This capstone project aims to connect the main theoretical framework of a sense of community and empowerment theory to data and conversations obtained from stakeholders in the Pingry School community, including students, faculty, and staff, in hopes of gaining insight on how the DEIB department supports and implements current initiatives that promote a sense of belonging through social connectedness within the community

Disciplinary Discrepancies: Exploring Experiences for 5th Graders on IEPs
Get PDFThis study examines the disciplinary experiences of 5th-grade students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), focusing on the differing impacts of general education versus special education teachers in an urban middle school. While the study is situated within a larger population of students in grades 5 through 8, the sample focuses on 194 5th-grade students from a predominantly Hispanic community. Using a quantitative research design, this study analyzes pre-existing student and disciplinary records to examine patterns in the distribution of merits and demerits (reminders) among students with IEPs compared to their non-IEP peers. The analysis also considers how the source of the disciplinary actions, general or special education teachers, may influence these patterns. The anticipated findings aim to offer insights into how disciplinary practices may disproportionately affect students with disabilities, ultimately informing strategies for establishing a more inclusive and supportive educational environment.https://scholarworks.merrimack.edu/rcac_2025_posters/1015/thumbnail.jp
Beyond Academics: Implementing Social Emotional Learning in Higher Education
Get PDFStudents\u27 social and emotional well-being is important to their overall success in higher education. The transition from high school to higher education can create stress and anxiety for students (Stocker, 2018), fostering an environment where the whole student is supported, which eases that transition. Students who received Social and Emotional Learning skills in a K-12 setting dissipate over time. Therefore, it is important for students to consistently receive these supports (Mahoney, 2018). To address this challenge, I will instruct staff in guiding students through social emotional learning skills through a workshop series. A Strategy for Stronger Alumni Connections
Get PDFAlumni involvement is defined as alumni giving and/or alumni participating with their alma mater “within the last three years” (Gaier, 2005, p. 279). However, young alumni are the least likely to give back to their institution philanthropically, which is a key form of engagement. Gaier (2005, p. 280) also noted, “If universities desire to increase alumni involvement, then it is vital for universities to understand why alumni are involved with their alma mater.” To address the challenge of keeping alumni involved, I will develop a targeted engagement strategy to encourage increased young alumni involvement, as well as to cultivate long-term, meaningful relationships between alumni and their institution. By focusing on the unique needs and motivations of young alumni, this project seeks to bridge the gap from graduation to reunion with sustained engagement through events, philanthropic gifts, and volunteerism that is mutually beneficial to alumni and their institution.https://scholarworks.merrimack.edu/rcac_2025_posters/1031/thumbnail.jp
Personality and Suicidality: A Systematic Review of Five-Factor Model Traits as Predictors of Suicide Risk
Get PDFSuicidality is a major public health concern in the United States and abroad, and personality traits have been implicated in its risk factors. There are a few different theories related to personality traits. Prominent theories include the Five Factor Model of Personality, Eysenck’s Three-Factor Model, and Cattell’s 16 Personality Factors. This systematic literature review examines the relationship between the Five-Factor Model of personality traits and suicidality among adult men and women aged 21 to 50. The final identified 20 empirical studies for the review indicated that neuroticism and conscientiousness are the most consistent predictors of suicidality among adult men and women. Findings on the other three personality traits vary more but low extraversion, agreeableness, and openness may play a role in suicidal ideation. The findings highlighted the importance of personality tests in suicide prevention and suggest that interventions targeting personality traits may be effective.https://scholarworks.merrimack.edu/rcac_2025_posters/1035/thumbnail.jp
Breaking Barriers: The Potential of Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Veterans
Get PDFPost-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) remains a substantial issue among Veterans. Many Veterans who receive conventional treatments for PTSD do not experience full recovery. An alternative treatment for PTSD is psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT), which involves the use of psychedelic drugs in a controlled, therapeutic setting to help treat mental health conditions. This systematic literature review assesses the efficacy of PAT for treating PTSD in the Veteran population. Using specific keywords in multiple databases, a literature search was conducted which identified 20 empirical studies meeting the inclusion criteria for review in this paper. This review highlights a portion of the most recent literature on this topic, focusing on the potential benefits, and potential risks of PAT. Breaking the Cycle: Resilience in Children of Recovering Parents
Get PDFAddiction and recovery affect not only the individual but also the entire family, often causing stress and emotional challenges for children. Despite these difficulties, some children develop survival skills that help them build resilience. Parental recovery can influence family dynamics, emotional stability, and children’s ability to cope and thrive. This systematic literature review explores the experiences that shape resilience in children aged three to nine. A comprehensive literature search using keywords and subject headings was conducted, yielding 20 empirical studies that met the identified inclusion criteria for this study. The review highlights key survival skills such as emotional regulation, self-esteem, problem-solving, adaptability, and empathy. It emphasizes the connection between a parent\u27s recovery and a child\u27s ability to thrive, stressing the importance of stable caregiving, supportive environments, and targeted therapeutic interventions. Broken Bonds: The Lasting Effects of Divorce and Family Separation on Attachment and Relationships
Get PDFDisruptions in family dynamics due to separations can affect the children’s attachment styles, in turn impacting the ability to form and maintain stable relationships in adulthood. This systematic literature review explores what existing findings are regarding the impact of attachment styles and relationship functioning of children due to family structure disruptions, such as divorce or separation of parental figures. Drawing from attachment theory, the final identified 20 empirical articles in this review examine how parental conflicts, emotional security and consistency from the caregivers could have an influence on the development of secure, anxious, or avoidant patterns. Attachment related challenges can lead to difficulties in relationship forming, maintaining, and communication as the child goes through adulthood. Some of the findings also suggest how family systems theory can better explain how disruption of family dynamics and communication further contribute to the development of specific attachment styles. Other identified studies for the review indicate that children from divorced families have a higher chance of developing insecure attachment styles such as anxious or avoidant. Findings additionally suggest how children with insecure or avoidant attachment styles can display difficulties in emotional regulation, trust, and commitment later in life. Furthermore , findings in this review identify how protective factors, such as therapeutic interventions and strong parental support, can help children mitigate negative effects and become more able to develop healthy relationship connections and positive attachment patterns.https://scholarworks.merrimack.edu/rcac_2025_posters/1049/thumbnail.jp
