Interpreting Igneous Textures and Compositions of the Marblehead Neck Area for Comparison in Local Formation Event Sequencing

This geologic study focuses on Marblehead Neck, a small Island connected by a bridge off Marblehead, MA, characterized by diverse igneous formations. The island, part of the Avalon terrane, has a makeup of igneous units. The prevailing map indicates exposures of Proterozoic Dedham Granite and Lynn Volcanics, yet the region's complexity challenges existing interpretations. These formations, crucial for deciphering the Dedham-Milford Zone's history in the area, prompt comparisons with Dedham Granite, Milford Granite, Lynn-Mattapan Volcanic Complex, and Middlesex Fells Volcanic Complex. Using Petrographic methods and comparing local lithologies, we can come to unravel the lithologies origins. Petrographic analyses of the lithologies reveal that granodiorite consists of plagioclase (60%), quartz (25%), K- feldspars (5%), hornblende (5%), biotite (5%) and includes metasedimentary xenoliths. The granite intrudes into the granodiorite and consists of K-feldspar (40%), quartz (35%), plagioclase (20%), minor hornblende (5%), and is devoid of metasedimentary xenoliths. The rhyolitic flows are mostly fine-grained groundmass, with some plagioclase phenocrysts and mafic inclusions. The subvolcanic unit is identified as dacite porphyry. These units showed field relations spanning different time periods. Overall, our results indicate the granodiorite unit is part of the Dedham Granite, Granite with the Spot Pond Granite, Rhyolite with the Lynn-Mattapan Volcanic Complex, and Dacite with later subvolcanic activity, possibly related to Lynn feeder dikes or later Pangea volcanism. This approach, incorporating fieldwork, remote reconnaissance, petrographic analysis, and petrographic comparison to known data, aims to refine the understanding of Marblehead Neck's geological evolution within the broader context of the Dedham-Milford Zone.Geological Science

    Adiel Lopez

Lopez, an eternally optimistic person, was born in El Salvador in 1985. His grandparents raised him between the ages of five and thirteen, as his parents had migrated to the United States to build a better future for their family. His grandparents' farm, where he and his siblings worked, had neither running water nor electricity. Although Adiel used to "love to play dress up" as a child, he did not talk about his sexuality or gender until much later. He speaks proudly about his mother's acceptance when he finally decided to come out to her. His teen years were spent in Chelsea, MA, and then he moved to Lynn after discovering Fran's place in 2013. Adiel identifies Fran's Place with "family, friendship, and community." He currently lives in Lynn with his husband Robert and two-year-old son Gabriel. Interview carried out by Andrew Darien

    Peter Abate

Born in 1957 and raised in Lynn, Peter is a Lynn Classical High School graduate, an artist, a former member of Lynnside Out, and a retired social services program director living in New Hampshire. His parents met in Blackpool, England, where his mother was raised, and his father was stationed as an Air Force member during World War II. After the war, she would return with him to Everett, Massachusetts, and eventually relocate to Lynn, where they would raise their four children. As the youngest child, Peter was his mother’s favorite and described a largely happy, working-class upbringing. Although he had crushes on other boys in grammar and high school, he did not understand it then and even had a girlfriend before going to Franconia College in New Hampshire. He chose the school, in part because of their progressive policy of not discriminating based on sexual orientation. By his early twenties, at the height of the disco era, Peter had started attending Fran’s Place and, later, Mr. Dominic’s. He met his husband David in 1983, and they built a life in Lynn’s Diamond District, which by the 1990s became a mecca for gays and lesbians. While working at Greater Lynn Mental Health, Peter became an HIV and AIDS prevention trainer. Peter was part of a group that published Lynnside Out, a publication and social network for community members. In 2000, Peter and David moved to Maine and eventually New Hampshire. He discusses life in these more conservative enclaves and his perspective on the future of the LGBTQ+ movement

    Tony Lecondino

Tony grew up in Revere in an Italian-American family composed of his father, a mechanic, his mother, a homemaker, and a younger sister, whom he adored. He attended Catholic school as a child but, as an independent thinker, questioned many of its teachings. He attended Revere High School but was bored with the curriculum so he joined a technical high school program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. When Lecondino’s parents divorced, he skipped his senior year and joined the US Navy at the height of the Vietnam War. Although he was near combat in Cambodia, he never directly experienced it. The Navy opened up new worlds of travel and sexual experimentation. Still, he lived a “double life” as a closeted man on the ship and a gay one on land. He was honorably discharged due to an injury and would later throw himself into the nightlife of Boston and the North Shore. He got into the music scene, was a DJ, and served as an undercover detective for Jay Collins at Fran’s Place. He would eventually become Fran’s bartender and DJ. Tony helped usher the bar through a new era of openness, dance, music, and integration and even converted a group of hostile Hell’s Angels to allies. He concludes the interview with a story about saving Fran's Place during the 1981 fire that burned down much of the neighborhood

My Lahey Chart Patient Satisfaction, Queue Durations, and Workflow Outcomes

    No full text
This research was done to show how much impact an inconvenient action can have on the workflow and patient satisfaction rates. The results of this research concluded that when a patient does not do their pre-screening question before their appointment, it does have an impact on other patients and their own wait times. It was also proven that by a patient not filling out their pre-screening questions beforehand, their entire visit is prolonged. These rates also have a huge impact on workflow balance and how smoothly the day runs

Benefits of Strengh Training for Stroke Survivors

    No full text
Traumatic brain injuries can change ones life forever both physically and cognitively. The purpose of this project was to observe progress towards short and long term goals for two stroke survivors and implement five new exercises into their program to help them achieve those goals. Each participant had a goal of strengthening their affected side as well as improving posture and balance. After researching beneficial exercises for each participant, five new exercises were added to their program. They worked on these new exercises for six weeks. Each participant was then assessed on how the new exercises feel, if they feel as though they have progressed, and if they believe these exercises will help them achieve their goals. Adding these exercises to their workout program has not only benefited them strength wise, but their confidence has improved greatly

A Study Of School Personnel’s Preparation And Training To Recognize And Report Child Maltreatment

The topic of my honors thesis is child maltreatment in school settings, specifically the training and preparation that school personnel have received to respond and report this maltreatment. Using survey methods, this project surveyed teachers and other school staff (N= 87) at public schools in Massachusetts. Findings indicate that most participants have only received Mandated Reporter training, but many said they wished they would have received more training before a student disclosed to them. In conclusion, these findings demonstrate that teachers and other school staff want and need supplemental training for recognizing and reporting child maltreatment.Social Wor

Taking Up Space: A Guide to the Artistry in Stage Managment

Like most college seniors, thinking about how to encapsulate four years of college into one project, document, etc. is a scary thing to think about. Throughout my time in undergrad, I noticed a lot of stage-management related texts were geared towards post-grad individuals and were written by professionals. While these resources are incredibly valuable and necessary, I wanted to make this guide for university-level stage managers from the perspective of a student. Think of this text as a diary. A journal entry. Advice from your big sister. And, for any educator who may be reading this, think of this as a tool to help understand your students a little bit better. It is only through sharing our perspectives that we can learn and grow as theatre makers. Take all I say with a grain of salt- this is not the absolute truth. What makes you powerful is your unique style. May this text empower you to draw closer to your authentic self.Theatre and Speech Communicatio

Teaching Higher Level Vector Concepts To Elementary Age Students By Exploring The Use Of Gamification

Mathematics has been known by many students to be their least favorite subject due to the complexity of the concepts, and the way in which this subject has historically been taught. However, with how practical mathematical skills are in so many diverse fields, helping foster a student's positive relationship with math is extremely beneficial for their academic and career growth. This literature review explores how educators can make math education more engaging starting from the elementary school level while also providing students with a good math foundation that will support them in higher grades and beyond their schooling. This goal can be accomplished by introducing elementary age students to the higher-level math concept of vectors. With the application of vectors in careers ranging from STEM fields to animation, students will see how practical and useful math can be in the outside world. Combining this concept with researched-based math engagement strategies, such as gamification and hands-on activities, will help support students' intrinsic motivation with math. This literature review concludes with lesson plan resources that educators can use to effectively teach students this practical, higher level math concept in an engaging way.EducationMathematic
