    Giemsa staining revealed differences in cell cycle between normal diploid and cancer cells

    This study investigated the differences in cell division stages between normal and cancer human cells. Specifically, normal diploid retinal epithelial cells, hTERT-immortalized female retinal pigment epithelial cell line, hTERT RPE-1, were derived by transfecting the RPE-340 cell line with the pGRN145 hTERT-expressing plasmid (ATCC MBA-141) and served as control. Additionally, HeLa cells, female epithelial cells isolated from adenocarcinoma tumor (ATCC-CCL2), the first immortal human cells to be grown in culture, were analyzed as an example of cancer cells.     This study explores the research question: Can we effectively divide our attention across two tasks? With the rise of multitasking among college students, particularly during academic tasks, understanding the cognitive implications of divided attention is increasingly important. We hypothesize Dividing attention between two tasks will result in decreased performance compared to focusing on a single task.     Engaging the Whole Student: Connecting Wellness to Academic Success

    Adolescents today face rising challenges to their physical, mental, and digital well-being. These issues are strongly linked to reduced cognitive function, emotional regulation, and academic engagement, making student wellness not just a health priority, but an academic one. This capstone project explores the relationship between wellness behaviors and academic success through an extensive literature review focused on adolescent physical activity, mental health, and digital habits. The research highlights how low activity levels, poor mental health, and digital overstimulation are statistically associated with lower academic performance and decreased school engagement. In response, this project offers a set of practical, evidence-informed toolkits designed to support school and district wellness committees in implementing effective wellness policies. These toolkits include adaptable action plans, timelines, intervention strategies, and stakeholder considerations—tailored for elementary, middle, and high school environments. The toolkits focus on three key pillars: increasing opportunities for physical activity, supporting student mental health, and promoting healthy digital behaviors. By connecting wellness behaviors to measurable academic outcomes, this project guides educators and administrators to prioritize student well-being in ways that directly support learning and success.     Empowering Mattapan: A Community-Led Needs Assessment for Equitable Change

    This needs assessment aims to provide actionable insights to inform community programs, policy development, and targeted resource allocation in Mattapan. In collaboration with the Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition (MFFC), we developed a comprehensive Community Assessment Survey that captures residents’ priorities regarding physical activity, economic stability, mental health, and support for vulnerable populations. Our survey is designed with an emphasis on relevance, clarity, and inclusivity. It incorporates community input to ensure the questions reflect lived experiences and are accessible to all residents, including marginalized groups through translated versions and varied response formats. A pretest involving 25 pilot participants, with 8 detailed responses, was conducted to evaluate clarity, ease of completion, and question relevance. Our implementation strategy employs a multi-channel distribution approach, including in-person events, email, QR codes, paper surveys, SMS, and social media outreach, supported by strategic partnerships with local businesses and community organizations. Incentives, including a $25 raffle to encourage broad participation. This poster presents our structured, community-driven approach to engaging Mattapan residents and generating data that will drive meaningful and equitable interventions. The survey is still ongoing, and the results will be analyzed.     Applied Sports Science and Analytics: A Comprehensive Guide for Predicting NCAA-to-NFL Success in Football Players

    This project integrates advanced sports science data and analytics to evaluate key performance metrics of NCAA football players and their correlation with NFL success. Specifically, by utilizing athlete monitoring systems, force-plate data, GPS tracking, NFL Combine/Pro Day results, PFF data, injury history, and in-season performance, I aim to identify physiological and statistical trends predictive of elite performance.     Therapeutic Potential of Nitric Oxide Supplements for the Enhancement of Sleep Quality in Chronically Under Slept Active Individuals

    Sleep plays a critical role in physical and psychological well-being. However, numerous challenges face athletes and servicemembers that contribute to an observed trend of insufficient sleep duration (ISD) in these populations. ISD is connected to numerous physiological and performance decrements. A primary contributor to ISD is an increase in sleep onset latency (SOL) and research points to peripheral blood flow redistribution as a potent initiator of sleep onset. Vasodilation of the endothelium facilitates an increasing distal-proximal skin temperature gradient (DPG), aiding in sleep onset. The role of nitric oxide (NO) in vasodilation suggests the potential beneficial effect of NO precursor supplements, such as l-arginine (L-ARG) and l-citrulline (L-CIT), toward reducing SOL. These amino acids interaction in the urea cycle may also contribute to the buffering of hyperammonemia-induced fatigue in periods of extreme sleep deprivation (SD). This narrative review demonstrates the potential effect of NO supplementation as a novel nutritional intervention for sleep enhancement in chronically under slept active individuals.https://scholarworks.merrimack.edu/rcac_2025_posters/1156/thumbnail.jp
