these SIDS, this paper performs a comparative analysis between both countries and suggests promising solutions for a more efficient allocation of these funds
